Seder Plate- Shraga Simmons

by Meor Emory

MARROR & CHAZERET- These are the bitter herbs which symbolize the lot of the Hebrew slaves whose lives were embittered by the hard labor. Many people use horseradish for Marror and Romaine lettuce for Chazeret. Charoset reminds us of the hard Jewish labor performed with bricks and mortar. Charoset is a pasty mixture of nuts, dates, apples, wine and cinnamon. The Talmud says this serves as an "antiseptic" to dilute the harsh effects of the Marror. ZERO'AH- During the times of...

Ha lachma- inviting guests to the Seder

by Meor Emory

Helping the Poor: A Story Once just before Pesach someone arrived at the house of Rabbi Josef-Baer from Brisk, to ask a legal question: The Questioner: Teach me, Rabbi; can one say Kiddush on Pesach over four cups of milk? The Rabbi: Pray tell, are you perhaps ill? The Questioner: No! Thank God, I’m physically well, but (he added in a low voice) wine is a little expensive for me this year. The Rabbi to his wife, the Rebbetzin: Give that...

4 Cups

by Meor Emory

Why do we drink the 4 cups of wine? a) The Jews were not allowed to drink alcohol in Egypt – so we make up for it now b) They correspond to the 4 expressions of redemption of the Jewish People from Egypt found in the Torah c) When your head starts spinning, you gain a sense of how the Egyptians felt during the plagues d) They correspond to the 4 cups of wine that Pharaoh drank daily in Egypt e)...

Introduction

Welcome to Our Seder

by Valley Beth Shalom (VBS)

In every generation, we must see ourselves as if we personally were liberated from Egypt. We gather tonight to tell the ancient story of a people's liberation from Egyptian slavery. This is the story of our origins as a people. It is from these events that we gain our ethics, our vision of history, our dreams for the future. We gather tonight, as two hundred generations of Jewish families have before us, to retell the timeless tale. Yet our tradition requires...

All Green With Life

by heidi aycock

When we bless the green parsley and dip it in the salty water, we remember the spring, and we remember the long, sad years of our slavery. When we left Egypt,we bloomed and sprouted, and songs dripped from our tongueslike shimmering threads of nectar. All green with life we grew, who had been buried, under toil and sorrow, dense as bricks. All green in the desert we grew, casting seeds at a promise. All green we grew.

Maggid: The Story of the Turtles

by Sara Shapiro Plevan

Remember the days of old:consider the years of many generations (Deut. 32:7) Every year, hundreds of giant sea turtles swim hundreds of miles from their homes near Brazil to a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean in order to find their mates.  For years, scientists tried to understand how the turtles could find their way every time, from so far away. It was a tiny island, and even airplanes sometimes had trouble finding it.  What do you think it was??  Once...

Hearing Suffering

by Rebecca Sauer

Kafka once wrote in his journal: "You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world. That is something you are free to do and it accords with your nature. But perhaps this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid." The "you" that Kafka is addressing might be himself, or it might be each of us. But it also could be -- and here's the stunner -- the God of Exodus Himself. It accords with His nature,...

The First Cup

by Talya Finke

“If to be free is the most important goal of all, then to help someone else to be or become free must be the most sublime and rewarding of human endeavours” Eli Wiesel This year I want us as Habonim Dror to allow for the wine to represent four different freedoms we are working towards in the world 1. Freedom from government-led oppression 2. Freedom from pressure to conform to societal norms 3. Freedom from patriarchal society 4. Freedom from indifference...

SALT WATER SUFFERING

by Brock Pollock

Salt Water Salt is unique in that it is bitter on its own, yet sweetens and brings out the taste of that which it is added to. For this reason, salt is the staple of suffering. There are two perspectives of suffering – Purposeless Suffering and Purposeful Suffering. Purposeless Suffering is suffering without reason, value, or an end-goal, and is therefore completely bitter. It is based on a keyhole view of life: “What is right in front of my eyes is...
