Four Questions

by Michelle Dannemiller

The Four Questions The formal telling of the story of Passover is framed as a discussion with lots of questions and answers. The tradition that the youngest person asks the questions reflects the centrality of involving everyone in the seder. Asking questions is a core tradition in Jewish life. Since we don’t have any young children this year, we’ll do them together. מַה נִּשְׁתַּנָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מִכָּל הַלֵּילות Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol haleilot? Why is this night different from all...

Yahatz

by Michelle Dannemiller

Breaking the middle matzah | Yachatz | יַחַץ There are three pieces of matzah stacked here. Earlier, we broke the middle matzah into two pieces and hid the larger piece. That piece is called the afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek. After dinner, y’all will have to hunt for the afikomen in order to wrap up the meal… and win a prize. We eat matzah in memory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. As slaves, they had faced many...

Kiddish

by Michelle Dannemiller

Kiddush (the blessing over wine) | kadeish | קַדֵּשׁ All Jewish celebrations, from holidays to weddings, include wine as a symbol of our joy – not to mention a practical way to increase that joy. The seder starts with wine and then gives us three more opportunities to refill our cups and drink. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן: Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree hagafen. We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruit...

Candlelighting

by Michelle Dannemiller

The first words in the creation of the universe out of the unformed, void and dark earth were God’s “Let there be light." Therein lies the hope and faith of Judaism and the obligation of our people: to make the light of justice, compassion, and knowledge penetrate the darkness of our time. ברוך אתה יי אלהינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו להדליק נר של (שבתו) יום טוב Baruch atah Adonai Elohaynoo melech ha-olam, asher keedshanoo b’meetzvotav v’tzeevanoo l’hadleek ner shel...

Welcome

by Michelle Dannemiller

Welcome to our family seder. It is such a joy to share this holiday with our friends and family. We'll use this Haggadah, the book that tells the Passover story, to guide us through our Seder. Seder means "order," because the service moves in a specific order with specific steps. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to interupt at any time, and if we don't know the answer, we'll at least have some good discussion.

Elijah’s Cup and Miriam’s Cup

by Eileen Levinson

The fourth cup of wine is poured We now draw our attention to the two empty cups on the table--one of which is for Elijah the Prophet, and the other for Miriam the Prophetess. Tradition teaches us that each of these biblical characters plays an important task of bringing redemption. It is said that that Elijah the Prophet visits the homes of Jewish families on Passover, to check to see if we are all truly ready to welcome the stranger, and are...

Long ago, at this season, a people - our people - set our on a journey. On such a night as this, israel went forth from degradation to joy. We give thanks for the liberations of days gone by. Maggid – The story of Exodus – מַגִיד

by caroline

During the time when Pharaoh issued his decree to kill Israelite males, Moses, who later was to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to freedom, was an infant. His concerned mother, Jochebed placed him in a basket of reeds in the Nile River while Moses’ sister Miriam watched from a distance to see who would come to find him. The basket was found by the Pharaoh’s daughter, who decided to raise the infant as her own son and named...

Seder Introduction

by Valley Beth Shalom (VBS)

For generations, Jewish families have shared the ancient story of the Exodus at the Seder table. They found in this story a unique vision of human history and experience. They found a unique set of ethics. They found the strength to hope, despite the darkest of circumstances. This remarkable story forms the core of our identity as a people, and our philosophy of life. For the story of enslavement and liberation is not a one-time event, but an eternal process. We...

The Cup of Sanctification

by Valley Beth Shalom (VBS)

The Hebrew word “Kiddush” means sanctification. But it is not the wine we sanctify. Instead, the wine is a symbol of the sanctity, the preciousness, and the sweetness of this moment. Held together by sacred bonds of family, friendship, peoplehood, we share this table tonight with one another and with all the generations who have come before us. We belong. We belong to one another. And we belong to the generations who have come before and who will come after us,...

The Answers

by Sara Smith

There are many questions. Now we begin to answer. Our history moves from slavery toward freedom. Our narration begins with degradation and rises to dignity. Our service opens with the rule of evil and advances to the kingdom of God. 1. We were slaves to Pharoah in Egypt and the Lord freed us from Egypt with a mighty hand. Had not the Holy One liberated our people from Egypt, then we, our children and our children's children would still be enslaved....

Dayenu- it would have been enough

by Barry Louis Polisar

A Medieval addition to the Haggadah, this hymn originally contained fifteen verses mirroring the fifteen steps in the Seder.   How many are the gifts God bestowed upon us! Had God: Brought us out of Egypt and not divided the sea for us Divided the sea and not permitted us to cross on dry land, Permitted us to cross on dry land and not sustained us for forty years in the desert, Sustained us for forty years in the desert and not...

The Cup of Deliverance- Second Cup of Wine

by Barry Louis Polisar

We raise our cups as we recall the second promise of liberation to the people of Israel. Let us glorify God who performed these miracles for our ancestors and for us. Let us rejoice at the wonder of our deliverance from bondage to freedom, from servitude to redemption. Hallelujah. We praise God who has delivered us and our ancestors from Egypt and brought us here this night to eat matzoh and maror. Our God and God of our ancestors, help us...

Drinking from Miriam's Well

by Mark Hurvitz

Empty whatever wine remains in the wine glasses into the empty bowls (see page ) then pour some water from the pitcher that has stood on the table into everyone’s wine glass. We have escaped bondage and crossed the sea. We enter the arid land before us, made hesitant by generations of servitude—mixed with our recent struggle, and yet heady in our new freedom. We have thirsted for freedom, but now we thirst for water. As with so many people in...
