Alternative by Marcia Falk

by Margaret Hobart

The following alternative kiddush was written by Marcia Falk, a prominent Jewish feminist liturgist. Her blessings avoid the problem of God’s gender because they do not reference God as a person-like being. In addition, they locate the power of blessing with the people ("Let us bless" rather than with God’s inherent blessedness ("Blessed are you") N’vareykh et Eyn Hahayim matzmihat p’ri hagefen. Let us bless the Source of Life that ripens the fruit on the vine.

Alizia Garza of #Black Lives Matter reflects on liberation and Prince

by Margaret Hobart

Prince Rogers Nelson. He belonged to all of us and yet he belonged to no one. He was a part of a mythical universe of which we had only seen small glimpses–because he was gracious enough to show them to us. He was from a world where you could be anything and anyone you wanted to be–as long as it was true to you. He was from a world where pleasure and desire and gratitude and unity were the pre-requisites for...
