Ha Lachma Anya - This is the Bread of Affliction -- Israel

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

While I love the idea of all Jews being together in Israel, I love my home in the United States. I personally can never imagine living in Israel due to the violence there, however I like to think about a utopian era in which all Jews will be together. Eliana M. V'hi Sh'Amda -- Suffering

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

One thing I like about learning what the Jewish people have been through is that I’m really interested in learning about the people that were in these events and how it has helped us to be who we are today. But, what I really think it does to us is that it makes us know what suffering can really do to a person, or a group of people. It can make us understand how to react to different situations without hurting...

V'hi Sh'Amda -- Suffering

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

In my opinion focusing on jewish suffering make us more sensitive to the suffering of others because of the way we always wanted to be treated. We know what is to suffer and i think we dony want anyone to suffer. Ezequiel N, Panama #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

V'hi Sh'Amda -- Antisemitism

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

My jewish experience in Panama has been very good. Anti-semitism is everywere around de world, but I only saw others experiencing antisemitism by the news. It didn't affect my jewish experience at all. However, I feel sorry for the people who jewish experience is affected drastically by antisemitism. Four Children - Labels

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Labels are hurtful when it is used in a derogatory way. Labels usually define people, but they can become harmful when the label confines a person to not be themselves. Leanna C, Los Angeles, #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Four Parents

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Similar to the four types of children, there are four types of parents.  1. The Strict Parent-who is controlling and over protective of the child  2. The Careless Parent-who focuses more on their own needs instead of being there for the child  3. The Compassionate Parent-who loves the child unconditionally and supports everything they do 4. The Teaching Parent-who is not afraid to punish the child and teach them a greater lesson Niki K., Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Labels

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Labels are hurtful and restrictive because not everyone wants to live within a confined definition of who they, or others may think that they are. If there were no labels, people would not be afraid to truly act as they please to, because they would not live in fear of prejudice and/or derogatory labeling. Four Children - Wicked Child

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Someone is wicked if they are closed to new/ different ideas and refuse to hear what someone else has to say. It is this kind of closed-mindedness that limits a person and closes them off from the world and all that there is to learn. Yonina, Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Wicked Child

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Someone who is wicked is intentionally attempting to or is hurting another person, they enjoy harming others. However, this label of the "wicked child" does not apply in this situation. Natalie R #globalteenagershaggadah #globalbeitmidrash

Four Children

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

I believe that the four children are aspects of each human being. We all have a bit of the wise, wicked, simple and shy. These characteristics become present in our lives when we deal with difference situations and experience the world around us. Kayla M., Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

These four children are reflected in the world today because they are reflected in each of us. Someone could argue that the wicked child is the yetzer ha'rah, but I don't think that it is part of that binary. I think that every person has some rebelliousness in them, as well as all the other four children. Sophie L, Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Labels

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Labels are hurtful when they are too general and take away a person's individuality. Labels are helpful when they are introducing you to a person to help you get to know them better. Saphira, Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Wicked Child

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

I feel like I am the rebellious (wicked) child because I can be very annoyed with rituals that seem to have no point so therefore I end up questioning. Isaac W, Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Wicked Child

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

The wicked person reminds me of the quote from Hillel in Pirkei Avot which says that you should not separate yourself from the community. The haggadah seems to know that the person is wicked before they have done anything wrong just because they distance themselves from their community. This shows us how important the value of community is and also suggests that someone without the support of a community is more likely to wind up doing evil things Daniel S, Los...

Four Children - Wicked Child

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

I believe that for someone to be wicked they must have wicked intentions and rebellious aspirations in life. I don't believe that someone could be raised to be wicked/rebellious, but they are in fact born wicked/rebellious. However, their influences later in life greatly affect their chances of being wicked/rebellious. Some factors could be role models, the media, and their general environment. Four Children - Labels

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

I think the four children accurately represent one person. This is because all humans experience the traits of being wise, wicked, simple, and shy at one point in life. This four labels can be seen as four diffent aspects of human characteristics and life. Jacob K, Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Labels

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Labels are helpful in the case of raising the self-esteem, and motivating others to succeed. Labels used with positive words, encourage positive outcomes. When labels are hurtful, they name the person for one thing, and make that one thing define them. Whether it be good or bad, most people do not want to be stuck with one label their whole life. Four Children - Wicked Child

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

I think that what makes someone rebellious is the fact that they never want to include themselves into the social norm. They are constantly looking to contradict an idea or custom, and are trying to redefine what is already known. Despite this, being rebellious is not always a bad thing, but can sometimes lead to dangerous results. Jonathon A, Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah

Four Children - Four Parents

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

These are what I think the four different types of parents are: The Teacher- Teaches their child how to live. The Provider- Gives their child everything they need to live. The Protector- Always there to protect their child from anything and everything in their life. The Careless- Doesn't care about child. Makes them live on their own. Four Children

by Milken School Global Beit Midrash

Labels can be helpful because they create organization and a system. However, labels are typically hurtful because they also have the ability to create a dehumanizing hierarchy, classifying certain groups as “higher” or more superior than others. When people are labeled, it creates a separation between what is accepted by society and what is considered “different” or “abnormal.” Melissa S., Los Angeles #globalbeitmidrash #globalteenagershaggadah
