One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.</p>\n\n<p>What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand: The restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening was the Creator's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.</p>\n\n<p><u>Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If our Creator allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. Why?</p>\n\n<p>Answer:</p>\n\n<p>We do so because we always need to be in giving mode.</p>\n\n<p>A Story Once just before Pesach someone arrived at the house of Rabbi Josef-Baer from Brisk, to ask a legal question:</p>\n\n<p>The Questioner: Teach me, Rabbi; can one say Kiddush on Pesach over four cups of milk?</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi: Pray tell, are you perhaps ill?</p>\n\n<p>The Questioner: No! Thank God, I’m physically well, but (he added in a low voice) wine is a little expensive for me this year.</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi to his wife, the Rebbetzin: Give that man 25 rubles for four cups of wine.</p>\n\n<p>The Questioner: But, Rabbi, I came to ask a question not to request a handout, God forbid.</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi: This is only a loan until God blesses you with greater prosperity.</p>\n\n<p>The Narrator: After the man had taken the money and gone, the rebbetzin raised a question.</p>\n\n<p>The Rebbetzin: Why did you have to give him 25 rubles? Four cups of wine cannot cost more than two or three rubles.</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi: You heard his question. He intended to drink four cups of milk at the seder. Surely if he had the funds to eat meat at a complete seder then he could not have drunk milk with his meat meal. This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians, and do not condone or knowingly tolerate such public lying, cursing, and blaspheming of his Son and of his Christians. For whatever we tolerated in the past unknowingly and I myself was unaware of it will be pardoned by God. But if we, now that we are informed, were to protect and shield such a house for the Jews, existing right before our very nose, in which they lie about, blaspheme, curse, vilify, and defame Christ and us (as was heard above), it would be the same as if we were doing all this and even worse ourselves, as we very well know.</p>\n\n<p><strong><u>Did Anne Frank really exist?</u></strong></p>\n\n<p>In 1958, at a performance of <em>The Diary of Anne Frank</em> in Vienna, <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Wiesenthal\">Simon Wiesenthal</a> was challenged by a group of protesters who asserted that Anne Frank had never existed, and who challenged Wiesenthal to prove her existence by finding the man who had arrested her. Wiesenthal indeed began searching for <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Silberbauer\">Karl Silberbauer</a> and found him in 1963. When interviewed, Silberbauer admitted his role, and identified Anne Frank from a photograph as one of the people arrested. Silberbauer provided a full account of events, even recalling emptying a briefcase full of papers onto the floor. His statement corroborated the version of events that had previously been presented by witnesses such as Otto Frank.</p>\n\n<p>Opponents of the diary continued to express the view that it was not written by a teen, but was a hoax, with Otto Frank being accused of fraud.</p>\n\n<p><u><strong>American anti semitism 2016/2017</strong></u></p>\n\n<p>Jews across the United States are increasingly alarmed at the rise in anti-Semitic incidents across the country.</p>\n\n<p>In December, the New York City Police Department noted a 115% increase in bias crimes in the previous month, with Jews the target of 24 out of 43 incidents in that period. On February 27, 2017, for the fifth time in recent weeks, bomb threats roiled over 100 JCCs and Jewish schools across the country, forcing students, staff, elderly members and young babies to evacuate.</p>\n\n<p>A bullet was fired through the window of a Hebrew school classroom in Indiana. Jewish cemeteries have been vandalized in St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Swastikas have been carved into schools, libraries, and even inside the Illinois Holocaust Museum.</p>\n\n<p>Here's what a typical<a href=\"http://www.jta.org/2017/01/31/news-opinion/united-states/this-is-what-a-jcc-bomb-threat-sounds-like\"> </a>bomb threat sounds like:</p>\n\n<p>“It’s a C-4 bomb with a lot of shrapnel, surrounded by a bag… In a short time, a large number of Jews are going to be slaughtered. Their heads are going to (be) blown off from the shrapnel. There’s a lot of shrapnel. Passover is the Spring festival where we celebrate the birth of our nation ― and these vegetables are a symbol of rebirth and rejuvenation.</p>\n\n<p>MARROR &amp; CHAZERET</p>\n\n<p>These are the bitter herbs which symbolize the lot of the Hebrew slaves whose lives were embittered by the hard labor. Many people use horseradish for Marror and Romaine lettuce for Chazeret.</p>\n\n<p>CHAROSET</p>\n\n<p>Charoset reminds us of the hard Jewish labor performed with bricks and mortar. Charoset is a pasty mixture of nuts, dates, apples, wine and cinnamon. The Talmud says this serves as an \"antiseptic\" to dilute the harsh effects of the Marror.</p>\n\n<p>ZERO'AH</p>\n\n<p>During the times of the Temple in Jerusalem, the Korbon Pesach (Pascal Lamb) was brought to the Temple on the eve of Passover. It was roasted, and was the last thing eaten at the Seder meal. To commemorate this offering, we place a roasted chicken bone with a little meat remaining.</p>\n\n<p>In Temple times, every Jew was \"registered\" to eat the Korbon Pesach with his particular group. The Talmud says that the bigger the group, the better. This is a source for having large Seder gatherings!</p>\n\n<p>BEITZAH</p>\n\n<p>A second offering, called the <em>Chagigah</em>, was brought to the Temple and eaten as the main course of the Seder meal. A vegetables starts off in the dirt and eventually sprouts out of the ground. The Jews as a nation started off in slavery but from there became a strong and independent Nation. Sometimes we need tough starts in order to reach our Potential.</p>\n\n<p><strong>What can we further learn?</strong></p>\n\n<p>When we analyze the word Karpas and break it down to its four component parts ― its four letters of <em>kaf, reish, pehand samech,</em> ― we discover an encoded message of four words which teaches a basic lesson about how to develop our capacity for giving.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Ka-</strong>Kaf- Palm of hand</p>\n\n<p><strong>R-</strong>Reish- One who is impoverished</p>\n\n<p><strong>Pa-</strong>Peh- Mouth</p>\n\n<p><strong>S-</strong>Samech-To support</p>\n\n<p>The first letter of Karpas means the palm of the hand. The second letter means a poor person. When taken together these two letter/words speak of a benevolent hand opened for the needy.</p>\n\n<p>But what if you are a person of limited means, with precious little to give? Look at the second half of the word Karpas. The letter <em>peh</em> means mouth, while the final letter <em>samech</em> means to support. True, you may not be capable of giving in the material sense, but you can always give with your words. Words of kindness and concern. Words of empathy and understanding. Words that can lift an impoverished soul and provide a means of support where nothing else will do.</p>\n\n<p>We dip the <em>Karpas</em> in saltwater. Saltwater recalls the bitter tears shed in Egypt. But there is more. The Jewish people, though awash in the tears of bondage, were able to preserve their ability to give. When I ask people would they rather be a Nazi killing an innocent Jew or the innocent Jew taken to his death? They choose the Jew. Why? Who is really the victim?</strong></p>\n\n<p>Simon Wiesenthal in his book the Murderers among us, he notes that he watched both Nazis being arrested and Jews marching to their death. He notes the one difference that Jews didn’t do that Nazis did.</p>\n\n<p> <em>\"Wiesenthal had seen many people go to their deaths Most were afraid; some were so terrified that they had to be supported by others. Some prayed; some cried. But they had never begged for their lives\".</em> </p>\n\n<p><u>Rabbi Yosef Wallis, director of Arachim of Israel, talks to Project Witness about his father, Judah Wallis, who was born and raised in Pavenitz, Poland.</u></p>\n\n<p>While he was in Dachau, a Jew who was being taken to his death suddenly flung a small bag at my father, Judah Wallis. He caught it, thinking it might contain a piece of bread. Upon opening it, however, he was disturbed to discover a pair of <em>tefillin</em> . Judah was very frightened because he knew that were he to be caught carrying <em>tefillin</em> , he would be put to death instantly. So he hid the <em>tefillin</em> under his shirt and headed for his bunkhouse.</p>\n\n<p>In the morning, just before the <em>appel</em> [roll call], while still in his bunkhouse, he put on the <em>tefillin</em> . Unexpectedly, a German officer appeared. He ordered him to remove the <em>tefillin</em> , noted the number on Judah’s arm.</p>\n\n<p>At the <em>appel</em> , in front of thousands of silent Jews, the officer called out Judah’s number and he had no choice but to step forward. The German officer waved the tefillin in the air and said, \"Dog! I sentence you to death by public hanging for wearing these.\"</p>\n\n<p>Judah was placed on a stool and a noose was placed around his neck. Before he was hanged, the officer said in a mocking tone, \"Dog, what is your last wish?\"</p>\n\n<p>“To wear my <em>tefillin</em> one last time,\" Judah replied.</p>\n\n<p>“The officer was dumbfounded. He handed Judah the <em>tefillin</em> . As Judah put them on, he recited the verse that is said while the <em>tefillin</em> are being wound around the fingers: <em>\"Ve’eirastich li le’olam, ve’eirastich li b’tzedek uvemishpat, ub’chessed, uv’rachamim, ve’eirastich li b’emunah, v’yodaat es Hashem</em> – I will betroth you to me forever and I will betroth you to me with righteousness and with justice and with kindness and with mercy and I will betroth you to me with fidelity, and you shall know God.\"</p>\n\n<p>It is hard for us to picture this Jew with a noose around his neck, wearing <em>tefillin</em> on his head and arm – but that was the scene that the entire camp was forced to watch, as they awaited the impending hanging of the Jew who had dared to break the rule against wearing <em>tefillin</em> .</p>\n\n<p>Even women from the adjoining camp were lined up at the barbed wire fence that separated them from the men’s camp, forced to watch this horrible sight.</p>\n\n<p>As Judah turned to watch the silent crowd, he saw tears in many people’s eyes. Even at that moment, as he was about to be hanged, he was shocked. Jews were crying! How was it possible that they still had tears left to shed? And for a stranger? Where were those tears coming from? Impulsively, in Yiddish, he called out, \" <em>Yidden</em>, I am the victor. Thank God, I’m physically well, but (he added in a low voice) wine is a little expensive for me this year.</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi to his wife, the Rebbetzin: Give that man 25 rubles for four cups of wine.</p>\n\n<p>The Questioner: But, Rabbi, I came to ask a question not to request a handout, God forbid.</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi: This is only a loan until God blesses you with greater prosperity.</p>\n\n<p>The Narrator: After the man had taken the money and gone, the rebbetzin raised a question.</p>\n\n<p>The Rebbetzin: Why did you have to give him 25 rubles? Four cups of wine cannot cost more than two or three rubles.</p>\n\n<p>The Rabbi: You heard his question. He intended to drink four cups of milk at the seder. Surely if he had the funds to eat meat at a complete seder then he could not have drunk milk with his meat meal. Three spices like ginger, cinnamon sticks, and sweet spike nard. (In Northern Europe where many fruits were unavailable in the spring, Jews simply used walnuts, apples and pears).</p>\n\n<p>Recipe #2: Maimonides (TALMUDIST, PHILOSOPHER, EGYPT, 12TH C)</p>\n\n<p>Figs and dates are soaked and then cooked. Then they are mashed and mixed with vinegar, straw-like grasses (like celery), and the spice “nard.” 5</p>\n\n<p>Recipe #3: Rabbi Kapach (YEMENITE, ISRAEL, 20TH C) Charoset is called “Dukeh,” meaning smashed fruits and nuts: dates (300 grams), raisins (300 g), figs (100 g), sesame (200 g), pomegranate (1), almonds (100 g), walnuts (100 g), black pepper (20 g), cumin (20 g), cinnamon sticks (10 g), zangwill (ginger) (10 g).</p>\n\n<p><u><strong>Turkey with Matzah Stuffing<br />\nRecipe courtesy of Larisa Simonova from Tallinn, Estonia.</strong></u></p>\n\n<p>Ingredients:<br />\n1 large turkey<br />\nFor the stuffing: 10 pieces of matzah; 1 ½ cups of white wine; vegetable oil; 2 medium-sized onions, cubed; 2 tablespoons of soup mix; 1 stalk of celery, diced; 10 rosemary twigs; ¾ to 1 cup of walnuts, chopped;<br />\nFor the basting oil: ½ cup of olive oil; 1 ½ teaspoons of mustard; ½ teaspoon of black pepper; ½ teaspoon of paprika.</p>\n\n<p>Preparation:<br />\nClean turkey thoroughly. Soak matzah in a dish with the white wine, until soft.<br />\nFry the onion until the color is golden. Mix the onion together with matzah, then add the celery, rosemary, and walnuts.</p>\n\n<p>Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix olive oil, mustard, black pepper and paprika in separate dish and then smear on turkey using your hands. Stuff turkey with the matzah stuffing, placing any additional stuffing under the turkey. Cover with foil and roast for at least 3 hours, turning it from time to time, until it gets tender and golden.</p>\n\n<p>By Marissa Weitzman</p>\n\n<p><strong>Delicious Menu for the Seder</strong><br />\nby Elizabeth Kurtz <br />\n<strong>A festive meal worth waiting for!</strong></p>\n\n<p>MOROCCAN SALMON</p>\n\n<p>Makes 8 servings</p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>3 red bell peppers, seeded and coarsely chopped</li>\n\t<li>3 jalapeño peppers, seeded and chopped</li>\n\t<li>8 cloves garlic</li>\n\t<li>2 cups chopped fresh cilantro, divided</li>\n\t<li>¼ cup kalamata olives</li>\n\t<li>2 tomatoes chopped</li>\n\t<li>Kosher salt, to taste</li>\n\t<li>¼ cup olive oil</li>\n\t<li>½ cup fresh lemon juice</li>\n\t<li>8 (5-ounce) fillets boneless, skinless salmon</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Preheat oven to 400 degrees.</p>\n\n<p>Combine bell peppers, jalapeños, and garlic in a food processor; pulse until chunky. Add 1 cup of the cilantro and pulse to incorporate. Season with salt and set aside.</p>\n\n<p>Heat oil and lemon juice in a large skillet over medium. Add remaining 1 cup cilantro, olives, and tomatoes and cook 30 seconds. Add reserved pepper puree. Cook 2 minutes and remove from heat.</p>\n\n<p>Place salmon in a 9x13 oven-safe pan. Pour prepared sauce over salmon. Bake for 18 – 22 minutes. To serve, place salmon on platter and spoon sauce over and around the fish.</p>\n\n<p>OLIVE OIL AND GARLIC WHIPPED POTATOES</p>\n\n<p>Makes 8 servings</p>\n\n<p>Roasted Garlic:</p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>1 large head garlic</li>\n\t<li>1 tablespoon olive oil</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Potatoes:</p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>3 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces (Yukon Gold potatoes work well or red potatoes with skins on)</li>\n\t<li>1 cup olive oil, divided</li>\n\t<li>½ cup non-dairy creamer</li>\n\t<li>1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt</li>\n\t<li>¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly grated if possible)</li>\n\t<li>¼ teaspoon black pepper</li>\n\t<li>3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>To prepare the garlic: Preheat oven to 400°F. Slice the top off the head of the garlic, exposing the cloves. Place a large piece of aluminum foil under and around the garlic head. Drizzle olive oil over the garlic, allowing the oil to cover the garlic completely. Wrap tightly with the foil. Bake 45 minutes. Remove from oven to cool. When cool enough to handle, squeeze garlic out of skins and mash into a pulp. Set aside.</p>\n\n<p>To prepare the potatoes: Place potatoes in a large stockpot; add enough water to cover and salt well. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce to a simmer and cook until potatoes are very tender, about 30 minutes. Drain potatoes; transfer to a large bowl. Using a potato masher, mash potatoes until chunky. Do not over mix or they will become gummy and dense.</p>\n\n<p>Add reserved roasted garlic, ¾ cup of the olive oil, non-dairy creamer, salt, nutmeg, and pepper to mashed potatoes; mash or beat slowly with an electric mixer to desired consistency. Drizzle with olive oil; stir in chopped chives.</p>\n\n<p>Serve warm.</p>\n\n<p>STEWED MUSHROOMS</p>\n\n<p>Makes 8 servings</p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>½ cup (1 stick) margarine</li>\n\t<li>3 tablespoons potato starch</li>\n\t<li>3 pounds button mushrooms</li>\n\t<li>2 cups dry red wine</li>\n\t<li>2 cups vegetable broth</li>\n\t<li>½ cup chopped onion</li>\n\t<li>4 large cloves garlic, chopped</li>\n\t<li>2 teaspoons Passover soy sauce or white horseradish</li>\n\t<li>1 teaspoon kosher salt</li>\n\t<li>½ teaspoon black pepper</li>\n\t<li>Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Melt margarine over medium heat in a large Dutch oven. Add potato starch and stir to blend; cook 2 minutes, stirring. Add mushrooms, wine, broth, onion, garlic, and Passover soy sauce/horseradish. Cook until mushrooms are tender and sauce thickens, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. Stir in salt and pepper.</p>\n\n<p>Transfer mushrooms to a large serving bowl. Sprinkle with parsley and serve warm.</p>\n\n<p>ROASTED ASPARAGUS WITH LEMON</p>\n\n<p>Serves 8</p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>2 lbs. asparagus, washed and trimmed (white or green)</li>\n\t<li>2 tablespoons olive oil</li>\n\t<li>1 clove garlic</li>\n\t<li>Zest of 1 lemon</li>\n\t<li>1 teaspoon lemon juice</li>\n\t<li>½ teaspoon kosher salt</li>\n\t<li>¼ teaspoon pepper</li>\n\t<li>2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a large, low-sided roasting pan, place asparagus in a single layer. Drizzle with oil and garlic. Toss well.</p>\n\n<p>Roast for 12 – 14 minutes (depending on thickness of asparagus and color, white takes longer, and thin asparagus might be cooked through with only 7 minutes cooking time). Remove from oven. Sprinkle lemon zest, juice, salt, pepper and parsley over asparagus.</p>\n\n<p>Serve warm or at room temperature.</p>\n\n<p>SAVORY AND SWEET COLA BRISKET</p>\n\n<p>Serves 10</p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>1 (5 to 6 pound) brisket</li>\n\t<li>1/2 cup light brown sugar</li>\n\t<li>4 cloves garlic, minced</li>\n\t<li>1 tablespoon ground cumin</li>\n\t<li>1 tablespoon salt</li>\n\t<li>1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper</li>\n\t<li>2 onions, coarsely chopped</li>\n\t<li>2 cups low-sodium broth or water</li>\n\t<li>1 cup cola (regular not diet)</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.</p>\n\n<p>In a small dish, mix together the brown sugar, garlic, cumin, salt, and cayenne. Rub the mixture generously and evenly over the brisket.</p>\n\n<p>In a large roasting pan or Dutch oven, place the chopped onions on the bottom of the pan. Top with the brisket. Pour broth, and cola on top of and around brisket. Cover tightly, and cook for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.</p>\n\n<p>Cool and slice thinly. Return to pan juices. Rewarm covered.
