(Or grape juice, it’s fine.)</p>\n\n<p><strong>E</strong> is for <strong>Egypt</strong>, land the Jews fled.<br />\nThen shook the Egyptians in the Sea that is Red.</p>\n\n<p><strong>F</strong> is for <strong>Fish</strong>, “gefilte” it’s called,<br />\nCarp and pike, both thoroughly mauled.</p>\n\n\n\n<p> is for <strong>Gathering</strong>, that’s what we do!<br />\nThe more, the moanier, when you’re a Jew.</p>\n\n<p><strong>H</strong> is for <strong>Hebrew</strong>, language Semitic.<br />\n“I’m saying it wrong? Everybody’s a critic!”</p>\n\n<p><strong>I</strong> is for <strong>Israel</strong>, the land we hold dear.<br />\nBut no rush to go; there’s always next year!</p>\n\n<p><strong>J</strong> is for <strong>Jewish</strong> — that is, not a goy.<br />\nYou know, like that nice Star-of-Bethlehem boy.</p>\n\n\n\n<p> is for <strong>Kosher</strong>, fit for consumption.<br />\nOr, put another way: “okay to eat,” according to basic laws derived from two of the five books of the Torah — Leviticus and Deuteronomy; but the details and practical applications of those laws were transmitted over centuries through oral law (eventually codified in the Mishnah and Talmud) and later elaborated upon in rabbinical literature… and the rationale for most of which is nowhere to be found.</p>\n\n<p><strong>L</strong> is for <strong>Lamb</strong>, star meat of the meal.<br />\nSo tender! Oh, wait… no — that’s veal.</p>\n\n<p><strong>M</strong> is for <strong>Matzo</strong>, a crispy delight.<br />\n(Yet fifty-one weeks of the year: out of sight.)</p>\n\n<p><strong>N</strong> is for <strong>Neighbors</strong>, like-minded feasters.<br />\nUnless they’re the kind who celebrate Easters.</p>\n\n<p><strong>O’s</strong> for <strong>Oppression</strong>, cruel subjugation.<br />\nWas that any way to treat God’s Chosen Nation?</p>\n\n<p><strong>P</strong> is for <strong>Pharaohs</strong>, harsh ancient rulers,<br />\nWho nearly deprived mankind of wholesale jewelers.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Q</strong> is for <strong>Questions</strong>, of which there are four:<br />\n“Why us?” <br />\n“Is it over?” <br />\n“When’s dinner?” <br />\n“There’s more?!”</p>\n\n<p><strong>R’s</strong> for the holiday highlight: the <strong>reading</strong>.<br />\nI’m kidding! We’re Jews. It’s all about eating.</p>\n\n<p><strong>S</strong> is for <strong>Seder</strong>, from Hebrew for “order.”<br />\nEach one takes as long as the journey to Mordor.</p>\n\n<p><strong>T’s</strong> for <strong>Tradition</strong>. (I’m sure that you knew it!)<br />\n“Because your great-grandmother did it,” you do it.</p>\n\n<p><strong>U’s</strong> for <strong>Unleavened</strong>, describing the food,<br />\nBut also, in consequence, everyone’s mood.</p>\n\n<p><strong>V</strong> is for <strong>Visitors</strong>. Pull up a chair!<br />\nThinking of slipping out early? Don’t you dare.</p>\n\n<p><strong>W</strong>: <strong>Wisdom</strong>, the words of the sages.<br />\nBut seriously, guys.
