At the Passover Seder, we drink four cups of wine. People have come up with many reasons for this difference.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Four Empires</strong></p>\n\n<p>Some argue that the four cups symbolize the four empires that oppressed the Jewish people in ancient times. We remember these four empires because all types of tyranny must pass away before the world is free. [attributed to Rabbi Eugene Horowitz]</p>\n\n<p><strong>Four Corners</strong></p>\n\n<p>The four cups can also represent the four corners of the earth. If freedom is limited to just one spot, or just your home, then true freedom has not been realized. Freedom must reign everywhere.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Four Seasons</strong></p>\n\n<p>The four cups can also stand for the four seasons of the year. We cannot simply speak of and think about freedom today, or when it is threatened. Freedom must be in our minds and guarded at all times.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Four Promises</strong></p>\n\n<p>יְיָ promised the Jews in Exodus:</p>\n\n<ol>\n\t<li>I will <strong>free</strong> you from the labor of the Egyptians</li>\n\t<li>And <strong>deliver </strong>you from their bondage.</li>\n\t<li>I will <strong>redeem</strong> you with an outstretched arm</li>\n\t<li>And I will <strong>take</strong> you to be my people, and I will be<strong> </strong>your G-d.</li>\n</ol>\n\n<p>Passover is a celebration of the fulfillment of these promises. The matzah are unleavened (not given time to rise) because the Jews had no time to let the dough rise when they were driven out of Egypt.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>A roasted shankbone </em> </strong>The roasted leg from a sheep or lamb represents the ancient Passover sacrifice of a lamb.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Parsley </em> </strong>It represents the renewal of the spring, and our faith that renewal will always come. This can actually be any green herb (but we like parsley!).</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Horseradish </em> </strong>This is the maror, a bitter herb that stands as a symbol of the bitterness our ancestors experienced as slaves in Egypt. It is also a symbol of the bitterness of all before and since who have suffered oppression and slavery.</p>\n\n<p> <em><strong>Charoset </strong></em> This delicious mix represents the mortar that our ancestors used while doing Pharaoh's labor.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>A roasted egg </em> </strong>The egg represents the triumph of life over death and the new life that comes with spring</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>An orange </em> </strong>This is newer object for the Seder plate. Although we first heard of it as a response to a negative, in truth the orange symbolizes the sweetness and fruitfulness we can experience in our lives and in our faith when we make a commitment to respect those with whom we do not easily identify.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Elijah's cup </em> </strong>Every Seder table has a cup of wine for the Prophet Elijah. Traditionally, Elijah visits every Jewish home at some time during the Seder and has a taste of wine from the cup set aside for him.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Miriam's cup</em> </strong> This cup symbolizes and acknowledges all that women have contributed to our faith and our understanding of יְיָ over the years.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Wine </em> </strong>The wine symbolizes joy and freedom. House rules are \"bottoms up\", so choose your glass wisely and fill judiciously!</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Salt water </em> </strong>The salt water represents the tears the Israelites shed during their oppression under the Egyptians, and the tears of all those who suffer.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>The empty chair </em> </strong>One chair is always left empty to symbolize the Jews who cannot celebrate Passover openly or freely. They are remembered and welcomed into our Seder on this night.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>The Haggadah </em> </strong> This word literally means \"to tell\". It is important to recognize, however, that women have always, in many and varied ways, contributed and led and pushed their communities forward.</p>\n\n<p>Miriam's cup is filled with water, not wine. Water, while not always celebrated, is fundamental to life. In this imperfect world, joy cannot come without sorrow, life cannot be without death. We can view <em>Yachatz</em>, the breaking, as symbolic of all the breakings that characterize the most significant experiences of our lives: birth of a child, going to school, moving out, falling in love and losing love, marrying and leaving our solitary life, divorces, deaths, changing jobs. The list goes on and on, and so do our lives, fractured like a beautiful and intricate mosaic, only truly visible when you can stand back and see the whole.</p>\n\n<p>Half of the Matzah becomes the <em>Afikomen</em>, and is hidden away to be shared later, as in earlier Passovers, the offering at the temple would be shared out among the Jews. We do share, in the joys and sorrows and condition of others. Our hope of freedom ultimately depends on the deliverance from bondage of all people, everywhere. For the sake of our redemption, we say together the ancient words which join us together with all who are in need:</p>\n\n<p>הא לחמא עניא די אכלו אבהתנא בארעא דמצרים. כל דכפין ייתי ויכל. כל דצריך ייתי ויפסח. השתא הכא. לשנה הבאה בארעא דישראל. השתא עבדי. לשנה הבאה בני חורין</p>\n\n<p>Ha lachma anya di achalu avahatana b'ara d'Mitzrayim. Kal dichfin yeitei v'yeichul. Kal ditzrich yeitei v'yifsach. Hashata hacha, l'shanah haba'ah b'ara d'Yisrael. Hashata avdei. L'shana haba'ah b'nei chorin.</p>\n\n<p>This is the bread of affliction, which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt.<br />\nLet all who are hungry come and eat.<br />\nLet all who are in need come and share the hope of Passover.<br />\nAs we celebrate here, we join with our people everywhere.<br />\nThis year we are here: Next year, in the land of Israel.<br />\nThis year we are slaves: Next year may we all be free.</p>\n\n<p>This statement of welcoming into the Passover Seder is written in Aramaic, not Hebrew. According to Jewish legend, Aramaic is the one language angels do not understand. Perhaps the <em>Ha Lachma</em> is written in Aramaic to remind us of those who do not feel that they can call on the angels for help.
