"body": "
Passover is replete with symbols. Each item on the traditional seder plate recalls a different part of the Exodus story, and meaningful symbols are being added all the time.
\n\n
This year, Jewish World Watch suggests creating a Second Seder Plate for your table, to help you identify with the realities of the tragic present being experienced by so many people today in JWW’s areas of focus. About a third of those fleeing genocide and mass atrocities today live as refugees under dire conditions outside their native countries.
\n\n
You can adapt your Second Seder Plate to reflect your own concerns. The one we have created contains new symbols for age-old problems – and in some cases offers some modern solutions – focused on the vulnerable populations Jewish World Watch serves across the globe.
\n\n
We hope your Second Seder Plate will inspire new conversations at your seder and encourage everyone around the table to take action to help those in need. Chag sameach.
\n\n
To download full-color PDF copies of this guide, please visit jww.org/SederSederPlate. And please don't forget to share: #SecondSederPlate
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a tomato on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
The tomato reminds us that everyone needs food to survive, but displaced people often don’t get sufficient rations. Creating a garden, however, is possible, even in an African refugee camp. No space? No water? No seeds or good soil? No problem. You can grow a lot with limited resources thanks to perma-gardening, a highly efficient farming system that allows refugees to grow nutritious crops year-round by using improved soil fertilization methods and wastewater.
\n\n
FACT: More than 300,000 Darfuris currently live in refugee camps in eastern Chad, their home since fleeing the genocide that began in 2003. The food rations they receive are not enough to live on.
\n\n
ACT: Through perma-gardening, Darfuri refugees can produce their own food and become more self-reliant. Donate to help Jewish World Watch provide a refugee family with the skills and tools to start a perma-garden.
\n\n
DISCUSS: How can you create your own efficient garden?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s perma-gardening efforts at jww.org/perma-gardening
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a glass of water on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
Unlike the salt water on our traditional seder plate, which symbolizes our enslaved ancestors’ bitter tears, this water represents a source of hope. Fresh water is in short supply in the refugee settlements housing survivors who fled atrocities in South Sudan, but drilling new wells can provide clean water.
\n\n
FACT: More than 2 million South Sudanese have fled civil war and man-made famine. Many have settled in overcrowded camps in northern Uganda, where there is deplorable sanitation and not enough safe water.
\n\n
ACT: Jewish World Watch is drilling eight essential wells in Uganda’s Palabek Refugee Settlement this year. With your support we can supply even more clean water for thousands of refugees.
\n\n
DISCUSS: List all the ways that you could save water on a daily basis.
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s efforts to drill borehole wells at jww.org/cleanwater
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a cell phone on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
On most nights, we use our phones to talk, text and check social media, but on this night we turn them off. This phone reminds us of the conflict minerals mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where children are often forced to work under unsafe conditions.
\n\n
FACT: The mining of tin, tungsten, tantalum, gold and other minerals such as cobalt often supports armed groups in the Congo, and impoverished children are often the ones doing the mining to support their families. Sending Congolese children to school is the best way to keep them from working in the mines, but they need help covering school fees and other related expenses to get an education.
\n\n
ACT: Research products before you buy them – your cell phone, your hybrid car and more – to make sure the company you’re buying from is making the best effort to responsibly source its materials. Keep children out of mines by helping Jewish World Watch pay for their school fees.
\n\n
DISCUSS: How do your decisions about what to buy affect others?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s efforts to ensure the conflict-free status of mines in the Congo a jww.org/conflictminerals
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why are matches on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
Fire isn’t one of the plagues in the Passover story, but it could have been – its destructive nature is well known. For the Rohingya, an ethnic minority living in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), the military has used fire to destroy many villages in brutal attacks. Survivors urgently need emergency supplies, but the Rohingya also need U.S. lawmakers to pass legislation to help protect them and prevent further violence.
\n\n
FACT: Since late August, more than 688,000 Rohingya have fled ethnic cleansing in Myanmar and crossed into neighboring Bangladesh, where they have created the world’s largest refugee settlements.
\n\n
ACT: Ask your representatives to support bills currently being considered in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives supporting human rights in Myanmar.
\n\n
DISCUSS: How is it possible that genocide is still happening in the 21st century?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s advocacy efforts and send a letter to your representatives at action.jww.org
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a toy on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
A disturbing number of today’s refugees are children. Across the globe, nearly 1 child in 200 is a refugee. This adds up to tens of millions of children displaced by violence, poverty and other factors. Whole generations are being born in refugee camps, where they often lack proper nutrition, education and opportunities to play.
\n\n
FACT: Some 8.6 million Syrian children are in immediate need of aid. Some 2.6 million Syrian children are living as refugees or on the run. Of the more than 688,000 Rohingya who have fled Myanmar for camps in Bangladesh since August, nearly 400,000 are children.
\n\n
ACT: Support Jewish World Watch’s many programs offering educational assistance to children and the schools that serve them.
\n\n
DISCUSS: How do you think violence and displacement affect children?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s efforts to educate displaced children at jww.org/projects
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a bandage on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
Too many innocent people wounded during Syria’s civil war lack life-saving medical aid because large humanitarian organizations cannot enter areas being actively bombed. Jewish World Watch has partnered with an organization that transports essential supplies directly to doctors working to save lives deep inside the heart of the conflict.
\n\n
FACT: Syria’s civil war has killed nearly 500,000 people – 55,000 of them children. It has also left half of the country’s population displaced.
\n\n
ACT: Support Jewish World Watch’s efforts to transport supplies to doctors and hospitals in the heart of the conflict.
\n\n
DISCUSS: What would it be like to be wounded and without adequate medical supplies?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s medical shipments in Syria at jww.org/syria
",

There are currently 68.5 million people forcibly displaced worldwide, 85 percent of them living in developing countries.
\n\n
During Passover, the symbolic items on the traditional seder plate help us to tell the story of the Exodus, with its plagues, hardship, flight and tears. At some seders, people add additional symbols to the plate to spark discussion and make their Passover conversation more relevant to today.
\n\n
This year Jewish World Watch is offering new ideas for a “Second Seder Plate,” including a new set of symbols to remind us of today’s exoduses and how they impact contemporary refugees. Once again, we hope to encourage reflection: As we recall what the Hebrews endured in Egypt, we can take some time to consider the plight of the modern-day displaced who have suffered from genocide and mass atrocities.
\n\n
These symbols are drawn from everyday objects around the house and are meant to inspire you to find your own. This pamphlet is perforated so you can easily create flash cards that can be matched with your items on your seder plate. Or you can create your own version of a “Second Seder Plate” that will allow you to tell your own stories.
\n\n
The goal is to deepen our empathy for today’s most vulnerable people.
\n\n
We hope your seder will be filled with new ideas and learning. Please encourage everyone at your table to take action to offer help in some form, from raising your voices to advocate for refugees worldwide to supporting projects that enable and sustain the vulnerable. Thank you for joining us as we partner together to prevent future Exoduses.
\n\n
Chag Sameach and Happy Passover from the Board and Staff of Jewish World Watch.
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a radish on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
Radishes are just one of the vegetables that Darfuri refugees now grow in the desert of eastern Chad, where they have been living in temporary camps since fleeing genocide in Sudan as long as 16 years ago. The explosion of refugees worldwide has forced aid organizations to cut rations, and the Darfuris are among those suffering from malnutrition as a result. With your support, Jewish World Watch and our partners teach refugees in the camps highly water-efficient perma-gardening to grow lush crops that can survive the harsh Chadian climate. This gardening technique provides food for entire families and communities.
\n\n
FACT: Chad is home to some 400,000 refugees, of which 310,000 are from the Darfur region in Sudan.
\n\n
DISCUSS: What are five ways food insecurity can impact a person’s daily life?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s project to teach efficient gardening techniques to the Darfuris at jww.org/perma-gardening
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why are crayons on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
Children love to draw; it’s one of the first activities in early education. However, crayons — let alone education — can be a luxury to many children. Often, children in refugee camps have no schools to attend, likewise in the impoverished regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tuition and fees can put schooling out of reach. Poor youth are forced to labor to support their families, such as by working in dangerous mines extracting valuable minerals that are then sold to support the militias. Without an education, these children can be susceptible to the lure of militias and other dangerous occupations as they grow up. With your help, JWW is paying for tuition and fees to provide an education to hundreds of children in need.
\n\n
FACT: In the DRC, 3.5 million children, 26.7% of the country’s primary-age children, do not attend school.
\n\n
DISCUSS: How might drawings by a child from the DRC differ from pictures drawn by a child in the United States?
\n\n
Learn about Jewish World Watch’s education programs in the DRC at jww.org/DRC-education
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why are heirlooms on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
During the Holocaust, many survivors held on to family photos and jewelry; some hid valuables in hopes of returning one day to retrieve what they owned. When a refugee flees, there’s very little time to gather belongings and keepsakes. If the refugee is on foot, which is often the case, then only the bare minimum can be carried. Valuables, such as necklaces and watches, are common mementos because they are often small and can easily be hidden. These pieces can be bartered for food and other necessities. The jewelry on this Second Seder Plate represents heirlooms passed on by family members through generations, preserving a connection to their past.
\n\n
FACT: Refugees often have very little time to save valued family keepsakes.
\n\n
DISCUSS: What would you bring if you had to flee your home without warning?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s current advocacy on behalf of refugees and other conflict affected people at jww.org/actions
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is a water gun on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
To many of us, even a toy water gun suggests violence. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, some young children are forced to pick up and use real guns, not toys. Boys and girls as young as 10 years old are being abducted and conscripted into militias, where they serve as soldiers and slaves, often fighting alongside adults. Through your support, Jewish World Watch is working with experts in the DRC to extract these children from horrible circumstances, and, once they’re safe, to provide them with both physical and psychological transitional support so they can return to their families and communities.
\n\n
FACT: Currently, an estimated 300,000 children are actively serving as soldiers around the world.
\n\n
DISCUSS: What would you give to a former child soldier to help him or her heal?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s advocacy efforts on behalf of young children at jww.org/actions
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why are burnt matches on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
There are many ways to destroy lives; fire is a potent one. The Myanmar military burned whole villages as part of a reign of terror to expel the Rohingya, a mostly Muslim ethnic group that has for generations experienced government-sanctioned discrimination in Myanmar. Tens of thousands have died in the Rohingya genocide, and some 900,000 have fled to neighboring Bangladesh, where many now live in fragile shelters. Fire was effectively used to destroy much of the evidence of the systemic murder in Myanmar, and as new vegetation fills in, the renewed land has allowed the Myanmar government to deny the genocide ever occurred. With your support, Jewish World Watch is helping to provide Rohingya families in refugee camps in Bangladesh with safer and more secure housing, as well as medical aid.
\n\n
FACT: Today, more than 900,000 Rohingya live in refugee camps in Bangladesh.
\n\n
DISCUSS: How do you prove a village once existed when all evidence has been burned and covered by new vegetation?
\n\n
Learn about Jewish World Watch’s efforts to provide housing for the Rohingya at jww.org/rohingya-housing
\n\n
-
\n\n
Why is an Rx bottle on our Second Seder Plate?
\n\n
We take medicine for granted, but what happens to people in a war zone? For the brave doctors who have remained in war-torn Syria, it is almost impossible to get medical supplies. With your support, Jewish World Watch has partnered with a humanitarian aid program to bring large shipments of medical supplies to heal the wounded and sick inside Syria.
\n\n
FACT: More than just medicine, war zone doctors need everything from surgical gloves to syringes, and all of it must be delivered at great risk.
\n\n
DISCUSS: What would it be like to be a doctor without supplies on the frontline of a war?
\n\n
Learn more about Jewish World Watch’s medical supply shipments to Syria at jww.org/syria
\n\n
-
\n\n
Jewish World Watch is an expression of Judaism in action, bringing help and healing to survivors of mass atrocities around the globe and seeking to inspire people of all faiths and cultures to join the ongoing fight against genocide. Some people add additional items to their plate to spark conversation about issues of the day.
\n\n
With our third annual Second Seder Plate, Jewish World Watch once again is inviting everyone to take this trend a step further, to focus on this challenging moment in time, when forced exodus has become commonplace across the world, and the plight of the 70.8 million refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide is so precarious. We encourage you to create a Second Seder Plate for your table to inspire reflection: As we recall what the Hebrews endured in Egypt, we can take a few moments to talk about the modern-day survivors of genocide and mass atrocities.
\n\n
We have created a sample plate with easy-to-find objects that will be familiar to people of all ages. The symbols we suggest may also inspire you to find your own objects to serve as reminders of the disadvantaged and displaced.
\n\n
The goal is to deepen our empathy for the world’s most vulnerable people so that we will act on their behalf.
\n\n
We hope your Seder will be filled with new ideas and learning. Please encourage everyone at your table to follow up by reaching out to help in some way. We have suggestions based on our work on each of the perforated, easily detachable cards that follow.
