"body": "<div><p style=\"text-align:center;\">Dipping a green vegetable in salt water | <em>karpas</em> | כַּרְפַּס</p><p>Passover, like many of our holidays, combines the celebration of an event from our Jewish past with a recognition of the nature around us. As we remember the liberation from Egypt, we also recognize the begining of spring and rebirth happening in the world around us. The symbols on our table bring together elements of both kinds of celebration.</p><p>We now take a vegetable, representing our joy at the dawning of spring after our long, cold winter. We now dip it into salt water, a symbol of the tears our ancestors shed as slaves. While we eat it, some people have the custom to lean to the left because we are free now, and are just rembering the slavery. Except others do not lean, because we are feeling the slavery as we taste the tears. Before we eat it, we recite a short blessing:</p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה:</p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.</p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, King of the Universe, who creates fruit of the ground;</p></div>",

"body": "<p style=\"text-align:center;\">הא לחמא עניא- Ha Lachma Anya</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">Magid starts with Ha Lachma Anya. We invite anyone to come join us at our seder. </p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">Ha Lachma Anya is not said in Hebrew, like the rest of the Hagada. It is in Aramaic. Why is it in Aramaic? </p><p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>1. </strong>One answer is that at the time, most people spoke Aramaic. We want to invite anyone who wants to come, and if the people do not understand, our invitation is pointless. </p><p style=\"text-align:left;\"><strong>2.</strong> Another answer is that Aramaic is the only language that the Malachim (Angels of G-d) don't understand. On the night of the Seder we are at such a high level of holiness, that we are talking straight to G-d himself, with no Angels in between.</p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span>We sing Ha Lachma Anya:</span></p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">הא לחמא עניא די אכלו אבהתנא בארעא דמצרים. כל דכפין ייתי ויכל. כל דצריך ייתי ויפסח. השתא הכא. לשנה הבאה בארעא דישראל. השתא עבדי. לשנה הבאה בני חורין</p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">Ha lachma anya di achalu avahatana b'ara d'Mitzrayim. Kal dichfin yeitei v'yeichul. Kal ditzrich yeitei v'yifsach. Hashata hacha, l'shanah haba'ah b'ara d'Yisrael. Hashata avdei. L'shana haba'ah b'nei chorin.</p><p style=\"text-align:center;\">This is the bread of affliction that our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat. Let all who are in need come and celebrate Passover. Now we are here. Next year in the land of Israel. Now we are slaves. Next year we will be free.</p>",

Then break the middle matzah in two and set aside the larger piece as the afikoman, because more is hidden than is revealed.</em> </p><p> <em><br /></em> Even before we speak about the matzah, we break it. Why do we begin our seder by breaking the matzah? <em></em> </p><p>Our Rabbis teach that Israel was redeemed from Egypt because of these merits: our ancestors did not change their names; our ancestors did not change their language. They defied the anonymity of servitude, and kept safe the language of home.</p><p>We set aside the broken portion of matzah to remember that what seems lost may be recovered, what seems broken may be repaired.</p><p>Redemption begins with remembering.</p>",

"body": "<p>The chacham asks, \"What are the rulings, the laws, and the traditions which God has commanded us?\"</p><p>We answer, \"With a strong hand, God took us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.\"</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">You are the bright child, sure and clear and eager. Your questions are your strength. Keep asking, and going deeper, turning each question so it yields a new response.</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">The rasha asks, \"What is this service to you?\"</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">We answer: \"to you\" and not \"to him. Jews from the community , and thus reject an essential tenet of our tradition. You should give people a sharp answer and set their teeth on edge, saying, \"Because of what God did for me when I came out of Egypt.\" \"For me\" and not \"For them.\" For if they had been there, they would not have been redeemed.</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">You are the angry child. What is the source of your anger? Is your place at the table too narrow for your spirit? Open the door and look out, beyond this room, beyond this night. Can you see a freedom that is beyond our sight?</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">The tam asks, \"What is this?\"</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">You instruct this one in the precepts of Passover, including, \"One must not continue to feast after sharing the afikioman.\"</p><p style=\"text-align:left;\">Your question is simple, but you have much more to ask, much more to tell. Perhaps we need to listen for the question within your question, for the question behind your question.</p><p>For the she-eino yodei-a lishol, the one who does not know how to ask, you must open open the door. The Torah teaches: \"You shall teach your children on that day, 'because of what the Holy One did for me when I went out of Egypt.'\"</p><p>You are the child whose silence speaks for many who do not know how to begin. We are enriched by your presence tonight. The story will become clear. It will become yours.</p>",
