Speak up, judge righteously, champion the poor and the needy\".</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>WHAT DOES THE SKEPTICAL CHILD ASK?</em> </strong></p>\n\n<p> <em>How can I solve problems of such enormity?</em> </p>\n\n<p>Encourage him by explaining that he need not solve the problems, he must only do what he is capable of doing. "body": "<p><strong>Other thoughts about the orange on the Seder plate:</strong></p>\n\n<p>Symbolically the orange represents the Jewish people as a community, whole but made up of many sections. The skin of the orange is our Jewish consciousness that surrounds us. In addition, the seeds inside represent the multiple seeds that can give birth to new ways of expressing our faith. The juiciness and seeds of all people, even those of the marginalized like those with disabilities or those who are gay or lesbian or transgender contribute to nourishing each new generation with the richness of our traditions.</p>\n\n<p><strong>More about the egg:</strong></p>\n\n<p>Symbolically the egg stands for the desecration of that which is sacred and its rebirth, the destruction of the ancient temple and the birth of modern Judaism. The egg is the symbol of the potential for every tragic event to result in renewal and for each human being who has experienced trauma or loss to experience the rebirth of their souls.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>We know the traditional answers to this question. We know about eating matzoh, and bitter herbs, about dipping, and reclining. But there are far deeper answers that connect the themes of Passover to our world's most pressing problems.</p>\n\n<p>On most other nights we allow the news of tragedy in distant places to pass us by. We succumb to compassion fatigue- aware that we cannot possibly respond to every injustice or tragedy that arises around the world.</p>\n\n<p>On this night, we are reminded that our legacy as the descendants of slaves creates in us a different kind of responsibility- we are to protect the stranger because we were strangers in the land of Egypt.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Let's add a fifth question: How can we make this year different from all other years?</strong></p>\n\n<p>When tasting matzoh, the bread of poverty, find ways to help the poor and the hungry.</p>\n\n<p>When eating the bitter herbs, commit to help those whose lives are embittered by disease.</p>\n\n<p>When dipping our food into salt water, share the tears of sadness of those who are oppressed by others and those who feel vulnerable and hopeless.</p>\n\n<p>When thinking about the 10 ancient plagues, commit to help those who suffer from today's afflictions- earthquakes, hurricanes, tainted water, HIV, Zika, ...</p>\n\n<p>When reclining in celebration of our freedom, seek opportunities to help those still oppressed today including but not limited to the young girls in Nigeria (Boku Haram), the refugees being forced to flee Syria, women and children forced to work long hours without rest or sustenance in dangerous and unsanitary conditions, and to the victims on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Think about those in our own country who face discrimination either because of their race, their religion, or their sexual orientation.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>Harry Potter had much bitterness in his life. Deprived of his parents at a young age, his life at the Dursleys was miserable. At Hogwarts, through no fault of his own, he was the target of both students and teachers. And of course he was always in life threatening peril from the man who had killed his parents. If anyone had the right to feel embittered, it was Harry. And yet, he showed that you can experience bitterness without becoming embittered. You can take the lessons of your suffering and use them to appreciate your blessings and to spare others suffering. This is how we experience the bitter herb at Passover. We recognize the bitterness of our servitude, but as we are about to see, we use it as a prelude to sweetness and as a lesson to prevent others from suffering like we did.</p>\n",

"body": "<h4><a href=\"https://www.haggadot.com/clip/whats-table\">What's on the Table</a></h4>\n\n<p>Contributed By <a href=\"https://www.haggadot.com/contributors-details/geoff-chesman\">Geoff Chesman</a></p>\n\n<p><strong>The Seder Plate</strong></p>\n\n<p>We place a Seder Plate at our table as a reminder to discuss certain aspects of the Passover story. Each item has its own significance.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Maror</em> – The bitter herb. This symbolizes the harshness of lives of the Jews in Egypt.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Charoset</em> – A delicious mix of sweet wine, apples, cinnamon and nuts that resembles the mortar used as bricks of the many buildings the Jewish slaves built in Egypt</p>\n\n<p> <em>Karpas</em> – A green vegetable, usually parsley, is a reminder of the green sprouting up all around us during spring and is used to dip into the saltwater</p>\n\n<p> <em>Zeroah </em> – A roasted lamb or shank bone symbolizing the sacrifice made at the great temple on Passover (The Paschal Lamb)</p>\n\n<p> <em>Beitzah</em> – The egg symbolizes a different holiday offering that was brought to the temple. Since eggs are the first item offered to a mourner after a funeral, some say it also evokes a sense of mourning for the destruction of the temple.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Orange</em> - The orange on the seder plate has come to symbolize full inclusion in modern day Judaism: not only for women, but also for people with disabilities, intermarried couples, and the LGBT Community.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Olive</em> - The olive on the Seder plate is for peace in Ukraine. When the dove left Noah's ark and returned with an olive branch, it was a sign that the water was subsiding and that human life would go on. The olive has become a symbol of hope and peace. Tonight Ukrainian Jews are not reclining. Instead they are running and fighting for their lives along with all Ukranians. They are counting casualties instead of plagues. Please eat an olive as you hold the victims of war in your heart. </p>\n\n<p><strong>Matzah</strong></p>\n\n<p>Matzah is the unleavened bread we eat to remember that when the jews fled Egypt, they didn’t even have time to let the dough rise on their bread. We commemorate this by removing all bread and bread products from our home during Passover.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Elijah’s Cup</strong></p>\n\n<p>The fifth ceremonial cup of wine poured during the Seder. It is left untouched in honor of Elijah, who, according to tradition, will arrive one day as an unknown guest to herald the advent of the Messiah. During the Seder dinner, biblical verses are read while the door is briefly opened to welcome Elijah. In this way the Seder dinner not only commemorates the historical redemption from Egyptian bondage of the Jewish people but also calls to mind their future redemption when Elijah and the Messiah shall appear.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Miriam’s Cup</strong></p>\n\n<p>Another relatively new Passover tradition is that of Miriam’s cup. The cup is filled with water and placed next to Elijah’s cup. Miriam was the sister of Moses and a prophetess in her own right. After the exodus when the Israelites are wandering through the desert, just as Hashem gave them Manna to eat, legend says that a well of water followed Miriam and it was called ‘Miriam’s Well’. The tradition of Miriam’s cup is meant to honor Miriam’s role in the story of the Jewish people and the spirit of all women, who nurture their families just as Miriam helped sustain the Israelites.</p>",
