The Prophets' Cup
The Third Cup of Wine – The Cup of the Prophets
After each participant honors a prophet, a few drops from the participant’s cup should be poured into the prophets’ cup.
Leader: (said while filling third cup)
We dedicate the third cup to the prophets; those who speak out against dishonesty and injustice wherever they see it. Prophets take many forms; political leaders, teachers, healers, drummers and even midwives. Through them, we learn to speak out against injustice, to help those in need, and to right the wrongs committed against others and ourselves.
Participant:
Now we each welcome the prophets. All tellers of truth are prophets of the Divine. Tonight we honor those who speak to our hearts, from Miriam to Dr. Martin Luther King.
Volunteer opens the front door. Each participant names a “Teller of Truth” or a Prophet and then pours a few drops from his/her cup into the Prophets’ cup, as we all say – “we honor you.”
Participant:
Elijah, by tradition, we honor you first. - The Prophet Elijah, who will come to prepare the path of Messiah; Elijah who will come to teach us that all the true paths lead toward Peace.
All:
Elijah, we honor you.
Participant
The Prophetess Miriam, on whose merits the children of Israel were given a well to quench their thirst through the long years in the desert. Miriam, who led the women, who foresaw Moses’ birth, and who stood with her brothers to lead her people to freedom – we honor you.
All:
Miriam, we honor you.
Participant
The Prophet Aaron, the one who spoke the words Moses could not. We honor you, Aaron for your purity, goodness, and dedication to your people and your G-d.
All:
Aaron, we honor you.
Participant:
The Prophet Moses, we spill this wine for you as you spilled blood for us. Moses, whose journey led his people to freedom, we honor you.
All:
Moses, we honor you.
Participants:
Share the story of “teller of truth” and why you honor him/her and pour a few drops into the Prophets’ cup
All:
May the spirit of the prophets enter the hearts of all of us, and all people, and may their stories inspire us to build a good world, in which justice and freedom is the inheritance of all.
All:
Blessed are You, Spirit of Life, Divine Presence that fills Creation ripening the fruit of the vine.
