This piece is called the afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek. \n\n\n\nWe eat matzah in memory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. As slaves, they had faced many false starts before finally being let go. You have to practically squeeze yourself into that alley as you walk down its staircase. It was at the upper entrance that a long-time Tzfat resident, Savta (“Grandma”) Yocheved Rosenthal, sat daily for decades before her death in the 1970s. She was awaiting the messiah’s arrival, as he would pass through Tzfat from nearby Mount Meron on his triumphant final journey to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The other residents thought she was deranged, but Rosenthal angrily refused to cease sitting at that entrance each day. She would wait there with food, as well as a cup of tea and a cup of coffee, worried that she had no idea which beverage the messiah would prefer. Or maybe it’s an October in Ohio and we’re back on my rooftop, tipsy and taking in the relative quiet after I dragged you to your first and last tailgate party. It could be July in some seaside city whose name I mispronounced when I first suggested we take a trip there and whose name I’ve mispronounced every time since because I like the laugh you try and fail to cage in your throat when I do. We could be anywhere. We are electric with knowing we could be anywhere.\n\n\n\nA car drives by with a song we both like leaking from its open windows. Electricity again: We could go to a club tonight, drink until we hear that song and embarrass ourselves on the dance floor. We could <a href=\"https://www.thecut.com/article/covid-isolation-changed-social-lives-fix.html\">invite some people over</a> for a house party and play the song on repeat as many times as we want. One midrash (traditional legend) credits her for convincing her parents—exhausted and traumatized by slavery—to conceive Moses, a hero of the Jewish people. She was also brave enough to risk asking the daughter of Pharaoh himself if Yocheved, Moses’ (and her) mother, could serve as a wet-nurse for the baby. Her bravery and charm thus enabled the family to stay together and earn wages. Miriam later led the women and children—the backbone of Jewish life—safely to shore across the Red Sea, dancing and singing. The Torah teaches that she was a prophet; she reminds us caring for women, children and families is a critical part of our connection to the holy. We honor her tenacity. They talk about spiritual chametz as the puffy, overextended parts of our ego—the way we try to posture and preen, to be someone in the world (or in the room) rather than just existing as we are, being gentle and modest, a mere humble matzah. \n\nPassover humility message from 19th c. Lithuanian Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehudah Berlin (Netziv),\n\n<blockquote>\n Leaven may not be eaten [on Passover]... In order to instill the memory in our hearts through a physical action which shows and reminds us of this idea: Matzah takes no advantage of the human technological ingenuity which allows humans to raise the dough more than simple flour and water which are created by God. \n\n Chametz is the epitome of human involvement in nature. Chametz, here: the one in the state of being oppressed/the one in the state of having cruelty done to them.\n\nSo getting rid of chametz would be, perhaps, a twin endeavor. Both to search out the places where we have been, are, the one who brings this sourness, harshness, cruelty to the world.\n\nAnd perhaps to also see and attend to the ways in which we have had cruelty done to us—the hurt places. The grudges to which we are finally willing to let go. THE FIRST CUP OF WINE Shifra and Puah

Shifra and Puah were the midwives who refused Pharaoh’s orders to kill

any boys born to an Israelite family. When confronted by Pharaoh, they

lied and claimed that they simply couldn’t get there before the babies were

born. These midwives risked their own lives to help save the Israelites from

destruction and genocide. They practiced civil disobedience from their

unique position of influence and refused to “just follow orders” when those

orders were unjust. We honor their resistance.

Let us all say their names together: Shifra and Puah.
