It is left untouched in honor of Elijah. During the Seder dinner, the door is briefly opened to welcome Elijah. In my family, that is when a cousin jumps out and scares the little kids opening the door while the adults drink the wine left for Elijah - and convince the already terrified kids that Elijah drank it. If Elijah does show up at your seder, remember to keep him 6 ft away. It's unclear how many houses he's been to.
\n\n
Miriam’s Cup
\n\n
To honor Moses' sister, Miriam, a cup filled with water and placed next to Elijah’s cup. Yet we recite them in song every year and adults will typcially go around the room answering using the dull text in the traditional hagaddah. We do this becuase it is familiar. It's tradition.
\n\n
Perhaps it's this same reason women are not progressing in society as we should. What would the comfort level be on an airplane if a woman's voice spoke through the sound system and greeted everyone with a \"hello, this is your pilot speaking.\" Why do women sneak a tampon up their sleeve when running to the bathroom? Why is there not a relable birth control for men? Why do women now work outside the home but continue to be the primary caretaker for children and handle most of the domestic duties?
\n\n
Tonight, as we read our four questions in the name of tradition, we will follow up with some other questions. Feel free to ask some of your own questions.
",

She elates us with her scholarship and knowledge of halacha (law). We praise her erudition and her thirst to learn, while we encourage her to join heart with head in seeking knowledge.
\n\n
Rebellious daughter: the rebellious daughter challenges us. She questions our traditions and authority. Rejecting the time-honored answers, she threatens us by standing outside our community. We fear losing her, yet admit that we have pushed her away. It is not enough to invite this daughter to hear our story; we need to hear hers.
\n\n
Simple Daughter: The simple daughter challenges us. For her, we relate the Passover story as a stirring tale. We share with her the enjoyment of the special foods, lingering patiently over the metaphors for freedom. We take joy in her soul’s understanding.
\n\n
Daughter Who Does Not Know How to Ask: The daughter who does not know how to ask challenges us. Ours is the precious task to light a spark in this daughter, to kindle within her a lifelong passion to know herself and her people.
\n\n
We have been each of these daughters, and they live within us now. All of these women are welcome at our Seder.
",
