"body": "
“Vehi Sheamda - and this is what kept our fathers and what keeps us surviving.” What is the “this” that we sing about on the seder night?
\n\n
Many rabbis come with their different opinions saying that the things that keep us surviving is the torah which we received on Har Sinai, others say it is the mitzvot, our great rabbis or even Shabbat.
\n\n
A nice idea I once heard says that the “this” that we sing about is in fact anti-Semitism. It says that anti-Semitism has kept the Jewish people surviving over hundreds of years. Our enemies can try and extinguish us. They might enslave us as Pharoah did, they might try and annihilate us physically as Hitler did, they might try and take away our Jewish identity as Stalin did, but they can never take away our hope and succeed to wipe us out completely.
\n\n
It is in times where anti-Semitism is the strongest where we can see that this meaning for Vehi Sheamda is most true. When our enemies try and knock us down, it gives us strength to stand up taller and fight back stronger than before. When anti-Semitism is highest we come together and it is because of this that the Jews continue to thrive today. In fact it is our enemies who kept our fathers and who keep us surviving.
\n",

"body": "
Matzah, this thin unleavened bread of affliction is baked with the bare necessities; flour, water and fire; allowed to stand for no more than 18 minutes, which is the time it takes for the process of fermentation to begin. Therefore, the only difference between bread and matzah is time. So surely in his absolute power, G-d could have provided bread for the Jewish people when He liberated them from slavery. Why did the Israelites flee from Egypt with this food of slaves?
\n\n\n\n
This bread of affliction has become the embodiment of humility, symbolizing the suffering of slavery experienced by Am Yisrael in Egypt. Humility is the foundation of spiritual growth. Only a person who can acknowledge their inadequacies and submit to a higher wisdom can free himself from his Yetzer Harah. When we eat matzah, we internalize the quality of modesty as the essence of faith. By not eating chametz, we rid ourselves of arrogance and selfishness. Chametz, on the other hand, represents vanity and conceit. It epitomizes the inclination to evil, the urge to sin, the influence of alien ideas, temptations and forces. It is the unsolicited voice that sways us to ignore the presence and power of evil, until it is too late.
\n\n\n\n
Symbolically, the Israelites had become leavened to the point where they had almost become chametz. It was the redeeming Hand of God which saved Israel and guaranteed it would remain \"matzah,\" the essence of humility.
\n\n\n",

"body": "As we sit here as free men and women, it is so easy for us to forget the hardships that our ancestors had to overcome for our freedom. The exodus from servile Egypt to liberated Israel is viewed as the most pivotal event in Jewish history. So why do we lean on Pesach?\n\n
It was the custom of ancient royalty to recline on the left for two reasons:
\n\n
a) Food is normally held in the right hand. Leaning toward the left leaves the right hand free.
\n\n
b) Leaning on the right is a choking hazard. It can prevent the epiglottis from covering the trachea, allowing food to enter and stop the flow of oxygen.
\n\n
So as we sit here in the Hebrew year of 5775 in Eretz Hakodesh as a free nation,we act in the same manner as that of Kings. We are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to dwell and rejoice in the holy land, a dream many Jewish Kings were unable to fulfil. Make the most of it you Melachim!!
\n",
