Kadesh - Is there a blessing for the Czar?
“Rabbi, is there a blessing for the Czar?”
In Jewish tradition, we have a blessing for almost everything we encounter. Kadesh means to sanctify. Tonight, we sanctify four cups of wine. A blessing for the Czar sets up a funny joke in Fiddler on the Roof, but there are truly so many blessings in our life. Even this year, wehn we are lacking the blessing of being all together in person, it is important to stop and express gratitude. Think to yourself: What do you want to dedicate this first cup of wine to? Pour the first cup of wine and say:
Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha’olam, borei p'ri hagafen.
Praised are you, Adonai, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has created the fruit of the vine.
