419 BCE: The high priest of Jerusalem responds to a query from Jews on the Nile island of Elephantine on how to properly observe Passover: "In the month of Nisan, let there be a Passover....Do not work on the 15th day and on the 21st day. Also, drink no intoxicants, and anything in which there is leaven."
