"body": "
Why is this night different from all other nights?
\n\n
At other Passover Seders we focus on our Jewish narrative of slavery, but on this night we use our narrative to begin to understand modern instances of injustice.
\n\n
Why are we focused on sexual injustice?
\n\n
Sexual Injustice is a topic that is pervasive in our society today, but not at the forefront of discussion in our community. We want to bring attention and awareness to the issues related to sexual injustice in order begin a process of change.
\n\n
Why is this year different?
\n\n
Media has begun to give more coverage to these issues, both in shedding light on sexual violence at universities and portraying positive transgender characters on popular programming. As of 2015, there is full marriage equality in over half of the American states. The University of Maryland, Office of Sexual Misconduct and Relationship Violence was founded one year ago in March 2014, and similar offices are becoming more prevalent on campuses throughout the United States. The University of Maryland also founded the LGBT Equity Center in 2010.There have been strides forward, but our work is not yet complete.
\n\n
Who does sexual injustice affect?
\n\n
1/4 of women on college campuses will experience sexual assault during their four years on campus. 10% of people identifying as LGBTQ experience sexual violence or harassment. 800,000 people are trafficked worldwide each year. But the impact of sexual injustice is not limited to those that experience it firsthand.
\n\n
Why is sexual injusticea taboo topic when it affects so many?
\n\n
Sexual Injustice has garnered more public attention, but is far from a topic that is completely openly discussed. Misinformation, ignorance, or aversion halt productive conversation and prevent us from moving forward. Tonight we take the first step in opening that conversation.
\n\n
***
\n\n
We acknowledge that “from generation to generation, each of us is obligated to see ourselves as though we personally had just been freed from slavery.” In each generation and each year, we retell the story of the exodus to our children and to our grandchildren, in order that they, too, will understand the pain of slavery and the value of freedom. In the spirit of the Seder, we focus on those in the grips of modern day slavery- in our modern experience, slavery is a life where communication and personal connections are restricted. Moving forward in the Seder we hope to discuss how to increase justice and freedom in our world.
\n",

"body": "
In the Seder three matzot are placed on a plate. During this step the middle matzah is broken and a piece taken and hidden for later. Why is the matzah broken now when it is not needed for later in the ceremony? Because a key to freedom is to anticipate the future and make it real. The challenge of adulthood is to train ourselves to look at the long-term consequences. Slavery is a life where only the immediate is important, there is no looking forward, there is no choice. On Passover, we realize that freedom takes commitment, planning and responsibility. What are your goals? What are you committed to?
\n\n
Matzah is called “lechem oni”—the bread of our affliction. In breaking the matzah in half, we remind ourselves that as long as anyone in the world is afflicted, none of us can be whole. The division of the matzah also reminds us of the forced division of communities and families due to disappearances, detentions and deportations of immigrants.
\n\n
Uncover the matzah and raise it for all to see.
\n\n
Now we will hide one half of this piece of matzah. At our freedom justice Seder this evening, the hidden piece of matzah, the Afikomen, represents the horror hidden from our view—those who do not have access to nutritious food, those who are unable to attain or maintain housing, the treatment of those detained and prevented from speaking with their families, friends or lawyers.
\n\n
The disappeared are doubly blocked from our sight, physically separated in jails and detention centers, but also wrapped in a blanket of fear of further disappearances and legal attacks, fears intended to silence their communities.
\n\n
Until these divided parts are made one again, our Seder cannot truly be ended. Until these families and communities are reunited, we have not yet achieved our freedom.
\n",

In a panic I got my clothes together. My heart sank into my stomach as I looked down at the blood-stained sheets. I was so frightened I didn’t know what to do. I was hurriedly “pushed” out the door by the guy who lived in the room. Not much was said.
\n\n\n\n
The Voice of the Real Me
\n\n
My dad was standing in the kitchen, fighting a laugh. My mom was crying. Like ugly crying. She slapped me in the way that only mothers can. The kind of slap that conveys love and somehow brings you in for a hug simultaneously. She kept repeating between sobs that I didn’t “look gay” and how people were so mean to gay people and she didn’t want people to be mean to her oldest daughter.
\n\n\n\n
The Voice of a Former Sex Slave
\n\n
In 1995, I fell in love with a military man, who persuaded me to move with him to an undisclosed remote area. There, I was raped and beat continually while handcuffed to a door of an abandoned house. Eventually, through circumstances, I made my escape, but not before he had confiscated my naturalization papers, driver’s license and social security card. With no proof of my identity, I could not acquire adequate shelter. I felt like an animal that has been cast into the street. My life became a scenario of sojourning from one homeless shelter to another.
\n\n\n\n
The Voice of an Ally
\n\n
The first step in advocating on behalf of others is to take a curious, humble, and open approach. An ally is open to learning new things and challenging their own assumptions. The lives of people we care about, our friends, family, and colleagues can be powerful catalysts for action. When we speak out against injustice because it’s the right thing to do, regardless if someone we know and care about is affected, we act on behalf of our core values. As allies, we are often insulated from the vulnerabilities that people face in the world. We must be willing to take a risk in becoming an ally on behalf of the values and people we care about.
\n",
