Waskow used on the third night of Passover, April 4, 1969, the first anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, in the basement of a Black church in Washington DC. About 800 people took part, half of them Jews, the rest Black and white Christians.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>“For if we were to end a single genocide but not stop the other wars that kill [people] as we sit here, it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>If we were to end those bloody wars but not disarm the nations of the weapons that could destroy all [humankind], it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>If we were to disarm the nations but not end the brutality with which the police attack black people in some countries, brown people in others; Moslems in some countries, Hindus in others; Baptists in some countries, athiests in others; Communists in some countries, conservatives in others, it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>If we were to make sure that no one starved but were not to free the daring poets from their jails, it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>If we were to free the poets from their jails but not to train the minds of the people so that they could not understand the poets, it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>If we educated all [people] to understand the free, creative poets but forbade them to explore their own inner ecstasies, it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>If we allowed all people to explore their inner ecstasies but would not allow them to love one another and share in community, it would not be sufficient;</p>\n\n<p>How much, then, are we bound to struggle, work, share, give thanks, plea, feel, organize, sit-in, speak out, hope, and <em>be</em> on behalf of humanity! As the Talmud tell us, we, like Moses, may not live to complete the task; but neither may we refrain from beginning.” <em> </em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>-The Freedom Seder, April 4th, 1969</em> </p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Seder often ends with the words:</p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LASHANAH HABA’AH B’YERUSHALAYIM</strong></p>\n\n<p><strong>NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM</strong></p>\n\n<p>Let us reflect on the meaning of these words for those who yearn for peace with hard-earned justice. We wish for next year in Jerusalem that is shared among peoples and religious communities whose histories are twisted together like an ancient vine.</p>\n\n<p>Today we say, next year in <em> this</em> Jerusalem.</p>\n\n<p>Wherever we live we find injustice, but there really is a better place, a promised land, that we as individuals and as a community can see and feel in our heads and hearts. P’howa means ‘transferring consciousness from one state to another.’ At the ‘moment’ of death, the skillful means of the “p’howa of three recognitions” allows us to direct our consciousness out of our body into the exalted state of Amitabha Buddha’s pure realm.</p>\n\n<p>This is something you can do for yourself, or for someone else:<br />\n<br />\nIt would be easier if I could sit next to you. Maybe you could imagine that I am sitting there, and even though you probably won't see me there (but you might!), you might easily feel me there. One of the fine things that happens as our body stops is that our capacities to perceive become finer and finer. So such unlikely things as a visit from a person far away are quite possible.<br />\n<br />\nSo I am there. Perhaps you are asleep. Or not. Or perhaps I am asleep (though not now). Still, I am there. And I am aware of you. Gently, and wishing you well. I bring with me a number of helpers. My main spiritual teachers, for example, and their teachers as well.<br />\n<br />\nSo here we are, wishing you well. We wish you well as the body as it stops. We wish you well as the aliveness that arose from that body and offered you many adventures of being. We also--and deeply --wish you well as presence. It may be you have not yet recognized yourself as presence. Myself, I think you have, but it is good to have company, the company of others who know themselves as presence and recognize you as presence.<br />\n<br />\nBodies stop. It's true, they do. But presence does not stop. Presence is continuous. It changes shape and flavor but as presence it is always there. You, however much you change, are there. So we are there as presence noticing you as presence and wishing you well. By and by, your presence may let our presence hold you gently. Sometimes this looks like radiance. Sometimes it feels like warmth. Sometimes it feels like love. Presence within presence.<br />\n<br />\nPresence within Presence, close in and everywhere at once.
