"body": "<p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Many times throughout history,<span> </span>the Jewish people have lived without freedom. The Haggadah tells the story of one of those times. It tells the story of how the Jewish people were freed from being slaves in Eqypt which is called the Exodus. By reading the words of the Haggadah and by eating special food, we perform the Mitzvah written in the Torah. “You shall tell the Passover story to your children in the days to come”.The word “Haggadah” means a retelling.The obligation to tell and retell the story of the exodus from slavery to one’s children is the core of the Seder ritual. Tonight, is a time for joy and relaxation as we celebrate the triumph of all people who have struggled for control over their own lives and fought and won over the forces of oppression.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>The special meal for Pesach is called the seder. The word seder means order. The order of the seder meal helps us tell the story in a step by step way. Tonight we eat Matzoh the “bread of affliction” to remind us of our past so that in our lives we will be neither slave nor Pharoah, but that we will recognize injustice and try to stop it. Tonight is a time to renew our courage and a chance to awaken to the present with fresh insight.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span><span> </span></span><span>In the Torah, one of the most important ideas is freedom. </span><span><span> </span></span><span>Freedom is not the right to do whatever you want but the opportunity to do what is right. A person who is free may choose to say yes when everyone else is saying no. Throughout the seder meal, we celebrate the journey to freedom and remember that none of us are free till all of us are free. Let us do what our ancestors have done for thousands of years. Let us remember the story of the Exodus from Eqypt, let us link ourselves with all who came before us.</span><span>Let us celebrate freedom.</span></span></p>",

We now break the middle matzah into two pieces. The host should wrap up the larger of the pieces and, at some point between now and the end of dinner, hide it. This piece is called the afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek. After dinner, the guests will have to hunt for the afikomen in order to wrap up the meal… and win a prize.</p>\n\n<p>We eat matzah in memory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. As slaves, they had faced many false starts before finally being let go. So when the word of their freedom came, they took whatever dough they had and ran with it before it had the chance to rise, leaving it looking something like matzah.</p>\n\n<p><span><span>.</span></span> </p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><span><span>( the uppermost of the three matzot is broken and distributed among the group. To ask questions is to signal our desire to grow and learn. By admitting what we do not know, we take the steps toward greater knowledge and learning. Our story must be shared each year.</span></span></strong></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Sarah and Abraham moved across the River Euphrates where Sarah, at age 90, gave birth to her child Isaac. Isaac married Rebecca who had twin sons, Jacob and Esau. Esau and his descendents lived on Mount Seir, and Jacob and his descendents lived in Canaan.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Jacob lived in Canaan, he had many children and all the things he needed to live comfortably. But the sons of Jacob were jealous of their brother Joseph because they felt he was favored by their father. So they sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>In Egypt, Joseph was imprisoned. He heard about a mysterious dream the Pharoah had, and offered to interpret it for him. The Pharoah was so taken with Joseph’s explanation that he freed him and made Joseph an official in his court. Later, Joseph helped prevent a famine in Egypt by arranging for the storage of food.</span></span></p><p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Meanwhile there was a famine in Canaan. Originally Jacob, who was called Israel, and his partner Leah and their children and grandchildren went from their homeland in Canaan to Egypt because there was no food to eat where they lived.<span> </span>They had heard that an official there had stored food in case of famine. When they arrived Joseph – the guy who was sold into slavery - recognized his family and he helped them get settled. They made their home in Egypt and the number of families grew. This is how the children of Israel came to be in Egypt. </span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>The children of Israel had a lot of good ideas about how to be good farmers, how to build things, how to take care of animals and how to make money. The Israelites believed that because they had so many good ideas that they were safe and secure in Egypt. Pharoah thought that the Children of Israel might join with his other enemies and try to overthrow him and his family as rulers of Egypt.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Because Pharoah was scared of the Hebrews, he decided to make things difficult for Hebrew mothers (all male, Hebrew babies were to be killed). He ordered the two head Hebrew midwives, Shifrah and Pu’ah, to cooperate with him. He commanded them to make life difficult for some of their own people – the Hebrew mothers. The midwives recognized that Pharoah was trying to use Israelites to hurt other Israelites. Instead of following Pharoahs orders, the midwives secretly took special care of the babies and mothers. If a woman did not have enough food, they went to the other Hebrews and arranged that there would be enough for both mother and child.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p>",

The child was quiet, and she decided to keep him hidden in the Nile river for three months to make sure he was safe. His sister, Miriam, often stood nearby watching over him. One day the Pharoah’s daughter, Thermutis, found the baby and pulled him from his hiding place. Knowing full well that this was a Hebrew baby, she wanted to save him so she decided to take him to the palace to raise him. Miriam spoke to Thermutis and they agreed that Jocheved could come along to feed and care for Moshe, thus keeping the baby and mother together.</span></span></p>",

In time, they began to realize that they might be strong enough to overthrow Pharoah or escape from Egypt. Slowly, slowly, they began to plan a massive escape: an exodus.</span></span><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Meanwhile, Moshe had grown to be a man. He often roamed around the places where the Hebrews were working. One day, he went out from the palace when he saw an overseer, a slave master, treat a Jewish slave in a cruel way. He made the overseer stop. Moshe knew that he would get in trouble if Pharoah or anybody in the palace found out that he had defended a Hebrew. He decided the only safe thing to do would be to escape to the desert. Moshe found a group to live with and after some time married Zipporah. He and Zipporah raised a family together and Moshe tried hard to forget about all the problems with the Egyptians and the Hebrews. The problem for Moshe was that he could not forget but he wasn’t sure what he could do. Then, one day while he was out tending his sheep, he saw fire coming from a bush. The strange thing was that the branches and leaves of the bush were not burning. Moshe decided that this bush was a symbol that he had to do something, anything, to help the Hebrews. That day he decided to help his people escape from slavery.</span></span></p>",

When Pharoah heard what Moshe had to say, his heart would soften and he would agree to free the Israelites but then Pharoah would re-consider when he remembered how many workers he would lose. </span></span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span><span>Soon the Hebrew slaves began to fight back, terrible plagues happened to the Egyptians. Pharoah watched as his world came crashing down around him. Frogs and locusts swarmed over the land, boils and lice covered the skin of the Egyptians. All the people of Egypt suffered because their rulers were stubborn and refused to see that Hebrews should live freely.</span></span></p>",

"body": "<p><span><span>Even with all of the plagues and the Hebrews fighting back, Pharaoah did not want to release the Jews from slavery. He would not admit defeat. Only after Pharoah’s first born son died, poisoned by a Jewish palace slave, did he decide he no longer could keep on fighting against the Hebrews – he told them to go.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The Jews gathered quickly and left the cities they had built for the Egyptian Pharaohs. The Pharoah, however, changed his mind again and ordered his army to recapture the Jews. The Jews had made it all the way to the shore of the Red Sea when they turned and saw the army approaching. Some Hebrews were scared and blamed Moshe and Miriam for getting them into this trouble. Others chose to take their chances and walk into the sea. Only then, when the first few Hebrews went into the water taking a chance on what would happen, did the waters divide so that they could ALL cross safely.</span></span></p><p><span><span>When they got to the Red Sea, they were afraid to step in, but finally one brave person named Nachshon put a foot in the water and the sea opened up and let the Israelites cross on dry land. When they got to the other side Miriam led the people in song and dance.</span></span></p><p><span> </span></p>",
