What we drink to tonight is our community fomenting change together, around this table and around the world. We all are engaged in struggle, personally, in this country, and internationally.</p>\n\n<p>We dedicate this first cup of wine to the workers around the world who have taken the streets, the buildings, the cities in protest of an economic system that oppresses us, starves us, keeps us unemployed and uninformed.</p>\n\n<p>Tonight we come together to recount the story of the Exodus, the first example in the Jewish tradition of workers taking a stand against their oppressors and walking out to create a new society to free them from oppression. However, this is a Reconstructionist Marxist haggadah, and rather than throwing out traditional texts like prayers, we reinterpret and revalue them to fit within our understanding of the world. As Marxists, this means fitting a God concept within dialectical and historical materialism, a project I've been engaged in for quite some time.</p>\n\n<p>The Hebrew word to pray, <em>lehitpalel</em>, is actually a reflexive verb meaning to think about oneself or reflect upon oneself. As a dialectical materialists I do not believe in a higher or greater power outside humanity and the material reality. What I do believe in, what I have felt and experienced over and over, is the power of human community and solidarity to enact change in our world. When we pray we give ourselves the opportunity to reflect on the positive things we have in our world and the negative things that we need to continue to fight against.</p>\n\n<p>We can connect with history and community through prayer, saying the words that have been said for thousands of years but which are given new meanings by each generation. We can say prayers and sing them, we can think them and feel them. We can act our prayer in our kindnesses and political activities. There is an opportunity in each thing that we do to open our eyes and expand our consciousness of all the human and natural processes going on around us. And with this awareness we can change the world.</p>\n\n<p>The Passover seder contains many powerful symbols and teachings about liberation, social and political change, and bringing together communities. At the end of the biblical book of Genesis, Joseph moves his family to Egypt, where he becomes the second-in-command to Pharaoh. The size of this growing population frightens the new Pharaoh, who enslaves the Israelites, lest they make war on Egypt. The Israelites of the Exodus story were not captured from foreign lands and maintained as possessions as the slaves of the 19th century, but were forced through economic and social necessity to work against their will, or face starvation and death.</p>\n\n<p>So too is the face of human trafficking today. An estimated 21 to 36 million people are enslaved around the world today, the majority working in labor-intensive industries like food production and brick making. While some slaves are captured or tricked into slavery through false contracts, others are given loans they are expected to work off, with interest accumulation that makes it impossible to leave. Slaves are profitable and plentiful workers, especially in places where the population growth outstrips the jobs available, such as in under-industrialized parts of the world.</p>\n\n<p>Without capitalism there would be no slavery. When the workers collectively own and control the means of production we can have full employment with fair compensation, and there will be no issues of uneven development. When confronting this history, how do we answer our children or our contacts when they ask us how to pursue justice in our time?</p>\n\n<p>WHAT DOES THE REVOLUTIONARY CHILD ASK?</p>\n\n<p>“The Torah tells me, ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue,’ but how can I pursue justice?”</p>\n\n<p>Empower him always to seek pathways to advocate for the vulnerable. As Proverbs teaches, “Speak up for the mute, for the rights of the unfortunate. Speak up, judge righteously, champion the poor and the needy.”</p>\n\n<p>Give him readings, invite him to protests and public speeches, and encourage him to learn and to build the revolutionary organization.</p>\n\n<p>WHAT DOES THE SKEPTICAL CHILD ASK?</p>\n\n<p>“How can I solve problems of such enormity?”</p>\n\n<p>Encourage her by explaining that she need not solve the problems, she must only do what she is capable of doing. As we read in Pirke Avot, “It is not your responsibility to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”</p>\n\n<p>Show her the long history of class struggle, the consistency of the working class rising up against the capitalist class and the few examples of success. Let her read about the Russian revolution and see the most backwards capitalist country in its time turn into the most progressive in just a few weeks of socialism. These examples are our guide.</p>\n\n<p>WHAT DOES THE INDIFFERENT CHILD SAY?</p>\n\n<p>“It’s not my responsibility.”</p>\n\n<p>Persuade him that responsibility cannot be shirked. As Abraham Joshua Heschel writes, “The opposite of good is not evil, the opposite of good is indifference. In a free society where terrible wrongs exist, some are guilty, but all are responsible.”</p>\n\n<p>Show how capitalism is destroying the earth so that none of us can live on it. Show how crisis affects people of all classes, not just the most oppressed. Finally, show how the failure to build leadership leads to confusion at best, and bloody reaction at worst.</p>\n\n<p>AND THE UNINFORMED CHILD WHO DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO ASK...</p>\n\n<p>Prompt her to see herself as an inheritor of our people’s legacy. But these are not all the symbols we can inquire about.</p>\n\n<p>1. On all other nights we each eat off our own plate. Why on this night do we have one communal seder plate?</p>\n\n<p>2. On all other nights we talk freely at the table. Why on this night do we have a discussion led by the haggadah?</p>\n\n<p>3. On all other nights we eat alone, or with immediate family. Why on this night do we eat with a community?</p>\n\n<p>4. On all other nights we tell stories from our day. Why on this night do we tell stories from an ancient, mythical past?</p>\n\n<p>And the answers:</p>\n\n<p>1. The seder plate: The original Seder had a definite Greco-Roman and Middle Eastern flavor, most notably a Greek style of dining with the participants actually reclining on low couches, pillows, or carpets around a central location. The various Seder items were placed on several low tables, which were carried in and out of the room at designated points in the ceremony and placed in front of the Seder leader. This practice is maintained today by many Yemenites and other Eastern Jews. A problem emerged in Europe, however, where during the early medieval period the practice developed to dine around a single large table while seated upright in chairs. At first, instead of bringing in and out the small tables, the various Seder items were merely arranged in a large wicker basket (around 1000 CE) and then later on a large platter, which could be moved at appropriate times. Eventually, craftsmen created a special plate (ke’arah) to hold the traditional foods. Whereas the original moveable tables contained all of the items to be consumed at the Seder, this was impractical for the relatively small Seder plate. Therefore, the custom developed among Sephardim and Ashkenazim (but not Mizrachim) of only putting a symbolic amount of food on the Seder plate and separately serving the bulk of it. In the 16th century, Italian Jews and Sephardim began making artistic Seder plates from brass, porcelain, and wood, a practice later adopted by Ashkenazim as well.</p>\n\n<p>2. Haggadah: The word Haggadah comes from the Torah command - \"And you shall tell ( <em><strong>v'Higadeta</strong></em> ) your children on that day...\" It is believed that the obligation to tell the story of the Exodus was observed by Jews' ancestors ever since the actual Exodus itself. The scriptural command (Exodus 13:8) to tell the story of the exodus to our children is interpreted as a positive commandment. The creation of the haggadah happened over hundreds of years, with different components of ritual and story telling added by different scholars. We use the haggadah as a guide to the stories of our past as well as revaluing the symbols and traditions of Passover to be relevant to us in our time. We don't believe in any supernatural or external power to ourselves, so the power of the seder is what it evokes in us, not gathering mitzvah points to be tabulated in the afterlife.</p>\n\n<p>3. Community: The Exodus from Egypt is the first experience of the Israelites as a distinct people from those around them. Interestingly, not only the \"pure\" Israelites, those descended from Joseph, came out of Egypt but an assorted group of people captured by war or imperial expansion who were inspired by the revolutionary fervor and decided to join in the revolt. The story of the exodus has been inspirational throughout the generations and for many more people than just the Jews! We want to invite as many people as possible to share in our vision of liberation so we can act collectively to bring about our freedom.</p>\n\n<p>4. Ancient past: We view the stories of the Torah not as literal truth or lived history, but as mythical stories that our ancestors created to explain their origins as a people. Still, these stories have incredibly powerful messages that Jews have studied and revalued throughout the centuries. In our lives we often talk about what is happening here and now, and we live with our heads in the present and future, but we rarely get a chance to suspend our thoughts in our current time and look far back into the past. By reading and discussing ancient mythic stories we can learn about the societies of our ancestors and their worldview, and we can also gain insight into the universalities of human experience that have carried through subsequent modes of production. The matzah is called the bread of affliction, representative of the meager food given to slaves. It also represents freedom, as the midrash about the exodus explains, the Israelites had to leave Egypt quickly once they were given permission, and in ancient times bread rose by collecting the naturally-occurring yeast in the air. However this took a very long time, so the Israelites simply took their dough without letting it rise and baked it in the hot Egyptian sun. The result was a flat, cracker-like bread, which is more or less the matzah we eat today.</p>\n\n<p>The modern matzah owes its shape and cheap price to the ingenuity of Behr Manischewitz, a Lithuanian Jew who immigrated to Cincinnati in 1886. It's unclear why he and his family immigrated, possibly because the Cincinnati Jewish community needed a ritual slaughterer (shochet) and Behr was known as a respected shochet to some Jews in the US. Many shochets were also matzah bakers, including Behr's father, and Behr capitalized on the growth of the American Jewish communities by opening a matzah factory.</p>\n\n<p>Matzah had previously been baked in synagogue bakeries or contracted by synagogues to outside bakeries under rabbinical supervision, but as the communities in the US didn't revolve around a small number of shuls as in the Old Country, many of the tasks that had been communal and located in the shuls, such as kosher meat and mikvahs, were brought out of the synagogues and became independent entities. Matzah baking took the same route, and in the middle of the 19th century independent matzah bakers started to appear.</p>\n\n<p>However, maintaining kashrus in a bakery separate from the synagogue proved difficult. Matzah baking is a difficult and precise process, where there can only be 18 minutes between water and flour contact and the baking of the matzah, and no contaminants can be present. Several rabbis, including Manischewitz, went into the matzah baking business to counter this trend.</p>\n\n<p>The biggest change in American matzah factories was the introduction of machines in the production process. There were many rabbinical debates over the halachic validity of using machines, a debate which continues to this day. The first machine was introduced to roll out the matzah, invented in 1838 by a French Jew named Isaac Singer. Manischewitz took the automation to the next level, using at least three different machines as part of the matzah making process: one that partially kneaded the dough, one that rolled it, and one that stretched the dough, perforated it, and cut it. Later he introduced a gas-fired matzah baking oven (which allowed for better and more even distribution and control of heat) and an enormously important (and patented) \"traveling-carrier bakeoven,\" a conveyor belt system that made it possible to automate the whole process of matzah baking: the dough was placed on one end and it slowly moved through the oven chambers emerging as evenly-baked identically shaped matzah on the other end.</p>\n\n<p>These machines produced square, uniformly tasting matzahs that could be easily boxed and shipped with minimal breakage. Handmade matzah was and still is basically round, easily breakable, and largely variant from box to box. Manischewitz matzahs are much cheaper than handmade matzahs because there is less congealed labor time in each square, and while the traditional authorities may balk at the idea of an automated process different from the time-tested traditions, the automation of matzah making is an example of how introduction of mechanized production can increase yield and decrease fatigue and difficulty for workers. Rolling and kneading are labor intensive processes done by hand and time is lost when the workers have to carefully clean their hands and surfaces to avoid contamination. Neither of these are an issue with machine matzahs. Break off two pieces of the bottom matzah, which together should be at least one ounce. Again, take at least one ounce of bitter herbs and dip them in the charoset. Place this between the two pieces of matzah and eat the sandwich while reclining.</strong></p>\n\n<p>In the days of the second temple in Jerusalem, Rabbi Hillel was a great teacher who would discuss the Passover story until the dawn of the next day. Once he was asked to teach the whole Torah while standing on one foot. Hillel said: “Do onto others as you would have them do unto you. That is the whole Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study.”</p>\n\n<p>During Passover, Hillel would eat a sandwich of the lamb offering plus matzah and maror, in order to perform the Law: “With unleavened bread and bitter herbs shall they eat it.” Since we no longer make sacrifices at the Temple, the tradition has changed to eating a Hillel sandwich of matzah, maror and charoset.</p>\n\n<p>Rabbi Levi reminds us that while the men toiled at making bricks without straw, the women never lost hope. They brought food and water to the fields, and encouraged the men to have sex with them, so as to bring the next generation into the world. R. Levi suggests that the sweetness of charoset is about the Jewish women’s way of relating to slavery and the slaves. True, the enslavement was bitter, both physically brutal and psychologically degrading, but the Jewish women didn’t lose hope. They helped maintain the dignity of their husbands, and raised a new generation of Jewish children.</p>\n\n<p>Rav Kook, the first chief rabbi of Israel, taught that the Hillel sandwich represents bringing together the symbolic messages of the matzah and the marror. The sages disputed the validity of such bundling together of mitzvahs, because they didn't want to make it seem like the mitzvot are a burden. But for Hillel, the bitterness of slavery embodied in the maror is combined with the freedom of matzah prepared as we left Egypt represents the \"yoke of heaven,\" where one commits doggedly as a slave to the service of God and thus uncovers an even greater spiritual freedom.</p>\n\n<p>For us, the contradiction of the slavery of maror and the freedom of matzah represents the transitional period we face after a revolution and before the establishment of socialism. We are weighed down by the consciousness of the oppressed hammered into us throughout our lives in capitalism, and we have to grapple with this just as we grapple with transforming a degenerate economic system into a prospering one. Just as the generation who left Egypt in the exodus could not go into the land of Israel, so too will the generation who carry out the revolution not be the ones to fully bring socialism into being. We will toil for its establishment with all our hearts and abilities, but we cannot undo the decades of internalized messages of unworthiness. Everyone should eat at least 1½ ounces of matzah, reclining, before midnight. After eating the afikoman, we do not eat or drink anything except for the two remaining cups of wine.</strong></p>\n\n<p>We read earlier in the seder about the afikomen and some of what it represents. Why do we save the afikomen for the end? We often say that socialism is international or it is nothing. We are obligated in the class struggle here in our own country, but that doesn't mean ignoring the class struggle that is carried out throughout the world. As Marx and Engels say in the Communist Manifesto, workers have no nation, and while the borders established by capitalism define political and economic challenges unique to each section of the proletariat, the system we are fighting is global and the capitalists are united internationally, so we must unite as well.</p>\n\n<p>We eat the afikomen at the end of our seder because we know that the revolution will not be complete until each of the pieces of the world proletariat are united in struggle. One is for Elijah, and the other for Miriam. Miriam's cup is filled with water, to remember the well that followed Miriam through the desert after crossing the Red Sea and keeping the Israelites from dying of thirst. Miriam represents the long history of women's contributions to Judaism and to the world that are often overshadowed or silenced in favor of the stories of men. There are many midrashic examples of women's leadership, from the women marching forward into the Red Sea to make the waters part to the women refusing to take part in the creation of the golden calf. These are stories that don't make it into the final editing of the Bible, but are added later as the rabbis felt them to be important.</p>\n\n<p>In our lives we seek to bring forward those stories of women's leadership: the International Women's Day strike that launched the Russian Revolution, the brilliance of Rosa Luxembourg and contributions of Nadezhda Krupskaya, and the many strikes led and carried out by women workers. Those are the stories not as often told, but as essential to our struggle against capitalism as the stories of male workers. We must put those stories on the table, open our Marxist agitation to women who often get marginalized in our ranks, and fight for the liberation of all people.</p>\n\n<p>We cannot have sexism and patriarchy without class society. We recognize all the things that God gave the Israelites throughout their exodus and journey in the desert, and respond with the phrase \"Dayenu - it would have sufficed us.\" But even without a supernatural God we can still sing Dayenu honestly.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Part 1: Appreciate what do you have</strong></p>\n\n<p>Dayenu is a song all about appreciating what we have and what we’ve been given. In this time of economic and social crisis it is easy to get lost in the great lists of things we don’t have, and the demands we are always fighting for, but we cannot just be pessimists and self-pittiers. Rather, we should take stock of what we do have and really appreciate those gifts.</p>\n\n<p>If I only had one cat instead of two, dayenu!<br />\nIf I had a house and not a car, dayenu!<br />\nIf I had a job but was not in school, dayenu!</p>\n\n<p><strong>Part 2: Fight for what we still need</strong></p>\n\n<p>The original text of the song goes through the story of the exodus and after each step says “danyenu,” it would have sufficed.</p>\n\n<p> <em>English Translation:</em> </p>\n\n<p>If He had brought us out of Egypt buthadn’t executed justice upon the Egyptians, dayenu<br />\nIf He had executed justice upon the Egyptians buthadn’t executed justice upon their gods, dayenu<br />\nIf He had executed justice upon their gods but hadn’t slain their first-born, dayenu</p>\n\n<p>As we move through the story, we start to realize that, as up-beat as the song is, we in fact would <em>not </em> have sufficed with only half the exodus. Particularly the middle five stanzas:</p>\n\n<p>6) If He had split the sea for us.<br />\n7) If He had led us through on dry land.<br />\n8) If He had drowned our oppressors.<br />\n9) If He had provided for our needs in the wilderness for 40 years.<br />\n10) If He had fed us manna.</p>\n\n<p>If God had split the sea but not led us through on dry land, we would have drowned. If God had led us through on dry land but not drowned our oppressors, they would have killed us. If God drowned our oppressors but not provided for our needs in the wilderness for 40 years, we would have starved, dyed of thirst, and/or gone insane.</p>\n\n<p>So why do we say “dayenu” after each line? Because I would argue we are not just saying it would have been enough in general, but it would have been enough for God godself to stop with half the miracle and we could have figured it out ourselves. If God had split the sea but not led us through on dry land, we’d figure out how to swim. If God led us through on dry land but not drowned our oppressors, we could have fought our way to freedom. If God had drowned our oppressors we could have scavenged for food. But without help we would lose members of our group to the tragedy.</p>\n\n<p>Dayenu is a call to collective action. If we join together to fight for one piece of liberation, say a living wage or free health care, but we don’t continue to fight until we are freed from the deepest roots of our chains, the capitalist system, then some people will be able to make it but some will not, and they will be lost to us. Workers from all backgrounds and walks of life fought and died for the Paris Commune, the Russian Civil War, the Spanish revolution, the Venezuelan revolution, the Haymarket Riot, and so many others. Some people see these sacrifices as revolutionary martyrdom and glorify the bloodshed. But we know socialism will not come on the backs of martyrs but through the struggle of the mass of workers living to build the new world.</p>\n\n<p>Most of the soldiers of the revolution did not join the barricades in order to give their lives for the revolution, but were willing to do so if the struggle failed. We remember their bravery, their hopes for success, their exuberance at victory, their optimism even in defeat. They fought to establish or keep working class control and to spread the inspiration of their struggle across the world. They fought even when the leadership failed them, even the heavy blows of counterrevolution gained the upper hand, even when the propaganda machines turned the world against them.</p>\n\n<p>Let their sacrifice inspire us to build our organization to greater heights and spread the future of socialism as far as possible. We the working class are the vast majority of people on earth, and we have the potential for bloodless revolution if we do not vacillate in our decisions. We are incredibly alienated from ourselves and the people around us by the daily grind of living under capitalism. We don't have time to enjoy ourselves from the constant work, obligations, and sheer exhaustion. One of the best things about socialism is when the point of production is to fulfill the needs of the people, and not for accumulation of capital, we can have more people working fewer hours each, giving more time for everyone to enjoy themselves and find fulfillment and self-actualization in their lives. The flourishing of art and culture in the Soviet Union, especially in the 1920s, is a testament to the possibilities opened by free time. Think of the music that can be created, the plays that can be written, the inventions that can be discovered, the sleep that we've all been lacking for most of our lives, if only we didn't have to work so much. Not to mention the impact of mental illness triggered and deepened by stress and worry.</p>\n\n<p>With this glass we commit to promoting the right to joy for every person, not just the tiny minority who don't have to work for a living.
