Throughout the pandemic, we counted our days in a different way—days of isolation, weeks of closure, months of uncertainty.</p>\n\n<p>We don’t yet know what the 49 days of the Omer will mean for us this year, as we hopefully continue moving toward one set endpoint, Shavuot, and pray for the eventual end of the pandemic.</p>\n\n<p>In Psalm 90:12, the psalmist asks God for help, recognizing that life is fragile, and searching for the meaning that comes from that awareness. Realizing that each day is precious and that our ultimate number of days is finite, can hopefully cause us to live a more purposeful life. Yet, if you think about what it is saying, it makes little sense. Would it really be enough if God had taken us out of Egypt but had not divided the sea for us? Wouldn’t the pursuing Egyptians have re-enslaved us? Or enabled us to reach Mount Sinai but hadn’t given us the Torah? What would have been the point?</p>\n\n<p>Dayenu is actually suggesting an important spiritual principle of enoughness. We live our lives with ambitions and hopes. Some are fulfilled. Some never happen. Some, with the passage of time, fade away or are lost. Even as we mourn the losses, we are to remember the blessings that we have. We need to look at our lives in perspective. It is true I am not as flexible as I once was, and that my hearing is declining. Yet it is also true that I can still see, and that I enjoy my grandchildren. The practice is to enjoy what I do have. I should place the reality of the decline that is part of aging in the larger context of my whole life. All of it is the reality of my life. Let me remember to see even as my eyes dim; to communicate even when it seems easier to sit alone in my room. I can smell and taste. I can touch and be touched. Neither the great moments nor the sad moments alone are the sum total of my life. In the context of What Matters, we think about what we would want for the last period of our life:</p>\n\n<p><strong>Dayenu</strong></p>\n\n<p>It would be enough to be surrounded by family and friends</p>\n\n<p>It would be enough to eat my favorite food</p>\n\n<p>It would be enough to be at home with the sun shining in my bedroom</p>\n\n<p>It would be enough to listen to my favorite music</p>\n\n<p>A follower of the Kotzker rebbe complained about not getting a tallit (a four-cornered prayer shawl) from his in-laws—a standard wedding present. The Kotzker replied: Then wrap yourself in the four corners of the world and pray!</p>\n\n<p>The story teaches that you can lack many things, but that doesn’t stop you from being able to feel embraced by the universe as you wrap yourself with it and with the precious memories of your life. We are obligated to transmit the story of our people from generation to generation, as well as to experience the journey from enslavement to freedom as if it had happened to each one of us. </p>\n\n<p>History has been a powerful teacher. Over the course of history, we have been repeatedly persecuted by the Amalek of each generation, and conversely, persecution has been followed by periods of freedom and expansion. This optimistic reading of our historical pattern gives us hope in the difficult times that we will be liberated and have freedom. Our commitment as Jews is to remember and transmit our story, and to obligate ourselves to be part of the process of liberation for all humanity. </p>\n\n<p>In addition to our reliving the physical exodus of our people, we commit to reflecting on our own internal chametz, for example, our addiction to social media, work, material objects, or Lashon Hara (gossip).  Our understanding of the personal nature of the work of Pesach, comes from the words of the Haggadah, that each person is obligated to relive the exodus for themselves- atzmo-etzem. The word etzem is a word that refers to our spiritual selves, our divine spark, or the essence of a human being.</p>\n\n<p>According to Me’or Eynayim, an 18th-century rabbinic Hassidic commentator, when our ancestors were slaves in Egypt, awareness itself went into exile. As our ancestors came through the Red Sea, they regained their awareness and agency. </p>\n\n<p>For most of us, the past two years of COVID have been a time out of time, set in an increasingly fraught and unstable world. The rupture in our lives has been enormous. The Passover seder is more than a history lesson, for each of us is instructed to see ourselves as if we had personally been freed from Egypt. It has to become our own story, told in the context of the generations of our family and community. We add new layers as this year’s experience melds with the memories of the past.</p>\n\n<p>Yet some years are painfully different. A beloved family member or friend has died during the past year. There is an empty chair at the seder table. We may find ourselves dreading the coming holiday. How can we go through the same rituals, when life has been so drastically altered? What if we begin to cry at the seder table? What if everyone is so afraid of pain that they ignore the empty chair? Are we even allowed to bring our sadness to the seder, which seems like it should be a happy occasion? Sometimes death changes family/ social relations and yours is also the empty chair at a seder. How do you find meaning in the holiday now?</p>\n\n<p>Using the traditional structure and rituals of the seder service, as found in the Haggadah, below are ways that enable you to pay attention to your journey of grief. Each represents one step of the seder with teachings, comments and questions relating that Jewish ritual or prayer to the individual experience of memory, loss and healing.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Karpas | כַּרְפַּס</strong><br />\nThe First Dipping Hors d’oeuvres of Spring Greens:  Salt water represents our tears as slaves in Egypt. In my bereavement, as time goes by, what are s the sources of my tears? What makes me cry? Is there anything that still enslaves me to my tears? The karpas, a spring vegetable, represents renewal that comes in the springtime. As I move from grief and mourning into a different yet potentially full and renewed life what is growing in me and what comes alive in me again?</p>\n\n<p><strong>Yachatz | יַחַץ</strong><br />\nBreaking the Matza:  This matza represents brokenness. As the matza is broken in half, the broken piece is set aside for the afikomen, which when found toward the end of the seder, symbolizes renewed wholeness and redemption. In my broken-heartedness, have there been paths of healing for me? In my brokenness, have I found places of greater strength within me? Can I imagine moving towards a new kind of wholeness?</p>\n\n<p><strong>Maggid | מַגִיד</strong><br />\nTelling the Story:  One of the central mitzvot of Pesach is telling the story of oppression and the journey to liberation. It is interesting to note that the Haggadah offers us at least four versions of the Passover story. There is telling through symbols, historical recounting, moral expositions, and facts with expanded interpretations. What are some of the different ways in which you tell the stories of your loved one and the journey you took together?</p>\n\n<p><strong>Rachtza | רַחְצָה</strong><br />\nWashing Before Eating Matza:  When we have been to a cemetery, it is customary to wash our hands before entering a building. It is a remnant of the Biblical idea that contact with the dead puts an individual into a different state. Purification by water is necessary prior to reentering the community. What rituals have been helpful to you in making the transition from focusing completely on your loved one and your loss, and being able to be more fully a part of your own changed life?</p>\n\n<p><strong>Birkat Hamazon – Barech | בָּרֵך</strong><br />\nThe Blessing after the Meal:  They who sow in tears, shall reap with joy. You have shed many tears since the death of your loved one. What are the blessings you received from your loved one which continue to nourish you?
