Professor Susannah Heschel explains that in the 1980s, feminists at Oberlin College placed a crust of bread on the Seder plate, saying, “There’s as much room for a lesbian in Judaism as there is for a crust of bread on the Seder plate.” Heschel adapted this practice, placing an orange on her family’s <em>seder</em> plate and asking each attendee to take a segment of the orange, make the blessing over fruit, and eat it as a gesture of solidarity with gay Jews and others who are marginalized within the Jewish community. They spit out the orange seeds, which were said to represent homophobia.</li>\n</ul>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li><strong>Potato: </strong><strong> </strong>In 1991, Israel launched <a href=\"http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/ejhist.html#operation2\">Operation Solomon</a>, a covert plan to bring Ethiopian Jews to the Holy Land. When these famished, downtrodden Jews arrived in Israel, many were so hungry and ill that they were unable to digest substantial food. Israeli doctors fed these new immigrants simple boiled potatoes and rice until their systems could take more food. To commemorate this at your <em>seder</em>, eat small red potatoes alongside the <em>karpas</em>. Announce to those present that this addition honors a wondrous exodus in our own time, from Ethiopia to Israel.</li>\n</ul>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li><strong>Fair Trade Chocolate or Cocoa Beans</strong>: The fair trade movement promotes economic partnerships based on equality, justice and sustainable environmental practices. We have a role in the process by making consumer choices that promote economic fairness for those who produce our products around the globe. Fair Trade certified chocolate and cocoa beans are grown under standards that prohibit the use of forced labor. The Hebrew word for this Holiday, \"Pesach\" has two meanings. The first is \"Passing over\" and refers to the fact that the angel of death passed over the Israelite's homes. Pesach can also refer to the pascal lamb -- which was ritually sacrificed to protect the Israelites from the angel of death and then became part of early celebrations of Passover. We tell the story of Passover using a \"Haggadah\" a special book which serves as the narrative for the seder, and means, \"Telling\" in Hebrew.</p>\n\n<p>Passover invites us to not only retell this story of freedom from slavery in the past, but to also consider the plight of those who are not free today and reminds us to be welcoming to those seeking freedom. Slavery can take many forms, including being treated outright as property, or being unjustly controlled through economics by those with more power. Many of us are descended from people who were once enslaved. Even with no personal experience of slavery, most beings seem to passionately want freedom. It matters that we take note of who and where others are not free, because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. This symbolizes the harshness of lives of the Jews in Egypt.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Charoset</em> </strong> – A delicious mix of sweet wine, apples, cinnamon and nuts that resembles the mortar used as bricks of the many buildings the Jewish slaves built in Egypt</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Karpas</em> </strong> – A green vegetable, usually parsley, is a reminder of the green sprouting up all around us during spring and is used to dip into the saltwater</p>\n\n<p> <em><strong>Zeroah</strong> </em> – A roasted beet or traditional shank bone (historically from the pascal lamb) is a reminder of tenth plague and symbolizes the sacrifice made at the great temple on Passover. By using a bee in place of a bone, we express our desire to more fully embrace the spirit of passover: i.e. we recognize the injustice of slavery,and don't want body parts of enslaved others on our table.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Beitzah</em> </strong> – An avocado pit evokes a sense of mourning for the destruction of the temple and replaces the traditional egg -- again so that we do not have products of slavery on our table.</p>\n\n<p><strong> <em>Orange</em> </strong> - The orange on the seder plate has come to symbolize full inclusion in modern day Judaism: not only for women, but also for people with disabilities, intermarried couples, and the LGBT Community.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Matzah</strong></p>\n\n<p>Matzah is the unleavened bread we eat to remember that when the jews fled Egypt, they didn’t even have time to let the dough rise for their bread. According to tradition, and most rabbis, to be kosher for passover, Matzah must be made from wheat, rye, barley, spelt or oats. Since growing numbers of people cannot safely eat these grains, we may choose to serve a home made, gluten free matzo, a more, \"inclusive option\" enabling those who can't eat gluten to fully participate in our seder.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Elijah’s Cup</strong></p>\n\n<p>A fifth cup of wine poured during the Seder is left untouched in honor of Elijah, who, according to tradition, will arrive one day as an unknown guest to herald the advent of the Messiah. At one point during the Seder dinner, the door is briefly opened to welcome Elijah. This commemorates the historical redemption from Egyptian bondage of the Jewish people and reminds us of our future redemption.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Miriam’s Cup</strong></p>\n\n<p>A cup is filled with water and placed next to Elijah’s cup. Miriam was the sister of Moses. After the exodus while wandering through the desert, legend says that a well of water followed Miriam. It was called ‘Miriam’s Well’. across,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and toasted whole-wheat bread</b></p>\n\n<p><b>with liver and ducks,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and crumpets and dumplings,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and bagels and lox,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and doughnuts with one hole</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and doughnuts with four,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and cake with six layers</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and windows and doors.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>Yes--</b></p>\n\n<p><b>on all other nights</b></p>\n\n<p><b>we eat all kinds of bread,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>but tonight of all nights</b></p>\n\n<p><b>we munch matzo instead.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>And on all other nights</b></p>\n\n<p><b>we devour</b></p>\n\n<p><b>vegetables, green things,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and bushes and flowers,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>lettuce that's leafy</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and candy-striped spinach,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>fresh silly celery</b></p>\n\n<p><b>(Have more when you're finished!)</b></p>\n\n<p><b>cabbage that's flown</b></p>\n\n<p><b>from the jungles of Glome</b></p>\n\n<p><b>by a polka-dot bird</b></p>\n\n<p><b>who can't find his way home,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>daisies and roses</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and inside-out grass</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and artichoke hearts</b></p>\n\n<p><b>that are simply first class!</b></p>\n\n<p><b>Sixty asparagus tips</b></p>\n\n<p><b>served in glasses</b></p>\n\n<p><b>with anchovy sauce</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and some sticky molasses--</b></p>\n\n<p><b>But on Passover night</b></p>\n\n<p><b>you would never consider</b></p>\n\n<p><b>eating an herb</b></p>\n\n<p><b>that wasn't all bitter.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>And on all other nights</b></p>\n\n<p><b>you would probably flip</b></p>\n\n<p><b>if anyone asked you</b></p>\n\n<p><b>how often you dip.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>On some days I only dip</b></p>\n\n<p><b>one Bup-Bup egg</b></p>\n\n<p><b>in a teaspoon of vinegar</b></p>\n\n<p><b>mixed with nutmeg,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>but sometimes we take</b></p>\n\n<p><b>more than ten thousand tails</b></p>\n\n<p><b>of the Yakkity-birds</b></p>\n\n<p><b>that are hunted in Wales,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and dip them in vats</b></p>\n\n<p><b>full of Mumbegum juice.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>Then we feed them to Harold,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>our six-legged moose.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>Or we don't dip at all!</b></p>\n\n<p><b>We don't ask your advice.</b></p>\n\n<p><b>So why on this night</b></p>\n\n<p><b>do we have to dip twice?</b></p>\n\n<p><b>And on all other nights</b></p>\n\n<p><b>we can sit as we please,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>on our heads, on our elbows,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>our backs or our knees,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>or hang by our toes</b></p>\n\n<p><b>from the tail of a Glump,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>or on top of a camel</b></p>\n\n<p><b>with one or two humps,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>with our foot on the table,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>our nose on the floor,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>with one ear in the window</b></p>\n\n<p><b>and one out the door,</b></p>\n\n<p><b>doing somersaults</b></p>\n\n<p><b>over the greasy k'nishes</b></p>\n\n<p><b>or dancing a
