"body": "<p>As we rejoice at our deliverance from slavery, we acknowledge that our freedom was hard-earned. We regret that our freedom came at the cost of the Egyptians’ suffering, for we are all human beings made in the image of God. When human beings suffer, even evil human beings, our joy cannot be complete. We host 7 events a month, some of them in our house in South East Portland. "body": "<p>In celebration of Passover, we are commanded to hold or attend a Seder and retell the story of our liberation from Egypt. During our Seder, meaning order, we will follow the order of the rituals required to properly tell the story. Instead of just reading the story from the Torah (first five books of the Bible/cornerstone of Jewish text) we use a combination of symbolic food and ask questions.</p>\n\n<p>The Exodus story is one of redemption from slavery. We are retell this story to remember that we too were slaves and once strangers in a different land. It is said that as we tell the story, we also embody the feeling of being slaves and move towards liberation as we move through our Seder. It is for this reason, that many people relate the Passover story to modern forms of slavery. Passover invites us to not only retell this story of freedom from slavery in the past, but to also consider the plight of those who are not free today and reminds us to be welcoming to those seeking freedom. Slavery can take many forms, including being treated outright as property, or being unjustly controlled through economics by those with more power. Many of us are descended from people who were once enslaved. Even with no personal experience of slavery, most beings seem to passionately want freedom. It matters that we take note of who and where others are not free, because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Let's remember those who are not currently free.</p>\n\n<p>As we go through our Seder tonight, you will see some additions to the traditional text that speak more to this idea of social justice.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>The Passover seder is used to tell the story of our Exodus. The main way that we do that is through the use of symbolic food on the seder plate.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Maror</em> – The bitter herb. This symbolizes the harshness of the lives of the Jews in Egypt.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Charoset</em> – A delicious mix of sweet wine, apples, cinnamon and nuts that resembles the mortar used as bricks of the many buildings the Jewish slaves built in Egypt.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Karpas</em> – A green vegetable, usually parsley, is a reminder of the green sprouting up all around us during spring and is used to dip into the saltwater.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Zeroah</em> <em> </em> – A roasted lamb or shank bone symbolizing the sacrifice made at the great temple on Passover (The Paschal Lamb).</p>\n\n<p> <em>Beitzah</em> – The egg symbolizes a different holiday offering that was brought to the temple. Since eggs are the first item offered to a mourner after a funeral, some say it also evokes a sense of mourning for the destruction of the temple. Others see the egg as a sign of rebirth and spring.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Orange</em> – This is a newer addition to the seder plate. There are multiple stories recounting why we add the orange, but all contain a Rabbi telling a woman that \"a woman belongs on the bimah [in a leadership position in the congregation, or reading from the Torah] as much as an orange belongs on the seder plate.\" While the symbol of the orange started as a symbol for inclusion of women, it has also come to symbolize inclusion of people with disabilities, intermarried couples, and the LGBTQ Community.</p>\n\n<p>Bananana - Tonight we place a banana on our seder table and tell the story of Aylan and Galip two boys caught up in the Syrian Refugee Crisis. In the summer of 2015, the world was awakened and shattered by the images of a little boy whose body lay lifeless amidst the gentle surf of a Turkish beach. His name was Aylan Kurdi (age 3), he drowned along with his older brother, Galip (age 5), and their mother, Rihan, on their own exodus to freedom’s distant shore. Aylan and Galip’s father, Abdullah, survived the harrowing journey – though how does a parent survive the death of their children? In teaching the world about his sons, he shared that they both loved bananas, a luxury in their native war-torn Syria. Every day after work, Abdullah, like mothers and fathers everywhere, would bring home a banana for his sons to share, a sweet little treat, a sign of his enduring love for them.</p>\n\n<p>May children everywhere, who are caught up in this modern day exodus, be guarded and protected along their journey to safety, shielded by the love of their parents, watched over by G-d full of mercy and compassion.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Originally from Rabbi Dan Moskovitz, Temple Sholom Vancouver, British Columbia</em> <br />\nFor more information on the refugee crisis, please visit <a href=\"http://rac.org/refugees\">rac.org/refugees</a>.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Matzah</strong></p>\n\n<p>Matzah is the unleavened bread we eat to remember that when the Jews fled Egypt, they didn’t even have time to let the dough rise on their bread. We commemorate this by removing all bread and bread products from our home during Passover.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Elijah’s Cup</strong></p>\n\n<p>The fifth ceremonial cup of wine poured during the Seder. It is left untouched in honor of Elijah, who, according to tradition, will arrive one day as an unknown guest to herald the advent of the Messiah. During the Seder dinner, biblical verses are read while the door is briefly opened to welcome Elijah. In this way the Seder dinner not only commemorates the historical redemption from Egyptian bondage of the Jewish people but also calls to mind their future redemption when Elijah and the Messiah shall appear.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Miriam’s Cup</strong></p>\n\n<p>Another relatively new Passover tradition is that of Miriam’s cup. The cup is filled with water and placed next to Elijah’s cup. Miriam was the sister of Moses and a prophetess in her own right. After the exodus when the Israelites are wandering through the desert, just as G-d gave them Manna to eat, legend says that a well of water followed Miriam and it was called ‘Miriam’s Well’. The tradition of Miriam’s cup is meant to honor Miriam’s role in the story of the Jewish people and the spirit of all women, who nurture their families just as Miriam helped sustain the Israelites.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>There are two points during the Seder when we wash our hands. This first washing, Urchatz, is a symbolic and ritual washing, done by one person and with no blessing. The second washing, Rachtzah, is a washing used to prepare all of us for the meal and is said with a blessing.</p>\n\n<p>As we wash our hands for the first time this evening, we remember that we have the freedom to access resources that many do not.</p>\n\n<p>The first hand-washing of the Seder is unusual. The rabbis point out that even a child would wonder at least two things: why do we wash without a blessing and why do we bother to wash when we will not be eating our meal for some time. They suggest that we wash our hands here in order to raise questions. Questions, both of wonder and of despair, are crucial to our time at the Seder and, really, our growth as human beings. We have permission to ask questions, even of God, when we see and experience suffering.</p>\n\n<p>Now one person will symbolically wash their hands for all of us seated here.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>There are three pieces of matzah stacked on the table. We now break the middle matzah into two pieces. The host should wrap up the larger of the pieces and, at some point between now and the end of dinner, hide it. This piece is called the afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek. After dinner, the guests will have to hunt for the afikomen in order to wrap up the meal.</p>\n\n<p>We eat matzah in memory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. As slaves, they had faced many false starts before finally being let go. So when the word of their freedom came, they took whatever dough they had and ran with it before it had the chance to rise, leaving it looking something like matzah.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Uncover and hold up the three pieces of matzah and everyone say together:</em> </p>\n\n<p><strong>All Participants</strong>: “This is the bread of affliction which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat; let all who are needy come and celebrate the Passover with us. Now we are here; next year may we be in the Land of Israel. Now we are slaves; next year may we be free.”</p>\n\n<p>\"We break the matzah as we broke the chains of slavery, and as we break chains which bind us today. We will no more be fooled by movements which free only some of us, in which our so - called “freedom” rests upon the enslavement or embitterment of others.\"</p>\n",

Elie Weisel writes: \"G-d created man because He loves stories. We each have a story to tell — a story of enslavement, struggle, liberation. "body": "<p>Our story starts in ancient times, with Abraham, the first person to stop worshiping idols and worship Adonai (or G-d). Abraham entered into a covenant with G-d which inspired him to leave his family and begin a new people in Canaan. G-d had made a promise to Abraham that his family would become a great nation, but this promise came with a frightening vision of the troubles along the way: “Your descendants will dwell for a time in a land that is not their own, and they will be enslaved and afflicted for four hundred years; however, I will punish the nation that enslaved them, and afterwards they shall leave with great wealth.\"</p>\n\n<p>Many years later, Abraham’s grandson, Jacob moved his family to Egypt. Once there our numbers grew, and soon the family of Jacob became the People of Israel. Pharaoh and the leaders of Egypt grew alarmed by this great nation growing within their borders, so they enslaved us. We were forced to perform hard labor, perhaps even building pyramids. The Egyptians feared that even as slaves, the Israelites might grow strong and rebel. So Pharaoh decreed that Israelite baby boys should be drowned, to prevent the Israelites from overthrowing those who had enslaved them.</p>\n\n<p>One couple, Jochebed and Amram sent teir baby son Moses in a basket down the Nile River with his sister Miriam watching the basket containing her brother. The basket floated to where the daughter of Pharaoh was. She kept the child, called him her own and raised him in the palace. One day Moses was walking through the fields where the Israelite men were working and he saw an Egyptian servant whip an Israelite man. Moses struck the Egyptian and killed him. Then Moses ran out to the desert. There he found a burning bush that was not consumed by the fire. G-d spoke through the bush to Moses. G-d told Moses to go tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.</p>\n\n<p>So Moses listened to G-d and he returned to Egypt and demanded that Pharaoh release the Israelites from bondage. Pharaoh refused! As a result G-d sent ten plagues upon Egypt. At the time of each plague, Pharaoh promised to free the Jewish slaves, but then he refused again when the plagues subsided.</p>\n",

It was this last plague that finally made Pharaoh decide to free the children of Israel from slavery.</p>\n\n<p>All of Israel packed up their belongings and left Egypt. Again Pharaoh changed his mind and went after the Israelites. G-d sent a barricade of smoke and fire that blocked the Egyptians from gaining on Moses and his people. Then Moses parted the Red Sea and allowed the Israelites to pass through to the other side. The blockade retreated when the Jews were safely through the sea. Pharaoh and his men went after the crossing people and were drowned by the closing of the water. The Israelites were then freed from being enslaved in Egypt.</p>\n",

The great sage Hillel would put the meat in a sandwich made of matzah, along with some of the bitter herbs. While we do not make sacrifices any more – and, in fact, some Jews have a custom of purposely avoiding lamb during the Seder so that it is not mistaken as a sacrifice – we honor this custom by eating a sandwich of the remaining matzah and bitter herbs. Some people will also include charoset in the sandwich to remind us that God’s kindness helped relieve the bitterness of slavery.</p>\n\n<p>Eat a sandwich of matzah, maror, and charoset.</p>\n",

The tradition that the youngest person asks the questions reflects the centrality of involving everyone in the seder. The rabbis who created the set format for the seder gave us the Four Questions to help break the ice in case no one had their own questions. Asking questions is a core tradition in Jewish life. The four questions will now be said in Hebrew by the youngest resident. We will then read all of the questions out loud together in English.</p>\n\n<p><strong>מַה נִּשְׁתַּנָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מִכָּל הַלֵּילות</strong></p>\n\n<p>Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol haleilot?</p>\n\n<p>Why is this night different from all other nights?</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכלין חָמֵץ וּמַצָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלּוֹ מצה</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin chameitz u-matzah. According to Jewish tradition, the Prophet Elijah was a brave man who denounced the slavery of his day. Legend teaches that he will return one day to lead everyone to peace and freedom. It was customary during the Passover Seder to open the door of the house for Elijah, in the hope that the age of universal peace may soon be at hand.</p>\n\n<p>We, too, open the door to peace, knowing that Elijah's task is really our own. Only when we have made a world where nation shall not lift up sword against nation, where justice is universal, and where each person is free, will the age-old dream of peace be real. Let us bring peace and justice to the world!</p>\n\n<p><strong>Let us now open the door and sing together.</strong></p>\n\n<p>אֵלִיָּֽהוּ הַנָּבִיא, אֵלִיָּֽהוּ הַתִּשְׁבִּי,</p>\n\n<p>אֵלִיָּֽהוּ, אֵלִיָּֽהוּ,אֵלִיָּֽהוּ הַגִּלְעָדִי.</p>\n\n<p>בִּמְהֵרָה בְיָמֵֽנוּ יָבוֹא אֵלֵֽינוּ</p>\n\n<p>עִם מָשִֽׁיחַ בֶּן דָּוִד,</p>\n\n<p>עִם מָשִֽׁיחַ בֶּן דָּוִד.</p>\n\n<p>Eliyahu hanavi Eliyahu hatishbi Eliyahu, Eliyahu, Eliyahu hagiladi Bimheirah b’yameinu, yavo eileinu Im mashiach ben-David, Im mashiach ben-David</p>\n\n<p>Elijah the prophet, the returning, the man of Gilad: return to us speedily, in our days with the messiah, son of David.</p>\n\n<p>Miriam's Cup</p>\n\n<p>A Miriam’s Cup is a new ritual object that is placed on the Seder table beside the Cup of Elijah. Miriam’s Cup is filled with water. It serves as a symbol of Miriam’s Well, which was the source of water for the Israelites in the desert. Putting a Miriam’s Cup on your table is a way of making your Seder more inclusive.</p>\n\n<p>It is also a way of drawing attention to the importance of Miriam and the other women of the Exodus story, women who have sometimes been overlooked but about whom our tradition says, \"If it wasn’t for the righteousness of women of that generation we would not have been redeemed from Egypt\" (Babylonian Talmud, <a href=\"http://www.sefaria.org/Sotah.9b?lang=he-en\">Sotah 9b</a>).</p>\n\n<p>There are many legends about Miriam’s well. It is said to have been a magical source of water that followed the Israelites for 40 years because of the merit of Miriam. The waters of this well were said to be healing and sustaining. Thus Miriam’s Cup is a symbol of all that sustains us through our own journeys, while Elijah’s Cup is a symbol of a future Messianic time.</p>\n\n<p><strong>All say out loud together.</strong></p>\n\n<p>This is the Cup of Miriam, the cup of living waters. Let us remember the Exodus from Egypt. These are the living waters, God’s gift to Miriam, which gave new life to Israel as we struggled with ourselves in the wilderness. Blessed are You God, Who brings us from the narrows into the wilderness, sustains us with endless possibilities, and enables us to reach a new place.\"</p>\n\n<p>With this ritual of Miriam’s cup of water, we honor all Jewish women. We commit ourselves to transforming all of our cultures into loving, welcoming spaces for people of all genders.</p>\n\n<p> <em>We will end our Seder with a fourth cup of wine, which we bless now:</em> </p>\n\n<p>Fourth Glass of Wine</p>\n\n<p>As we come to the end of the Seder, we drink one more glass of wine. "body": "<p>Jewish holidays celebrate important historical moments, and also many are associated with the seasons of nature. In addition to celebrating our going out of Egypt, Passover marks the beginning of the barley harvest. On the second day of Passover, an omer, a sheaf of barley, was brought to the Temple as an offering. Shavuot, which comes 49 days later, commemorates the giving of the Torah, and also marks the beginning of the wheat harvest. At the second Seder, it is traditional to start counting off these 49 days, referred to the Days of the Omer.</p>\n\n<p>This symbolic \"countdown\" from Pesach to Shavuot shows the connection between the two holidays. Our freedom from slavery was not complete until we received the Torah, which gives our lives purpose and meaning.</p>\n\n<p>We count the omer with a blessing.</p>\n\n<p> <em>We recite:</em> </p>\n\n<p>Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha'Olam asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tizivanu al sefirat ha'omer.</p>\n\n<p>Blessed are you, Adonai our G-d, Sovereign of the Universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to count the omer.</p>\n\n<p>Hayom yom echad la'omer</p>\n\n<p>Today is the first day of the omer.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>In celebration of Passover, we are commanded to hold or attend a Seder and retell the story of our liberation from Egypt. During our Seder, meaning order, we will follow the order of the rituals required to properly tell the story. Instead of just reading the story from the Torah (first five books of the Bible/cornerstone of Jewish text) we use a combination of symbolic food and asking questions.</p>\n\n<p>The Exodus story is one of redemption from slavery. We retell this story to remember that we too were slaves and once strangers in a different land. It is said that as we tell the story, we also embody the feeling of being slaves and move towards liberation as we move through our Seder. It is for this reason, that many people relate the Passover story to modern forms of slavery. Passover invites us to not only retell this story of freedom from slavery in the past, but to also consider the plight of those who are not free today and reminds us to be welcoming to those seeking freedom. Slavery can take many forms, including being treated outright as property, or being unjustly controlled through economics by those with more power. Many of us are descended from people who were once enslaved. Even with no personal experience of slavery, most beings seem to passionately want freedom. It matters that we take note of who and where others are not free, because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Let's remember those who are not currently free.</p>\n\n<p>As we retell the story of our own slavery and liberation, we cannot help but draw to mind the 65 million displaced people and refugees around the world today fleeing violence and persecution, searching for protection. Like our ancestors, today’s refugees experience displacement, uncertainty, lack of resources, and the complete disruption of their lives. As we go through our Seder tonight, you will see some additions to the traditional text that speak more to this idea of social justice and modern day refugees who are seeking freedom.</p>\n",
