They were building on traditions created by feminist chavurah groups earlier that decade. This year we add a citrus fruit to our seder plate to honor our LGBTQ history and to taste our liberation.</em> </p>\n\n<hr />\n<p>Torah teaches that we went forth from <i>Mitzrayim</i>/Egypt as a “mixed multitude,” or <i>erev rav./p&gt; </i></p>\n\n<p>As we sit here at our table, we picture Jews and allies around the world sitting at their seder tables.</p>\n\n<p>We hold in our hearts the LGBTQ Jews who are out and proud among our families and allies, and also those who are sitting at the table while in the closet.</p>\n\n<p>We hold in our hearts the LGBTQ Jews who are not at a seder tonight or any night because they have been rejected and hurt by their Jewish communities. And we hold in our hearts every LGBTQ person who is living under threat in our country and around the world.</p>\n\n<p>We picture every one of us here at this table liberated and free. We imagine a world where LGBTQ people belong everywhere.</p>\n\n<p><i>[Sit quietly for a minute to imagine. According to one popular interpretation, these four cups allude to the story in which the Divine speaks to Moses and promises to redeem the Hebrew people from enslavement (<a href=\"https://www.sefaria.org/Exodus.6.6-7?lang=he-en&amp;utm_source=keshetonline.org&amp;utm_medium=sefaria_linker\">Exodus 6:6-7</a>). This Divine promise contains four verbs used to describe the act of liberation: וְהוֹצֵאתִ֣י,  <em>I will take you out</em>, וְהִצַּלְתִּ֥י,  <em>I will rescue you</em>, וְגָאַלְתִּ֤י,  <em>I will redeem you</em>, and וְלָקַחְתִּ֨י <em>, I will bring you.</em> </p>\n\n<p>The liberatory process of the Exodus was both active and ongoing, requiring not one but four modes of action by the Divine. All the more so in our time, as we take responsibility for the work of liberation, we are reminded that this process requires ongoing action on multiple levels. Both oppression and liberation function in four modes: the Ideological, the Institutional, the Interpersonal, and the Internalized. These four modes are interwoven and reinforce one another; when we engage with all four modes, our work can be most powerful.</p>\n\n<p>As we navigate through the four cups, we will use each one as a dual invitation: an opportunity to reflect on one way oppression shows up in the world as well as on one way we can bring about liberation.</p>\n\n<p>Each reflection may be recited before or after the blessing over the wine or juice. Alternatively, the reflections may be recited when each cup is filled.</p>\n\n\n\n<hr />\n<h3><img src=\"https://www.keshetonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/2.png\" alt=\"2.png\" />First Cup: Ideological</h3>\n\n<p> <em>Ideological</em>  oppression happens due to systemic beliefs that some groups of people are superior or more deserving. For too long, certain traditional Jewish texts have been used to justify harm, exclusion, or erasure. While many Jewish communities no longer uphold these interpretations, the impact of generations of ideological oppression continues to reverberate through our communities, our political systems, and the social structures and dynamics that shape our daily experiences.</p>\n\n<p><strong>We meet</strong> ideological oppression with ideological affirmation. We believe, concretely and actively, that LGBTQ+ individuals embody the Divine, and deserve dignity, safety, love, and celebration. <strong>We commit</strong> to expressing this belief in our actions. This year, we will build towards a world that is not only free of anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry but that also actively celebrates and honors LGBTQ+ lives.</p>\n\n<hr />\n<h3><img src=\"https://www.keshetonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/4.png\" alt=\"4.png\" />Second Cup: Institutional</h3>\n\n<p> <em>Institutional</em>  oppression happens when systems, policies, or simply the “way things are done” have a disproportionate impact on specific groups of people, reinforcing inequality. Sometimes these systems are hard to detect because they thrive on the assumption that they are “simply the way things are.” Institutional oppression is a large part of why the LGBTQ+ community, especially LGBTQ+ People of Color or those who have other multiply-marginalized identities, experience severe disparities in access to housing, employment, medical care, communal resources, and so much more.</p>\n\n<p><strong>We meet</strong> institutional oppression with institutional change. <strong>We commit</strong> to examining the institutions we are a part of and asking ourselves, “Who is served by this way of doing things? Who is served less? Who is not served at all?”</p>\n\n<p>More concretely, we will actively seek to identify and remove barriers to access for LGBTQ+ people, bringing an awareness of the many ways that assumptions about gender and sexual orientation are embedded in the structures of our institutions. Together, we will build institutions that embody justice, access, and full participation and leadership of LGBTQ+ people.</p>\n\n\n\n<hr />\n<h3><img src=\"https://www.keshetonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/3.png\" alt=\"3.png\" />Third Cup: Interpersonal</h3>\n\n<p> <em>Interpersonal </em> oppression is oppression that shows up in interactions between people, whether those be instances of individual discrimination, mistreatment, or expressions of implicit bias. Interpersonal oppression does real harm to individuals and has far-reaching consequences for our communities and institutions.</p>\n\n<p><strong>We meet</strong> interpersonal oppression with allyship and self-advocacy. Whether or not we ourselves are LGBTQ+, we have the power to respond to, intervene in, and create cultures in which interpersonal respect and decency are the norm. <strong>We commit</strong> to learning and practicing concrete tools for intervention in the moment, as well as personally modeling and reinforcing cultures of respect and dignity for LGBTQ+ people.</p>\n\n\n\n<hr />\n<h3><img src=\"https://www.keshetonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/1.png\" alt=\"1.png\" />Fourth Cup: Internalized</h3>\n\n<p> <em>Internalized </em> oppression happens when negative messages about a group of people are so dominant and constant that they become internalized. In a time in which negative stereotypes about LGBTQ+ people pervade politics, entertainment, and the media, we all encounter these messages on a daily basis. LGBTQ+ people may internalize these messages by feeling less-than, hyper vigilant, reinforcing or fleeing from stereotypes, and using mental and emotional energy to secure their own safety. Cisgender and straight people also may internalize these messages by subconsciously reinforcing stereotypes or negative beliefs about LGBTQ+ people.</p>\n\n<p><strong>We meet</strong> internalized oppression with love and liberation. <strong>We commit</strong> to a process of unlearning stereotypes and biases, building systems of accountability and mutual care, and celebrating our LGBTQ+ selves and our LGBTQ+ loved ones. It is a challenging text. And yet, it is only through radically embracing wrath that we can understand ourselves and each other.  </p>\n\n<p>As queer and trans Jewish youth of color, our relationship with rage is… complicated. For many of us, our belonging in Jewish spaces is contingent upon our ability to be “respectable,” making it difficult to express anger without facing racialized responses. Even within our own communities, cultural pushes for assimilation can make anger seem like a deterrent to our community’s greater good. </p>\n\n<p>Despite its unwelcome presence in many of our communities, we know that wrath pushes us toward liberatory action. It is vital for our communities to acknowledge and make space for it. </p>\n\n<p>Rage is a tool for liberation. Below are reflections and discussion questions to  integrate  into your Passover Seder. We hope that these provide an opportunity to reflect on contemporary persecution and imagine a better world. </p>\n\n<hr />\n<p><b>Recite and discuss the questions below. Then, read the answers from Queer and Trans Jewish Youth of Color (QTJYOC) while discussing your own.</b></p>\n\n<ol>\n\t<li>\n\t<p><b>What fills you with rage, and what does it feel like as it moves through your body?</b></p>\n\t</li>\n</ol>\n\n<p>microaggressions / ableism / racism / having to constantly justify my presence in spaces / my identities not being believed / racism in Jewish spaces / anti-trans legislation / not feeling belonging in the communities i belong to. </p>\n\n<p>Rage sometimes feels scary / difficult / frightening / exciting / good to release</p>\n\n<hr />\n<ol>\n\t<li>\n\t<p><b>What does your rage teach you?</b></p>\n\t</li>\n</ol>\n\n<p>If I want to honor any of my feelings, I must honor them all. My rage reminds me that I am complex, and I have to honor that complexity. / My rage reminds me of my convictions and shows what truly matters to me. / My rage moves me to think deeper about myself, to analyze and look at why I feel the way I do.</p>\n\n<hr />\n<ol>\n\t<li>\n\t<p><b>What is Jewish about rage?</b></p>\n\t</li>\n</ol>\n\n<p>So much of our history and practice is about questioning and learning. In order to question and learn, we have to look at what enrages us / From a historical standpoint, Jewish people have a long history of being vulnerable, and it only makes sense that our history and our liberation have a strong relationship with rage. / It’s very Jewish to allow yourself to feel and to question what exists. / So much of my relationship with Judaism is related to my belief in justice, and I view rage as a vital part of  reckoning with the world we want to build.</p>\n\n<hr />\n<ol>\n\t<li>\n\t<p><b>How can you transform your rage?</b></p>\n\t</li>\n</ol>\n\n<p>When I feel myself fill with rage, I first take some time to rest and take care of myself. That way, I can emerge from my rage feeling better equipped to be honest and take action. / When I feel rage, my first step is to get out of it. I want to embrace the space between rage and neutrality as a chance to both identify what I believe in and act with the balance necessary to treating others with compassion. / My rage is a tool for imagining, an opportunity to fight for myself without the self-consciousness I usually feel.</p>\n\n<hr />\n<ol>\n\t<li>\n\t<p><b>What do you want for the future of QTJYOC? (for those who are not QTJYOC - what do you want for the future of your communities and the intersections between them?)</b></p>\n\t</li>\n</ol>\n\n<p> I want people to know that we exist.
