"body": "<p>We are about to retell a story we have told and heard many times before. Yet we look forward to the Sedeer ritual with anticipation and delight whether we are eight years old or eighty eight.</p>\n\n<p>The Torah says: </p>\n\n<p>\"Zachor at hayom hazeh asher y'tzahtem meemitzrayim mebate avadim key b'shosek yad hotzee Adonai atchem meezeh. </p>\n\n<p>\"Remember the day on which you went forth from Egypt, from the house of bondage, and how the Eternal freed you with a mighty hand.\"</p>\n\n<p>In fulfilling this commandment we truly feel that we stand in the place of our ancestors, amazed - but still wary- of a God of Deliverance, and willing to endure severe hardship for a taste of freedom.</p>\n\n<p>And that is why, among all the festivals, we seek the companionship of our parents and children, our brothers and sisters -- all who are close and dear to us -- on this holiday of Passover. It is also why we invite others to share our table tonight. We are linked by blood and history in the experience of the Jewish people and the universal quest for freedom.</p>\n\n<p>We follow a Seder, literally an \"order\" for presenting the Haggadah, which means \"that which is said\". And while we sometimes modify the words, we nevere change the message.</p>",

"body": "<p>Now I break the middle matzah and conceal the larger portion as the <em>afikoman.</em> <i>Afikoman is the greek word for dessert and </i>we cannot complete our seder with dessert unless I can later put the full middle matza back together again. Matzah is one of the core symbols of Passover. It is unleavened bread, bread that did not have time to rise when our forebearers rushed to escape from Egypt. Over the centuries Jews have invited each other and all peoples to share in this bread when they recite this ancient Arameic prayer:</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">This is the bread of affliction, the poor bread,</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">which our fathers and mothers ate in the land of Egypt.</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Let all who are hungry come and eat.</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Let all who are in want share the hope of Passover.</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">As we celebrate here, we join with our people everywhere.</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">This year we celebrate here; next year in the land of Israel.</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">Now we are still slaves; next year may we all be free.</p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">(insert Hebrew Ha lachma)</p>\n\n",

"body": "<p>After Yachatz:</p>\n\n<p>This yearning for freedom is universal. Each of us is a slave -- a slave to our work, a slave to our prejudices, a slave to old grudges. And each of us can aspire to our own Israel, a time and place where we can be freed from the habits and patterns that bind and blind our lives.</p>\n\n<p>Decades ago we thought that a handshake on the White House lawn held out the prospect that the old pattern of conflict would be replaced by a new era of reconciliation in the land of Israel. It was not to be.</p>\n\n<p>We conatinue to search for a glimmer of hope for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. It will not be easy because each step in the journey toward peace will require a leap of faith by both communities. Each step will require a willingness --not to forget the past, but to move beyond it.</p>\n\n<p>Freedom and peace will come only when the bonds of hatred and retaliation are torn away, one strap at a time. Now we are slaves to the past. Next year may we be free to live in peace.</p>",

This year many proud Jews are hesitant to proclaim this.</p>\n\n<p>As we read about the proposed changes in Israeli law, and the intensification of calls to annex the territory across the Jordan River, the question arises: Is this the Jerusalem, is this the Israel, that we yearn for?</p>\n\n<p>So this year let us think of Jerusalem as more than a place. Let us think of Jerusalem as an idea and an ideal. And let us remain in solidarity with those in Israel today who are fighting to preserve that ideal.</p>",
