The first point was gained, and, as the Paymaster had lately visited the Regiment, he had left us plenty of greenbacks. Our next business was to find some suitable person to proceed to Cincinnati, Ohio, to buy us מצות [Matzos] Our sutler being a co-religionist and going home to that city, readily undertook to send them.<br />\n<br />\nWe were anxiously awaiting to receive our  <em>matzos</em>  and about the middle of the morning of ערב פסח [Eve of Passover] a supply train arrived in camp, and to our delight seven barrels of  <em>Matzos</em>. On opening them, we were surprised and pleased to find that our thoughtful sutler had enclosed two  <em>Hagedahs</em>  and prayer-books. We were now able to keep the seder nights, if we could only obtain the other requisites for that occasion. We held a consultation and decided to send parties to forage in the country while a party stayed to build a log hut for the services.<br />\n<br />\nAbout the middle of the afternoon the foragers arrived, having been quite successful. We obtained two kegs of cider, a lamb, several chickens and some eggs. Horseradish or parsley we could not obtain, but in lieu we found a weed, whose bitterness, I apprehend, exceeded anything our forefathers \"enjoyed\". We were still in a great quandary; we were like the man who drew the elephant in the lottery. We had the lamb, but did not know what part was to represent it at the table; but Yankee ingenuity prevailed, and it was decided to cook the whole and put it on the table, then we could dine off it, and be sure we had the right part. The necessaries for the  <em>choroutzes</em>  we could not obtain, so we got a brick which, rather hard to digest, reminded us, by looking at it, for what purpose it was intended.</p>\n\n<p>At dark we had all prepared, and were ready to commence the service. There being no חזן present, I was selected to read the services, which I commenced by asking the blessing of the Almighty on the food before us, and to preserve our lives from danger. The ceremonies were passing off very nicely, until we arrived at the part where the bitter herb was to be taken. We all had a large portion of the herb ready to eat at the moment I said the blessing; each eat his portion, when horrors! what a scene ensued in our little congregation, it is impossible for my pen to describe. The herb was very bitter and very fiery like Cayenne pepper, and excited our thirst to such a degree, that we forgot the law authorizing us to drink only four cups, and the consequence was we drank up all the cider.<br />\n<br />\nThose that drank the more freely became excited, and one thought he was Moses, another Aaron, and one had the audacity to call himself Pharaoh. The consequence was a skirmish, with nobody hurt, only Moses, Aaron and Pharaoh, had to be carried to the camp, and there left in the arms of Morpheus. This slight incident did not take away our appetite, and, after doing justice to our lamb, chickens and eggs, we resumed the second portion of the service without anything occurring worthy of note.</p>\n\n<p>There, in the wild woods of West Virginia, away from home and friends, we consecrated and offered up to the ever-loving G-d of Israel our prayers and sacrifice. And that’s without delving into the women of the  <em>midrash!</em> </p>\n\n<p>“The choices made by women in the course of their domestic lives determine the destiny of the entire people,” she writes. “Acting in their routine roles as midwives, mothers, daughters, and wives, women become the saviors of early Israel.”</p>\n\n<p>Many  <em>seders</em>  give a nod to the women of the Exodus by adding a Miriam’s cup, after the  <em>midrashic </em> legend of Miriam’s traveling well. But Frymer-Kensky’s work inspired me to include another set of biblical heroines in my  <em>seder</em> .  </p>\n\n<p>In our rush to get to the birth of Moses, we often skip over the story of the midwives, whom Pharaoh orders to commit infanticide while assisting at the deliveries of Hebrew women. Fearing God, the midwives refuse, perhaps the first recorded act of civil disobedience. When asked to explain their actions, the midwives lie to Pharaoh, telling him the Hebrew women are “animals,” giving birth too quickly for them to fulfill their mission.</p>\n\n<p>When called upon by those in power to harm the powerless, the midwives follow their own conscience, sowing seeds of redemption. What better story to tell as we gather around our  <em>seder</em>  table?</p>\n\n<p>Here is a ritual I created to celebrate the Hebrew midwives at my  <em>seder:</em> </p>\n\n<p><strong>Passover Ritual for the Midwives</strong></p>\n\n<p> <em>Fill a mug with strong tea or coffee. </em>  </p>\n\n<p>Moses is not the hero of our story. And Miriam is not the heroine. God is the Hero(ine) of our story.</p>\n\n<p>The Bible records: “The Eternal freed us from Egypt with a mighty hand.” (Deuteronomy 6:21).</p>\n\n<p>The  <em>haggadah </em> adds: “ ‘And the Eternal brought us forth from Egypt’… not by a messenger, but by Godself.”</p>\n\n<p>We see God in the river flowing with blood, in the parting of waters, in the lightning at Sinai. We also see God in the courage of Moses, in the loyalty of Aaron, and the joyful dance of Miriam. We see God in the frustration of Amram, the resourcefulness of Yocheved, and in Bat-Paroh’s unconditional love for a stranger’s child. We see God in people who say “no” to tyranny. We see God in people who say “yes” to life.</p>\n\n<p>Rabbi Akiva explains: “As the reward for the righteous women who lived in that generation were the Israelites delivered from Egypt” (Babylonian Talmud Sotah 11b).</p>\n\n<p>The story of our Exodus begins with the defiant act of the midwives to the Hebrew women. Shifra and Puah transformed a situation in which death was mandated into one in which life was held sacred. In a place where Hebrews were treated like animals, Shifra and Puah cared for them as human beings worthy of the chance to live.</p>\n\n<p>Tonight, in celebration of the midwives’ courage and defiance, we place a cup of strong tea or coffee on our Seder table.            </p>\n\n<p>Eleanor Roosevelt said, “A woman is like a tea bag—you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” </p>\n\n<p>Many foods change when plunged into hot water: vegetables soften; eggs harden. Tea, however, changes the water that surrounds it.</p>\n\n<p>In the end, we had no choice but to flee from Egypt. But Shifra and Puah strove to make the world better from where they stood, crouched next to the birthstool. They did some cultural borrowing in crafting the Haggadah, using the Greco-Roman concept of a symposium as a blueprint and filling in that structure with Jewish content. A symposium was a seder meal with guests during which an important subject would be discussed and explored, and a specific number of cups of wine would be served. The hosts would issue invitations for the Passover dinner, which would state the topic for the evening’s discussion and the number of cups of wine that would be served. (The more potent the wine that a particular host served, the more he or she would be admired in community gossip). At the beginning of the evening, guests would get comfortable prior to the seder meal – reclining on pillows and cushions and preparing to eat and drink, talk and argue deep into the night.
