Ohhh, if you can’t take it
\nDon't grab a gun, but grab a pen and write
\nIM AN ARAB like Mahmud Darwish did
\nI’ll never kill the others just to live
\nMy heart is screaming, we are human beings
\nMy head is held high, in the name of Palestine
\nMy hand will never abandon my abandoned brothers
\nTheir hopes will cross my heart, near the Handala
\n(Wait, wait, wait, if you don’t understand
\nWhat I'm saying, go and ask your parents)
\nAnd if no one has the answers, study it alone
\nSo you can answer your kids
\n",

"body": "
We inmates who strictly observed Passover, got three matzot a day this meant still more starvation than usual. On this eve of the first Seder, we were assembled in our room, occupied by five persons. As chairs were not available, people were sitting on the floor, perhaps twenty or thirty men and women. The seder plate consisted of a carrot, a little bit of not eatable green, a bone, and salt water; tears you could have enough there. The rabbi, my late husband, celebrated the seder, reading the haggadah, and a chasen [cantor] from Prague with a wonderful voice (the Czech Jews were especially gifted in art and music) changed the well-known songs. It belonged to the satanic tricks of the Nazis, that on Jewish holidays they invented special cruel punishments. So all of a sudden, the lights went out and we were surrounded by complete darkness. But the rabbi went on saying the haggadah by heart, as good as he could, and the chasen went on singing the beautiful songs, [in] Hebrew Yiddish…till the sun rose at the horizon. Never “L’shanah ha-ba’ah b’Yerushalayim” [Hebrew for next year in Jerusalem] has been said with more fervor, never the dream of independence and freedom for our people thought of in more hope. Living in bondage and slavery and danger like forefathers in Egypt, these Jews held…up their spirit, their faith in the help of Almighty. I do not how few of them survived and lived to see the redemption and the rebirth of our people. But and grandchildren and their child must know this story, that they may be proud of the heroism of their ancestors and be proud to be a Jew.
\n\n
This account of Passover seder in Theresienstadt was written by Klara Caro, an active member of the Jewish feminist movement in Germany before the Nazis came to power. She was also the wife of Rabbi Isidor Caro of Cologne. The Nazis deported the Caros to Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia in 1942…..She wrote these words to teach us about the event of the time, to memorialize the victims, and to show hope in the midst of hell…. Her story illustrates what Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi meant when he wrote about Passover: “Here the memory of the nation is annually renews and replenished, and the collective hope sustained.
\n",

"body": "
Stories of Freedom from Around the World - AJWS
\n\n
HAITI
\n\n
When Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti in October of 2016, the ferocious wind and waves took everything Françoise Inocent had. She lost her home and all her belongings, but did not despair. Françoise began to help others, volunteering with Solidarite Fanm Aysisyèn (SOFA), a local women’s empowerment group. Working tirelessly, she helped rebuild homes, organize a mobile clinic to tend to dozens of wounded and sick, and distribute hygiene kits to prevent cholera. Today, Françoise is beginning to recover from her own loss—and she keeps serving as a beacon of hope to others.
\n\n
BURMA
\n\n
Khun Khit San is a member of the Shan ethnic group—a minority in Burma. His people have faced persecution because of their ethnic heritage and identity, suffering years of violent attacks by the military. Although Burma has taken steps toward freedom and democracy in recent years, the army continues to persecute minorities like the Shan, Kachin, Karen, Ta’ang and Rohingya—by torturing civilians and displacing people from their homes. Khit San is just 27, but he has already dedicated his life to stopping this violence. In 2010, he co-founded Kaung Rwai Social Action Network (KSAN), which now works in 25 villages mobilizing youth to become activists, community leaders and human rights educators. They have garnered national media attention for their cause and are inspiring a new generation to fight for justice, equality and peace.
\n\n
GUATEMALA
\n\n
Covering their faces with scarves to maintain their anonymity, 15 Guatemalan women courageously testified in 2016 before a war crimes tribunal about their harrowing experiences of abuse at the hands of soldiers during Guatemala’s 36-year civil war. They faced intimidation and threats for telling their stories, but persevered, saying: “We are telling the truth. We want to be heard. And we want justice.” Ultimately, they got the justice they sought. In an unprecedented victory, the two military officials were sentenced to a total of 360 years in prison.
\n\n
INDIA
\n\n
Sunita Jaiswal was 15 when she first got married and 17 when she gave birth to her first child. Her husband drank heavily and beat her. Her parents encouraged her to be patient—and she had no choice because she couldn’t support herself alone. But she soon found a way to change her story. She discovered Azad Foundation, an AJWS grantee that trains low-income women to become professional drivers. Azad taught her to drive and gave her lessons in self-defense and human rights. With their support, she filed for divorce and reported her husband to the police.
\n\n
Today Sunita works as a private chauffeur and is able to support herself and keep her children and younger siblings in school. She also made a new friend—whom she later chose, of her own will, to marry. Her new husband supports her career fully. “This is what I liked the most about him,” Sunita says. “There are very few people who actually support us and help us go forward in life.”
\n\n\n",

"body": "
We have now told the story of Passover…but wait! We’re not quite done. There are still some symbols on our seder plate we haven’t talked about yet. Rabban Gamliel would say that whoever didn’t explain the shank bone, matzah, and marror (or bitter herbs) hasn’t done Passover justice.
\n\n
\n\n
Rabban Gamlieil hayah omeir: kol shelo amar sh’loshah d’varim eilu bapesach, lo yatza y’dei chovato, v’eilu hein: Pesach, Matzah, Umaror.
\n\n
Point to the shank bone.
\n\n
\n\n
Pesach shehayu avoteinu och’lim, bizman shebeit hamikdash hayah kayam, al shum mah? They ate the Pesah because the holy one, Blessed be He “passed over” the houses of our ancestors in Egypt, as it is written in the Torah: “And You shall say, ‘It is the Passover offering for Adonai, who passed over the houses of the Israelites saving us in Mitzrayim but struck the houses of the Egyptians.
\n\n
Point to the matza.
\n\n
\n\n
Matzah zeh sheanu och’lim, al shum mah? There was insufficient time for the dough of our ancestors to rise when the holy one, Blessed be He was revealed to us and redeemed us, as it is written in the Torah: “And they baked the dough which they brought forth out o Egypt into matzah – cakes of unleavened bread – which had not risen, for having been driven out of Egypt they could not tarry, and they had made no provisions for themselves.”
\n\n
Point to the maror.
\n\n
\n\n
Maror zeh sheanu och’lim, al shum mah? For the reason that the Egyptians embitter the lives of our ancestors in Mitzrayim, as the Torah states: “And they embittered their lives with servitude, with mortar and bricks without straw, with every form of slavery in the field and with great torment.”
\n\n
\n\n
B’chol dor vador chayav adam lirot et atzmo k’ilu hu yatza mimitzrayim, shene’emar: v’higadta l’vincha bayom hahu leimor, ba’avur zeh asah Adonai li b’tzeiti mimitzrayim. You brought us from human servitude to freedom, from sorrow to joy, for a time of mourning to a festive day, from deep darkness to great light and from slavery to redemption! And yet I must. For the sake of my children and theirs, not yet born. I cannot build their future on the hatreds of the past, nor can I teach them to love God more by loving people less…The duty I owe my ancestors who died because of their faith is to build a world in which people no longer die because of their faith. I honour the past not be repeating it but by learning from it…by refusing to add pain to pain, grief to grief. That is why we must answer hatred with love, violence with peace, resentment with generosity of spirit and conflict with reconciliation. This is faith.”
\n\n
The Dignity of Difference, p. 190
\n\n\n\n
Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend. Martin Luther King Jr.
\n",
