And if not now, when? - Hillel, Pirkei Avot 1:14.</p>\n\n<p>Group: And if not with others, how? - Adrienne Rich, Blood, Bread, and Poetry.</p>\n\n<p>Reader: The Passover festival of freedom developed from an even more ancient holiday: a celebration of the spring harvest.Spring is a time of rebirth. The snow of winter has melted. Once again the bare trees have begun to bud. Already the flowers have started to bloom, filling the air with their scent, and our hearts with their life.</p>\n\n<p>The fresh greens of spring serve a special purpose at this time in our Seder. As we dip these vegetables, the karpas, into salt water, a symbol of the tears of slavery, we remember all those who still suffer under the yoke of oppression. May we open our eyes, our hearts, and our hands, and help to remove suffering and want from our world.</p>\n\n<p>(Each person takes some greens and dips them in salt water) Before we eat it, we recite a short blessing:</p>\n\n<p><strong>בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה</strong></p>\n\n<p>Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruits of the earth.</p>\n\n<p>Prem on his work with child slavery in Pakistan</p>\n",

"body": "<p>(Darren) The MaNishtana traditionally asks us, “What is unique or different about tonight?” and, “Why do we eat Matzah, why do we dip and eat Bitter Herbs not just once, but twice and why do we recline?” These elements are symbolic themes that mirror the reflection our ancestor’s liberation from slavery, the hardships they experienced and theoppression that infringed on their freedoms. Tonight we incorporate a fifth question and answer. “What is unique or different about tonight’s seder, why tonight do we have Pride?” Pride is a very symbolic word in the LGBT community. We use this word often and tonight we have the opportunity to demonstrate how proud we are of our sexual orientation and gender identity.</p>\n\n<p><strong>The fifth question:</strong></p>\n\n<p> <em>Sheh-beh-chol ha-lei-lot sed-er a-nu o-seem sed-er ma-sar-ti. Ha-lai-lah ha-zeh, ku-la-nu ga-im?</em> <br />\nOn all other Seder nights we do a traditional Seder. Why, on this night, do we have Pride?</p>\n\n<p><strong>The Five Answers</strong></p>\n\n<p>Speaker 5: And all of us together here, add meaning to an age old Jewish tradition and for that we have pride. As a global community we have come far, and while we are not done with our struggle, we should reflect proudly on our accomplishments as we celebrate here tonight. (Darren story/reflection)</p>\n",

We regret that our freedom came at the cost of the Egyptians’ suffering, for we are all human beings made in the image of God. After you have poured the water over your hands, recite this short blessing.</p>\n\n<p><strong>בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו, וְצִוָּנוּ עַל נְטִילַת יָדָֽיִם</strong></p>\n\n<p>Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al n’tilat yadayim.</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who made us holy through obligations, commanding us to wash our hands.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>As long as we live in this world, freedom remains elusive: While moving forward, we are free. Stop, and we are bound and fettered again. That is why freedom is something you cannot buy nor steal. Never can you put freedom in your purse and say, “Freedom is mine forever!”</p>\n\n<p>For freedom is a marriage: Freedom is the bond our finite selves with the Infinite, the power to transcend the world while working inside it. It is a marriage of heaven and earth, spirit and matter, soul and body. And like any marriage, it is kept alive only by constant renewal. Like the miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea, suspended in its state of paradox by a continuous, other-worldy force.</p>\n\n<p>Yet, in our exodus, we were granted eternal freedom. Not because we were released from slavery. But because we were given the power to perpetually transcend.</p>\n\n<p>That’s the order of the Seder tonight: <em>Kadesh/Urchatz</em>, Transcend and Purify. Over and over. Rise higher, then draw that into deeds. Rise higher again, then draw that down even more. Never stop rising higher. Never stop applying.</p>\n\n<p>Akhil and bridging talent gaps in the non-profit sector.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>Sarah: As we remember this struggle, we honor the midwives who were the first Jews to resist the Pharaoh. our legends tell us that Pharaoh, behaving in a way common to oppressors, tried to get Jews to collaborate in murdering their own people. He summoned the two chief midwives, Shifra and Pu'ah, and commanded them to kill newborn Jewish males at birth. He threatened the midwives with death by fire if they failed to follow his commands.</p>\n\n<p>But the midwives did not follow orders. Instead of murdering the infants, they took special care of them and their mothers. When Pharaoh asked them to account for all the living children, they made up the excuse that Jewish women gave birth too fast to summon midwives in time.</p>\n\n<p>The midwives' acts of civil disobedience were the first stirrings of resistance among the Jewish slaves. The actions of the midwives gave the people courage both to withstand their oppression and to envision how to overcome it. It became the forerunner of the later resistance. Thus Shifra and Pu'ah were not only midwives to the children they delivered, but also to the entire Jewish nation, in its deliverance from slavery. *Sarah and thoughts on women's empowerment and motherhood</p>\n",

"body": "<p>(Meredith) </p>\n\n<p>Kharoset-- Why do we eat kharoset? Apples, nuts, cinnamon, and wine are combined to make this sweet condiment. It is the color of clay or mortar. It reminds us of the bricks and mortar that the Israelites are said to have made when they built the Pharaohs' palaces and cities. At the same time, the taste of kharoset is sweet, and it reminds us of the sweetness of freedom. </p>\n\n<p>Batysah--Why do we eat baytsah? Baytsah is the egg of life. Each of us begins as an egg and grows to adulthood. The egg reminds us of our evolutionary past and the gifts of human inheritance. But the egg is fragile. It represents potential that can be destroyed. Left alone, its life would perish.</p>\n\n<p>Reader 4: Growing life needs warmth and love and security, guidance, hope, and vision. To achieve their full potential, human beings need the support and encouragement of family and community. Baytsah symbolizes the fragility and interdependence of life.</p>\n",
