choose.</span></strong></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We all observe Pesech in similar ways</span></p><p><span>Passing on lessons to the children we raise.</span></p><p><span>We say the prayers repeating each phrase</span></p><p><span>Year after year we keep singing God’s praise</span></p><p><span>We begin with the candles, lighting the blaze</span></p><p><span>And end with a pot roast we carefully Braise</span></p><p><span>In a manner that doesn’t remove all its taste</span></p><p><span>With a service run, quickly but never a race.</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We build the Pyramids all 200 layers</span></p><p><span>For Pharaohs sons and all his heirs</span></p><p><span>It was awfully hard work and not very fair</span></p><p><span>When we complained they just didn’t predisposed</span></p><p><span>To suffering but lets just propose</span></p><p><span>It was hard as could be when they made their choice</span></p><p><span>Tonight we remember and hear their do it because, we have found</span></p><p><span>It keeps our feet upon the ground</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>One thing we know from History</span></p><p><span>Jews often lived on the periphery</span></p><p><span>As societies developed we thrived and grew</span></p><p><span>Jews became famous albeit a few</span></p><p><span>(Inordinately in the public’s view)</span></p><p><span>Merchants selling dyes and Glue</span></p><p><span>Officers dressed in Prussian blue</span></p><p><span>Jazz musicians playing the Blues</span></p><p><span>Newspapermen reported the news</span></p><p><span>When enemies rose through election or coup</span></p><p><span>Our ancestors knew to say adieu</span></p><p><span>And sailed across the ocean blue</span></p><p><span>To start their lives in a country new</span></p><p><span>We are here because they left</span></p><p><span>A land of hardship pain and death</span></p><p><span>Hearts beating loudly inside their chest</span></p><p><span>Escaping oppression unlawful arrest</span></p><p><span>Welcoming a new life as they traveled west</span></p><p><span>Facing the future with vigor and zest</span></p><p><span>Passing each obstacle challenge and test</span></p><p><span>Valuing freedom over what they possessed</span></p><p><span>Opinions they had could be freely expressed</span></p><p><span>We began as a people who were oppressed</span></p><p><span>Still we refused to </span><span>acquiesce,</span></p><p><span>And worship their gods or later confess</span></p><p><span>To Priests of the church in Poland or France</span></p><p><span>Or follow the mystics lost in a trance</span></p><p><span>There were those who chose to stay behind</span></p><p><span>The millions to whom we are no longer entwined</span></p><p><span>Those who, became disenchanted</span></p><p><span>And chose to follow Buddah, Jesus, Mohammed</span></p><p><span>The question we ask is why are we Jews?</span></p><p><span>Through out the Hagadda there will be lots of clues</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We are Jews because we choose</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We live in the cold and also hot weather</span></p><p><span>Some Jews pray wrapped up in leather</span></p><p><span>What is our link ? Really what is our tether?</span></p><p><span>What is it that makes us all come together?</span></p><p><span>We can come from here or there</span></p><p><span>Black and brown and golden hair</span></p><p><span>Jews eat Latkes, cheese and soup</span></p><p><span>Vegetables, noodles, every food group</span></p><p><span>Tuna fish, sometimes Bonita</span></p><p><span>Every bread from rye to pita</span></p><p><span>Peas and beans and pears and yams</span></p><p><span>Chicken, beef and sometimes lamb</span></p><p><span>Spices hot and sweet and savory</span></p><p><span>But it’s our memory of bondage pain and slavery</span></p><p><span>So it isn’t because of what we cook</span></p><p><span>It has nothing to do with how we look</span></p><p><span>Is the answer in a book?</span></p><p><span>Lets say it again its not really news</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We are Jews because we choose.</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>Our ancestors were smart and chose to run</span></p><p><span>From Pharaoh’s whip and Russian gun</span></p><p><span>But chose to stand in many cases</span></p><p><span>And fought their battles in important places</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>Great Grandfathers fought in Normandy</span></p><p><span>On Battleships in the Coral Sea</span></p><p><span>As a gunner on a Boeing Bomber 29 B</span></p><p><span>Their fathers also fought in France</span></p><p><span>As Privates Sergeants and Corporal (Lance)</span></p><p><span>Refusing to budge from burning huts</span></p><p><span>When offered surrender they replied only “Nuts”</span></p><p><span>Their courage and their refusal to lose</span></p><p><span>When asked to back down we must refuse</span></p><p><span>And accept the battle blood and bruise</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We are Jews because we chose</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>We need to remember from where we came</span></p><p><span>It’s as important as our name</span></p><p><span>We don't do it to place the blame</span></p><p><span>Or fan old hatreds or inflame</span></p><p><span>A sense of pride at our people’s fame</span></p><p><span>But as things change they stay the same</span></p><p><span>History doesn't repeat but there is a pattern</span></p><p><span>As we study its like light coming out of a lantern</span></p><p><span>We were slaves in the land of Egypt</span></p><p><span>Everyone knows that's not a secret</span></p><p><span>Our history’s more than pedantry</span></p><p><span>To be Jewish isn’t a pedigree</span></p><p><span>Our future’s not our heredity</span></p><p><span>We have to choose our destiny</span></p><p><span>Pass on our own legacy</span></p><p><span>Make our mark indelibly</span></p><p><span>And focus fundamentally</span></p><p><span>On what’s important essentially</span></p><p><span>We need to always remember to practice empathy</span></p><p><span>For all people deserve their dignity</span></p><p><span>And struggle for their equality</span></p><p><span>To treat all people respectfully</span></p><p><span>No one’s a nonentity</span></p><p><span>Always practice Honesty</span></p><p><span>Pursue justice with intensity</span></p><p><span>Stand up to every enemy</span></p><p><span>Never act recklessly</span></p><p><span>Avoid all forms of This Haggadah will be our guide for tonight’s Seder. <em>Haggadah</em> is Hebrew for <em>the telling</em>. This evening is about telling the story of the Jewish people’s journey from slavery to freedom thousands of years ago, and reminds us to draw on the lessons of bondage, wandering and exile throughout the year. <em>Seder</em> means <em>order</em>.  </span></p><p><span>There is a particular order in which we tell the story, designed to engage all participants, both young and old. The remarkable thing is that we have been telling this story pretty much the same way for 2,000 years! </span></p><p><span>The underlying reason for this consistent retelling is best summed up in the words of Emma Lazarus:</span></p><p><span> “Until all of us are free, none of us is free.”</span></p><p><span>As you look around, you will see several symbolic items that help tell and reinforce the story. There is the Seder plate, holding a number of culinary curiosities, wine cups for everyone (even the kids), a special cup for Elijah and a covered plate concealing three Matzahs. </span></p><p><span>Someone once said that all Jewish holidays have the same theme. They tried to kill us, we got away, lets eat. Thought this is pretty accurate there are other themes in our holidays that are less obvious and a few that are unique to this one. We are commanded to teach this story to our children tonight marks the beginning of this process for a new generation. The truth is that Ava and Adrien are not likely to remember much of tonight so lets consider this a dress rehersal. </span></p><p><span><strong>SEDER PLATE</strong></span></p><p><span>The symbolic food that we display during Passover give us food for thought. Each item placed on the Seder plate has meaning.</span></p><p><span><strong>Matzah:</strong> The unleavened bread made from white flour and water that has come to symbolize the holiday’s message of redemption and freedom. Matzah commemorates the unleavened bread eaten by the Israelites who left Egypt in such haste that they could not wait for their dough to rise. Matzah is also referred to as Lechem Oni, or <em>poor man’s bread</em>. Eating it reminds us to be humble, and to always remember those who are still living with less. The Matzah can either be placed on or near the Seder plate.</span></p><p><span><strong>Z’roah (Roasted Bone):</strong> A roasted lamb or chicken bone on the Seder plate symbolizing the Paschal sacrifice (Korban Pesach) that was offered during the Temple period in Jerusalem. It was traditionally roasted and eaten as part of the meal on Seder night.  Temple worship began in 957 BCE about 300 years after the Exodus. For many Jews the destruction of the temple and the end of a theocratic state was a tragic event. Its important to understand that for 300 years Jews lived in Israel without a king and without a piece of property that was considered holy.</span></p><p><span><strong>Beitzah (Egg):</strong> A roasted, hard-boiled egg represents the holiday sacrifice (Korban Chaggigah) that was offered on every holiday, including Passover, during the Temple period in Jerusalem. The egg also symbolizes mourning, representing our sadness over the destruction of the Holy Temple while at the same time it is a symbol of springtime fertility. In truth the egg is an almost universal symbol of death and rebirth and part of Dionysian rituals of spring. Jews later attempted to separate themselves from the traditions of other people who observed a Spring ritual celeberating death and birth but the egg remains. </span></p><p><span><strong>Maror (Bitter Herbs) and Hazeret:</strong> The bitter herbs remind us of the bitterness of the slavery endured by the Israelites in Egypt. </span></p><p><span><strong>Charoset:</strong> This sweet mixture represents the mortar used by the enslaved Israelites to make bricks to build the Pharaoh’s cities and palaces. Ashkenazic Charoset is traditionally made by mixing together grated apples, sweet red wine, cinnamon and chopped nuts. Sephardic Charoset often includes dates and honey instead of apples.</span></p><p><span><strong>Karpas (Green Vegetable): </strong>The Karpas, usually parsley, symbolizes spring and renewal. It also represents the early years of prosperity in Egypt. The Karpas is dipped in salt water, in the Ashkenazic tradition, or vinegar, in the Sephardic tradition, before being eaten to commemorate the tears, pain and sadness felt by the Israelites while enslaved in Egypt. </span></p><p><span><strong>The Long Service </strong>Long ago the tradition was a service that lasted hours. People added more and more to the service in order to drive home the point that there was much to learn and more to discuss. Here it is included as a sign that we are ready to begin.</span></p><p><span><strong>Cultivating Mindfulness</strong></span></p><p><span>Cleansing before prayer is a rite observed in many cultures. In Judaism, washing occurs prior to breaking bread on the Sabbath and during other festive meals. A ritual ablution — or a Mikveh — is also performed prior to life-cycle events, such as a marriage or conversion.</span></p><p><span>In the Buddhist tradition, washing is a profound ceremonial practice.  It is not the act itself that moves one to experience satori. This comes from the ability to integrate presence of mind with the action at hand.</span></p><p><span>Indeed, washing, like many practices in Buddhism, is not only an opportunity for purification, but for cultivating conscious awareness.</span></p><p><span>As we wash our hands tonight, even this seemingly small act can invite a moment of mindfulness. Somehow as Judiasm developed the role of women was diminished from equal partner to chattel property. Its hard to reconstruct the process but if we look at younger religions like Islam or Christianity we can see clearly that the diminished role of women in religious tradition was not the original position. We know what exhisted only by observing clues that were allowed to remain.
