Famous for its wine consumption, the Passover seder starts with wine and then gives us three more opportunities to refill our cup and drink.</p>\n\n<p>Note to children and others who do not wish to overindulge: four sips of wine is just as good as four cups of wine. Yet we must never confuse these way stations with the goal. Because it is not yet Dayenu. "body": "<p>Let us all refill our cups.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Glass is lifted for all to see.</em> </p>\n\n<p>This is the cup of hope.</p>\n\n<p>The seder tradition involves pouring a cup for the Hebrew prophet Elijah. For millennia, Jews opened the door for him, inviting him join their seders, hoping that he would bring with him a messiah to save the world.</p>\n\n<p>Yet the tasks of saving the world - once ascribed to prophets, messiahs and gods - must be taken up by us mere mortals, by common people with shared goals. Working together for progressive change,we can bring about the improvement of the world, tiqqun ha-olam - for justice and for peace, we can and we must.</p>\n\n<p>Let us now symbolically open the door of our seder to invite in all people of good will and all those in needto work together with us for a better world. Let us raise our fourth cup as we dedicate ourselves to tikkun olam, the improvement of the world.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu melekh ha'olam, borei pri ha'gafen.</em> </p>\n",

"body": "<p>Abraham, the first Jew, left his family of idol worshippers to believe in God who promised his and his wife Sarah’s descendants would be great people. God renewed this promise to their son Isaac and his wife Rebecca, and their son Jacob and his wives Rachel and Leah. God led Abraham and Sarah across the lands to the land of Israel, then called Canaan but warned them that they would be enslaved for hundreds of years. This prophecy came true when Joseph, Jacob and Rachel’s son, came to Egypt after being sold by his brothers. Because of his ability of interpret dreams he rose to power as advisor to Pharaoh. Joseph advised Pharaoh to build storehouses and fill them with grain.</p>\n\n<p>Years of famine struck and the Egyptians still had food. When Joseph’s brothers came in search of food, he invited them to settle in a land called Goshen. This family, known as the Israelites multiplied but soon a new Pharaoh came and didn’t remember Joseph’s heroic actions. He feared the Israelites and their power so he enslaved them. He forced them to do hard labor, building cities and statues made from clay and straw bricks. He also decreed that every baby boy would be drowned in the Nile River.</p>\n\n<p>Two midwives, Shifra and Puah feared God and did not do what Pharaoh bid, instead letting the babies live. One couple, Amram and Yocheved hid their baby for three months but soon his cries became too loud. Yocheved placed him in a basket on the river and her daughter Miriam watched to see what would happen to her brother. The Pharaoh’s daughter discovered the basket and out of pity decided to keep him, naming him Moshe, or Moses, meaning ‘drawn from water’. Miriam went to the princess and asked if she was in need of a nurse, Yocheved was able to watch over and take care of her own son while teaching him about his heritage.</p>\n\n<p>Moses grew up in Pharaoh’s palace but was upset with the suffering of his people. After he saw an Egyptian beating one of the Israelite slaves he could not contain his anger and killed the Egyptian. Knowing his life would be in danger, he fled to Midian where he became a shepard. One day while herding sheep, Moses saw a bush that was on fire and from the bush he heard the voice of God. God said, “I am the God of your ancestors. I have seen the suffering of the Israelites and have heard their cries. I am ready to take them out of Egypt and bring them to a new land, a land flowing with milk and honey.”</p>\n\n<p>Moses took the message from God and went back to the Israelites. When Moses asked Pharaoh to free his people he refused so God brought ten plagues on the Egyptians. Each plague frightened Pharaoh, and he promised to let the Israelites go but when the plagues stopped he took back his promise. It was only after the last plague, the death of the first born, did he let the Israelites go.</p>\n",

As he did, a strong wind drove back the sea and left a part for the Israelites to cross. The Egyptians came after them but the sea closed on them and they started to drown. "body": "<p>Around our tables sit four daughters.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Wise Daughter</strong></p>\n\n<p>The Wise daughter understands that not everything is as it appears.</p>\n\n<p>She is the one who speaks up, confident that her opinion counts. She is the one who can take the tradition and ritual that is placed before her, turn it over and over, and find personal meaning in it. She is the one who can find the secrets in the empty spaces between the letters of the Torah.</p>\n\n<p>She is the one who claims a place for herself even if the men do not make room for her.</p>\n\n<p>Some call her wise and accepting. We call her creative and assertive. We welcome creativity and assertiveness to sit with us at our tables and inspire us to act.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Wicked Daughter</strong></p>\n\n<p>The Wicked daughter is the one who dares to challenge the simplistic answers she has been given.</p>\n\n<p>She is the one who asks too many questions. She is the one not content to remain in her prescribed place. She is the one who breaks the mold. She is the one who challenges the status quo.</p>\n\n<p>Some call her wicked and rebellious. We call her daring and courageous. We welcome rebellion to sit with us at our tables and make us uneasy.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Simple Daughter</strong></p>\n\n<p>The Simple daughter is the one who accepts what she is given without asking for more.</p>\n\n<p>She is the one who trusts easily and believes what she is told. She is the one who prefers waiting and watching over seeking and acting. She is the one who believes that the redemption from Egypt was the final act of freedom. She is the one who follows in the footsteps of others.</p>\n\n<p>Some call her simple and naive. We call her the one whose eyes are yet to be opened. We welcome the contented one to sit with us at our tables and appreciate what will is still to come.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Daughter Who Does Not Know How to Ask</strong></p>\n\n<p>Last is the daughter who does not know how to ask.</p>\n\n<p>She is one who obeys and does not question. She is the one who has accepted men’s definitions of the world. She is the one who has not found her own voice. She is the one who is content to be invisible.</p>\n\n<p>Some call her subservient and oppressed. We call her our sister. We welcome the silent one to sit with us at our tables and experience a community that welcomes the voices of women.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Daughter Who Could Not Make It</strong></p>\n\n<p>We also mention the daughter who could not make it.</p>\n\n<p>She is the one who was killed in a Concentration Camp. She is the one who was oppressed by the Nazi's in her homeland. She is the one who couldn't escape to a better place.</p>\n\n<p>Some call her nonexistent. We call her a hero. We welcome prayers for her and the other forgotten lives we lost in the Holocaust.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>Passover is the celebration of life.<br />\nThe story of the Jewish people is truly a triumph of life.<br />\nAgainst the odds of history, the Jewish people have done more than survive -<br />\nwe have adapted creatively to each new time, each new place,<br />\nfrom the birth of our people to the present day.</p>\n\n<p>Even though death has pursued us relentlessly,<br />\ntime and time again, we have chosen to live.<br />\nDuring the many centuries of the Jewish experience,<br />\nmemories of destruction are tempered<br />\nby the knowledge that the world can also be good.</p>\n\n<p>We have endured slavery and humiliation.<br />\nWe have also enjoyed freedom and power.<br />\nDarkness has been balanced by light.</p>\n\n<p>Our forebears traveled the Earth<br />\nin search of the safety and liberty they knew must exist.<br />\nWe have learned to endure.<br />\nWe have learned to progress.</p>\n\n<p>We are proud survivors.<br />\nWe celebrate our good fortune<br />\nand seek the advancement of all.</p>\n\n<p>One of the customs of the seder is the asking of questions -<br />\nquestions about what the ritual actions of the seder mean.<br />\nThe Passover tradition involves the youngest children asking - actually singing -<br />\nabout these matters in a song we call \"The Four Questions.\"</p>\n\n<p>But tonight we are instead asking about the four problems in the world.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>Let us all refill our cups.</p>\n\n<p>Tonight we drink four cups of the fruit of the vine.<br />\nThere are many explanations for this custom.<br />\nThey may be seen as symbols of various things:<br />\nthe four corners of the earth, for freedom must live everywhere;<br />\nthe four seasons of the year, for freedom's cycle must last through all the seasons;<br />\nor the four matriarchs: Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, and Rachel.</p>\n\n<p>A full cup of wine symbolizes complete happiness.<br />\nThe triumph of Passover is diminished by the sacrifice of many human lives<br />\nwhen ten plagues were visited upon the people of Egypt.<br />\nIn the story, the plagues that befell the Egyptians resulted from the decisions of tyrants,<br />\nbut the greatest suffering occurred among those who had no choice but to follow.</p>\n\n<p>It is fitting that we mourn their loss of life, and express our sorrow over their suffering.<br />\nFor as Jews and as Humanists we cannot take joy in the suffering of others.<br />\nTherefore, let us diminish the wine in our cups<br />\nas we recall the ten plagues that befell the Egyptian people.</p>\n\n<p>As we recite the name of each plague, in English and then in Hebrew,<br />\nplease dip a finger in your wine and then touch your plate to remove the drop.</p>\n\n<p><strong>Blood</strong> - Dam (Dahm)<br />\n<strong>Frogs </strong>- Ts'phardea (Ts'phar-DEH-ah)<br />\n<strong>Gnats </strong>- Kinim (Kih-NEEM)<br />\n<strong>Flies </strong>- Arov (Ah-ROV)<br />\n<strong>Cattle Disease</strong> - Dever (DEH-vehr)<br />\n<strong>Boils</strong> - Sh'hin (Sh'-KHEEN)<br />\n<strong>Hail</strong> - Barad (Bah-RAHD)<br />\n<strong>Locusts</strong> - `Arbeh (Ar-BEH)<br />\n<strong>Darkness </strong>- Hoshekh (KHO-shekh)<br />\n<strong>Death of the Firstborn</strong> - Makkat B'khorot (Ma-katB'kho-ROT)</p>\n\n<p>In the same spirit, our celebration today also is shadowed<br />\nby our awareness of continuing sorrow and oppression in all parts of the world.<br />\nAncient plagues are mirrored in modern tragedies.</p>\n\n<p>In our own time, as in ancient Egypt, ordinary people suffer and die<br />\nas a result of the actions of the tyrants who rule over them.<br />\nWhile we may rejoice in the defeat of tyrants in our own time,<br />\nwe must also express our sorrow at the suffering of the many innocent people<br />\nwho had little or no choice but to follow.</p>\n\n<p>As the pain of others diminishes our joys,<br />\nlet us once more diminish the ceremonial drink of our festival<br />\nas we together recite the names of these modern plagues:</p>\n\n<p><strong>Hunger<br />\nWar<br />\nTyranny<br />\nGreed<br />\nBigotry<br />\nInjustice<br />\nPoverty<br />\nIgnorance<br />\nPollution of the Earth Indifference to Suffering</strong></p>\n",

"body": "<p>Matzah – why do we eat it during Pesach? We eat it because the dough of our ancestors did not have time to become leavened before they fled from Egypt. It is said, “They baked unleavened cakes of the dough they brought with them out of Egypt. They could not tarry and had not made special provisions for themselves.</p>\n\n<p>In every generation we are each bound to regard ourselves as if we had personally gone forth from Egypt, to remember that struggle and the meaning and responsibilities of freedom. We celebrate moving from slavery to freedom, sorrow to joy, mourning to festivity, and servitude to redemption. Hallelujah!</p>\n\n<p><em>Barukh ata adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, ha-motzi lechem meen ha-aretz. </em></p>\n\n<p>Blessed it the force that brings forth bread from the earth.</p>\n\n<p><em>Barukh ata adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher kid d’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzeevanu al akheelat matzah. </em></p>\n\n<p>Blessed is the force that has sanctified us with the commandment to eat unleavened bread.</p>\n",

This sweetness gives us hope that the future will bring redemption and justice to all people.</p>\n\n<p><strong>We make sandwiches out of maror and charoset, to remind us of the mortar our ancestors used to construct huge monuments for Pharaoh in Egypt.</strong></p>\n\n<p>As you we eat this sandwich, we consider the signs of hope for a more just future that can be seen in your community. "body": "<p>Searching and finding the matzah is a symbol of a child growing up. It is tradition for the children to search for and find the afikomen, and when they do, they are given a reward by the adults. The act of leaving the table and searching for the matzah represents the Israelites coming out of Egypt, and the finding of the afikomen represents giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.</p>\n\n<p>Searching for the afikomen is also a very spiritual part of the seder. In contrast with the strict order of the preparation and dinner, we can go and search for the afikomen without any rules or regulations. Well some rules, no tipping furniture, going in bedrooms, or breaking lamps.This resembles the inner search for meaning that is a key part of growing up. As times change, it is important for us to get a grasp on different events and problems that come.</p>\n",
