"body": "<p>Why Do We Celebrate Passover?</p>\n\n<p>Passover has been celebrated in Jewish homes for thousands of years as a way of passing on the important story of Moses and of the exodus from Egypt. Some Christian families celebrate Passover as well, because Jesus was Jewish. The famous Last Supper in the Christian tradition was actually a Passover Seder meal. We come together as one family today. Whether we are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Bahá’i, Unitarian-Universalist, Humanist or from another faith, on Passover we can all be inspired by one of the most famous stories from the Hebrew Bible, or <em>Torah</em>. As we read it, we appreciate our freedom and we renew our commitment to working for justice all over the world. [Boston]</p>\n\n<p>-----</p>\n\n<p>We are to be together on <em>Pesach</em> night as if we were with the Israelites in Egypt. There is no distinction between them and us and we are to allow their fears to be ours and their redemption ours. It is a story of such power that it has been used by slaves throughout history. The story carries a profound truth within its miracles and wonders. With the right <em>kavanah</em> (intention) on <em>Pesach</em> night we can enter our own Egypt, our <em>Mitzrayim </em> or narrow place, wherever or whatever that is. We can relive this story and we can feel the rush of liberation. This is not only our history but our reason to keep moving forward, realizing this is a story that belongs to all humanity, if only they would listen. We are the story-tellers. [Barbara Carr]</p>\n\n<p>--------</p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight we celebrate a story of freedom, telling the story and praying together. At the Seder we should also claim the freedom of expression—to pray as we feel most comfortable. Judaism has no name for God, or rather we have a name (YHVH), but don’t know how to pronounce it. If we did, some people would not feel comfortable saying it—too familiar. (Others would be happy to claim a first name relationship; after all we are told we are all created in the image of God.) Some people say Adonai (Lord), but to others that has a pretty strong gender reference. Yah is a shortened reference to YHVH; maybe a nickname feels good. Shechinah! Shechinah refers to the feminine attributes of God’s presence. Mix and match?</p>\n",

But maybe it is also because we ourselves have different answers, at different times and in different contexts. Maybe we give different answers because we ourselves are still thinking it through. As we remember the liberation from Egypt, we also recognize the stirrings of spring and rebirth happening in the world around us. The symbols on our table bring together elements of both kinds of celebration.</p>\n\n<p>We now take a vegetable, representing our joy at the dawning of spring after our long, cold winter. Most families use a green vegetable, such as parsley or celery, but some families from Eastern Europe have a tradition of using a boiled potato since greens were hard to come by at Passover time. Whatever symbol of spring and sustenance we’re using, we now dip it into salt water, a symbol of the tears our ancestors shed as slaves. Before we eat it, we recite a short blessing:</p>\n\n<p><strong>בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה</strong></p>\n\n<p>Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruits of the earth.</p>\n\n<p>Song of Songs (2:10-12)</p>\n\n<p>Arise my beloved, my fair one, and come away; for lo, the winter is past,</p>\n\n<p>Flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing is here.</p>\n\n<p>The song of the dove is heard in our land.</p>\n\n<p>Let us go down to the vineyards to see if the vines have budded.</p>\n\n<p>There will I give you my love.</p>\n\n<p><strong> Love</strong> seems an odd theme for Passover, but love is a core teaching. We are commanded to love God and love for all people flows from this commandment since we are all created in God's image.</p>\n\n<p>Ahavah v'rachamim, chesed v'shalom</p>\n\n<p>Love and compassion, kindness and peace</p>\n\n<p><u>The Artichoke on the Seder Plate</u></p>\n\n<p>The seder plate holds the main symbols of a traditional Passover seder-- the shank bone, egg, karpas, charoset, and maror. The Kabbalists of the Middle Ages added hazeret, another kind of bitter lettuce. And in recent years feminists have added an orange* on the seder plate to symbolize women's leadership roles and full empowerment in Jewish life.</p>\n\n<p>The artichoke however is a new development. What is an artichoke? Surely a work of God's imagination! Many petals, with thistle and a heart. To me this has come to represent the Jewish people.</p>\n\n<p>We are first of all, very diverse in our petals. We call people Jews who are everything from very traditional Orthodox Hassidim, to very liberal secular. We are Reform, Reconstructionist, Orthodox, traditional, Modern Orthodox, Conservative, Renewal, and, of course, post-denominational. We are social justice activists and soldiers; we are Israelis and Jews of the Diaspora. We are young, old, single, married. Many are vegetarian, while others swear by Hebrew National. Our skin can be white as Scandinavian, dark black as Ethiopian, and we now welcome many Chinese and Latin American adoptees. Lately we add another category, that of interfaith.</p>\n\n<p>Like the artichoke, which has thistles protecting its heart, the Jewish people have been thorny about this question of interfaith marriage. Let this artichoke on the seder plate tonight stand for the wisdom of God's creation in making the Jewish people a population able to absorb many elements and cultures throughout the centuries--yet still remain Jewish. Let the thistles protecting our hearts soften so that we may notice the petals around us.</p>\n",

The tradition that the youngest person asks the questions reflects the centrality of involving everyone in the seder. The rabbis who created the set format for the seder gave us the Four Questions to help break the ice in case no one had their own questions. Asking questions is a core tradition in Jewish life, so we should do it together.</p>\n\n<p><strong>מַה נִּשְׁתַּנָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מִכָּל הַלֵּילות</strong></p>\n\n<p>Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol haleilot?</p>\n\n<p>Why is this night different from all other nights?</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכלין חָמֵץ וּמַצָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלּוֹ מצה</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin chameitz u-matzah. Halaila hazeh kulo matzah.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights we eat both leavened bread and matzah. Tonight we only eat matzah.</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכְלִין שְׁאָר יְרָקוֹת הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מָרוֹר</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin shi’ar yirakot haleila hazeh maror.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights we eat all kinds of vegetables, but tonight we eat bitter herbs.</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אֵין אָֽנוּ מַטְבִּילִין אֲפִילוּ פַּֽעַם אחָת הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה שְׁתֵּי פְעמים</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot ain anu matbilin afilu pa-am echat. Halaila hazeh shtei fi-amim.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights we aren’t expected to dip our vegetables one time. Tonight we do it twice.</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכְלִין בֵּין יוֹשְׁבִין וּבֵין מְסֻבִּין. :הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלָּֽנוּ מְסֻבין</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin bein yoshvin uvein m’subin. "body": "<p>Contributed by <a href=\"http://www.haggadot.com/contributors-details/294\">JewishBoston .com</a> (edited)</p>\n\n<p>Our story starts in ancient times, with Abraham, credited with the idea of one God, invisible and all-powerful, inspired him to leave his family and begin a new people in Canaan, the land that would one day bear his grandson Jacob’s adopted name, Israel.</p>\n\n<p>God had made a promise to Abraham that his family would become a great nation, but this promise came with a frightening vision of the troubles along the way.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Raise the glass of wine and say:</em> </p>\n\n<p> This promise has sustained our ancestors and us.</p>\n\n<p> <em>The glass of wine is put down.</em> </p>\n\n<p>In the years our ancestors lived in Egypt, our numbers grew, and soon the family of Jacob became the People of Israel. Pharaoh and the leaders of Egypt grew alarmed by this great nation growing within their borders, so they enslaved us. We were forced to perform hard labor, perhaps even building pyramids. The Egyptians feared that even as slaves, the Israelites might grow strong and rebel. So Pharaoh decreed that Israelite baby boys should be drowned, to prevent the Israelites from overthrowing those who had enslaved them.</p>\n\n<p>But God heard the cries of the Israelites. And God brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and outstretched arm, with great awe, miraculous signs and wonders. God brought us out not by angel or messenger, but through God’s own intervention.</p>\n\n\n",

What can these words mean?</p>\n\n<p>We were slaves because yesterday our people were in slavery and memory makes yesterday real for us. We are slaves because today there are still people in chains around the world, and no one can be truly free while others are in chains.</p>\n\n<p>We are slaves because freedom means more than broken chains. Where there is poverty and hunger and homelessness, there is no freedom; where there is prejudice and bigotry and discrimination, there is no freedom; where there is violence and torture and war, there is no freedom.</p>\n\n<p>And where each of us is less than he or she might be, we are not free, not yet.</p>\n\n<p>And who, this year, can be deaf to the continuing oppression of the downtrodden, who can be blind to the burdens and the rigors that are now to be added to the most vulnerable in our midst?</p>\n\n<p>If these things be so, who among us can say that he or she is free?</p>\n\n<p>----</p>\n\n<p>Therefore it is our duty and privilege to say thanks, to praise, to glory, to extol and exalt,<br />\nand to bless and to stand in awe of these miracles:<br />\nThat we yet come out:<br />\n- from servitude to freedom<br />\n- from sorrow to joy<br />\n- from grief to celebration<br />\n- from shadow to sunlight<br />\n- from slavery to liberation<br />\nTherefore, let us sing a new song, Halleluyah<br />\nBlessed it is that we and our forbears have become liberated from bondage, that we are able<br />\nto sit here and celebrate, eating matzah and bitter herbs. Some of us might sing traditional prayers from the Book of Psalms. Others take this moment for favorites like Chad Gadya & Who Knows One, which you can find in the appendix. To celebrate the theme of freedom, we might sing songs from the civil rights movement… just roll with it. [To help:]</p>\n\n<p>Fourth Glass of Wine<br />\nAs we come to the end of the seder, we drink one more glass of wine. With this final cup, we give thanks for the experience of celebrating Passover together, for the traditions that help inform our daily lives and guide our actions and aspirations.</p>\n\n<p>Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree hagafen.</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruit of the vine.</p>\n\n<p>Drink, Smile</p>\n\n<p>ELIJAH & MIRIAM</p>\n\n<p>Elijah was a prophet in the days of the autocratic kings of ancient Israel. He was sent<br />\nto defy their power. According to custom, he did not die, but stayed to witness the<br />\ngood that people could do in the world that would eventually bring about the ideals<br />\nof a messianic era. It was a custom to see Elijah as the one who would eventually<br />\nresolve all outstanding divisive issues – including the question of whether the<br />\nnumber of cups of the seder were four or five. An extra cup is kept on the table in<br />\nhonor of Elijah’s role in resolving conflict in the building of community.</p>\n\n<p>Miriam, of the Exodus story, was seen in the Midrash as having the implement of a<br />\nportable well which would overflow at each spot the Israelites would camp. The<br />\nlegend says that the flow from her well would create rivulets which enabled people in<br />\nthe encampments to raft their way to each other and create a network of community<br />\nadhesiveness.</p>\n\n<p>[Kehilla]</p>\n\n<p>Let us honor Miriam with Elijah's Cup, we pour a bit more wine, to have the cup overflow.</p>\n",

"body": "<p>Nirtzah</p>\n\n<p>Nirtzah marks the conclusion of the seder. We’ve eaten, we’ve had several glasses of wine, we’ve told stories and sung songs, and now it is time for the evening to come to a close. At the end of the seder, we honor the tradition of declaring, “Next year in Jerusalem!”</p>\n\n<p>For some people, the recitation of this phrase expresses the anticipation of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem and the return of the Messiah. For others, it is an affirmation of hope and of connectedness with Klal Yisrael, the whole of the Jewish community. Still others yearn for peace in Israel and for all those living in the Diaspora.</p>\n\n<p>Though it comes at the end of the seder, this moment also marks a beginning. We are beginning the next season with a renewed awareness of the freedoms we enjoy and the obstacles we must still confront. We are looking forward to the time that we gather together again. Having retold stories of the Jewish people, recalled historic movements of liberation, and reflected on the struggles people still face for freedom and equality, we are ready to embark on a year that we hope will bring positive change in the world and freedom to people everywhere.</p>\n\n<p>In The Leader's Guide to the Family Participation Haggadah: A Different Night, Rabbi David Hartman writes: “Passover is the night for reckless dreams; for visions about what a human being can be, what society can be, what people can be, what history may become.”</p>\n\n<p>What can we do to fulfill our reckless dreams? What will be our legacy for future generations?</p>\n\n<p>Our seder is over, according to Jewish tradition and law. As we had the pleasure to gather for a seder this year, we hope to once again have the opportunity in the years to come. We pray that God brings health and healing to Israel and all the people of the world, especially those impacted by natural tragedy and war. As Rabbi David Cooper put it \"I don't believe in the God you don't believe in.\"</p>\n\n<p>\"All images or metaphors (including the word God) attempting to render an ineffable experience are necessary and even noble, sacred projections that hide as much as they reveal and to confuse an image with God or to make any image a literal and exhaustive representation of God is the classic definition of idolatry. Descriptions of God should never be confused with God anymore than the description of passionate love making should be confused with making love... <em>my</em> tradition names [God as} <em>Ein Sof </em> which literally means \"There is No End\" and which the mystic poets of the Bible cal YHWH from the Hebrew root Becoming.\" (Rabbi Irwin Kula, \"How Big Is Your God?\") No white man, no beard.</p>\n\n<p>So what is prayer? Clearly prayer is not any one thing, it ranges from a communal action to honor one's heritage; to a very personal need to speak aloud and identify what is important to you; to a practice to allow one to experience touching the divine. In some cases we accept using language that we do not believe in (that old man with a white beard) to send a message to others, just as we say (Rabbi David Cooper again) the \"Sun is going down\" even though we know it is the Earth that is turning.</p>\n\n<p>Tonight may we all find something in these prayers that speaks to each of us.</p>\n",
