Joseph, Jacob's son, brought his family to live in Egypt during a time of famine. The Pharaoh of Egypt welcomed them and the Jews prospered and multiplied. But later a new Pharaoh came to the throne who \"knew not Joseph,\" and he enslaved the Hebrews and forced them to do hard labor for the Egyptians. </p>\n\n<p>Generations passed. The new Pharaoh, afraid of the potential power of the growing Hebrew population, ordered the death of all newborn male Hebrews. Baby Moses was born to a Hebrew mother during this time, who hid him in the rushes of the Nile River to save his life. Moses was discovered by the daughter of Pharaoh and raised Moses as her child, a prince of Egypt. </p>\n\n<p>As a young man, Moses was so enraged by the sight of an overseer whipping Hebrew slaves that he struck the overseer and killed him. Realizing the gravity of his action, Moses was afraid for his own safety and fled to the desert. In the land of Midian, he married Zipporah, the daughter of Midian priest Jethro, and lived as a shepherd for many years. </p>\n\n<p>Moses was finally called by God, who appeared before him in a bush that burned but was not consumed, to return to Egypt and free the people of his birth. Moses returned to Egypt and together with his brother Aaron, went before Pharaoh to persuade him to release the Hebrews. When Pharaoh refused to release the slaves, God sent a series of ten plagues to Egypt, bringing hardship to the land, its animals, and its people. With each plague, while it was happening, Pharaoh would give in and agree to let the Hebrews leave. We can also bring the story of Exodus into our own lives. We continue with the recitation of ten contemporary plagues, and as with the Biblical plagues in Egypt, we remove drops of wine from our cups in recognition of the sorrow inflicted by our own modern plagues:<br />\n<br />\nPoverty<br />\nRacism<br />\nSexism and homophobia<br />\nViolence<br />\nIntolerance<br />\nHunger <br />\nDisease<br />\nApathy<br />\nIgnorance<br />\nEnvironmental degradation<br />\n<br />\nAfter the tenth plague, the killing of the firstborn across the land, Pharaoh relented, and the Hebrews departed Egypt in haste on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan. Tradition tells us that they did not even take the time needed for their bread to rise, and instead they left with only matzah, the unleavened bread we eat in solidarity with them during Passover. After three days, Pharaoh began to regret that he had permitted the slaves to leave. He mobilized his army in hot pursuit of the Israelites and reached them near the banks of the Sea of Reeds. <br />\n<br />\nMoses led the people from Egypt until they came to the very borders of the Sea of Reeds. Then God spoke to Moses, saying, \"Lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children shall go into the midst of the sea on dry ground.\" Moses did as God had commanded. Then a strong wind blew all night and the waters of the Sea parted. The Israelites marched along a dry path through the Sea until they reached the other side in safety.
