But it is not the wine we sanctify. Instead, the wine is a symbol of the sanctity, the preciousness, and the sweetness of this moment. Held together by sacred bonds of family, friendship, peoplehood, we share this table tonight with one another and with all the generations who have come before us. Let us rise, and sanctify this singular moment.</p>\n",

However distant that day may be, those who can envision it muster the strength to bring it closer. Belief in redemption stands as one of those fundamental human divides. It’s the difference between those who believe we’re in a tunnel, though we sometimes can’t see the light at the end, and those who think there is no tunnel, just a world that’s unalterably dark. When confronting this history, how do we answer our children when</p>\n\n<p>they ask us how to pursue justice in our time?</p>\n\n<p>What does the activist child ask?</p>\n\n<p>“The Torah tells me, ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue,’ but how can I pursue justice?”</p>\n\n<p>Empower her always to seek pathways to advocate for the vulnerable. As Proverbs</p>\n\n<p>teaches, “Speak up for the mute, for the rights of the unfortunate. Speak up, judge</p>\n\n<p>righteously, champion the poor and the needy.”</p>\n\n<p>What does the skeptical child ask?</p>\n\n<p>“How can I solve problems of such enormity?”</p>\n\n<p>Encourage him by explaining that he need not solve the problems, he must only do</p>\n\n<p>what he is capable of doing. As we read in Pirkei Avot—The Ethics of Our Ancestors,</p>\n\n<p>“It is not your responsibility to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist</p>\n\n<p>from it.”</p>\n\n<p>What does the indifferent child say?</p>\n\n<p>“It’s not my responsibility.”</p>\n\n<p>Persuade her that responsibility cannot be shirked. As Rabbi Abraham Joshua</p>\n\n<p>Heschel writes, “The opposite of good is not evil; the opposite of good is</p>\n\n<p>indifference. In a free society where terrible wrongs exist, some are guilty, but all</p>\n\n<p>are responsible.”</p>\n\n<p>And the uninformed child who does not know how to ask ...</p>\n\n<p>Prompt him to see himself as an inheritor of our people’s legacy. As it says in</p>\n\n<p>Deuteronomy, “You must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land</p>\n\n<p>of Egypt.”</p>\n",

On Passover, this becomes something like an extended toast to God, culminating with drinking our third glass of wine for the evening:</p>\n\n<p>בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, הַזָּן אֶת הַכֹּל</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, Ruler of Everything, whose goodness sustains the world. You are the origin of love and compassion, the source of bread for all. Thanks to You, we need never lack for food; You provide food enough for everyone. We praise God, source of food for everyone.</p>\n\n<p>As it says in the Torah: When you have eaten and are satisfied, give praise to your God who has given you this good earth. We praise God for the earth and for its sustenance.</p>\n\n<p>Renew our spiritual center in our time. "body": "<p>As we tell the story, we think about it from all angles. Our tradition speaks of four different types of children who react individually to the Passover Seder. It is our job to make our story accessible to all the members of our community:</p>\n\n<p><strong>WHAT DOES THE WISE CHILD SAY? </strong>The wise child asks, What are the testimonies and laws which God commanded you? You must teach this child the rules of observing the holiday of Passover.</p>\n\n<p><strong>WHAT DOES THE WICKED CHILD SAY? </strong>The wicked child asks, What does this service mean to you? To you and not to himself! Because he takes himself out of the community and misses the point, say to him: “It is because of what God did for me in taking me out of Egypt.” Me, not him. Had that child been there, he would have been left behind.</p>\n\n<p><strong>WHAT DOES THE SIMPLE CHILD SAY? </strong>The simple child asks, What is this? To this child, answer plainly: “With a strong hand God took us out of Egypt, where we were slaves.”</p>\n\n<p><strong>WHAT ABOUT THE CHILD WHO DOESN</strong>’<strong>T KNOW HOW TO ASK A QUESTION? </strong>Help this child ask. Start telling the story: “It is because of what God did for me in taking me out of Egypt.”</p>\n",

We regret that our freedom came at the cost of the Egyptians’ suffering, for we are all human beings. We pour out a drop of wine for each of the plagues as we recite them to signify having a little less sweetness in our celebration. "body": "<p><strong>Every Person Needs to Have a Certain Egypt</strong><br />\nPoem by: Amnon Ribak<br />\n<a href=\"https://origin.library.constantcontact.com/doc200/1101081529464/doc/xGVh9Kh0Wxx7v3BO.pdf%22%20%5Ct%20%22_blank\"> <em>The poem in Hebrew</em> </a></p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every person needs to have a<br />\ncertain Egypt,<br />\nTo deliver themselves from it<br />\nwith a strong arm,<br />\nor with grinding teeth.</p>\n\n<p>Every person needs terror and great darkness,<br />\nand comfort and promise and redemption,<br />\nthat they would know to look up at the sky.<br />\nEvery person needs one<br />\nprayer,</p>\n\n<p>that would always be on their lips.<br />\nA person needs to bend one time –<br />\nEvery person needs a shoulder.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Every </em> person <em> needs </em> to have a<br />\ncertain Egypt,</p>\n\n<p>to redeem themselves from it, from the house of slavery,</p>\n\n<p>to go out in the middle of the night to the desert of fears,<br />\nto march straight into the waters,<br />\nto see them open before them to both sides.</p>\n\n<p>Every person needs a shoulder,<br />\non which to carry the bones of Joseph,<br />\nEvery person needs to straighten their backs.</p>\n\n<p>Every person needs to have a<br />\ncertain Egypt,<br />\nand a Jerusalem,<br />\nand one long journey,<br />\nthat they will forever remember<br />\nin their feet.</p>\n",

With this final cup, we give thanks for the experience of celebrating Passover together, for the traditions that help inform our daily lives and guide our actions and aspirations.</p>\n\n<p>בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן</p>\n\n<p>Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree hagafen.</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruit of the vine.</p>\n\n<p><strong>The Cup of Elijah</strong></p>\n\n<p>We now refill our wine glasses one last time and open the front door to invite the prophet Elijah to join our Seder. In the Bible, Elijah was a fierce defender of God to a disbelieving people. At the end of his life, rather than dying, he was whisked away to heaven. Tradition holds that he will return in advance of messianic days to herald a new era of peace, so we set a place for Elijah at many joyous, hopeful Jewish occasions.</p>\n\n<p>Eliyahu hanavi Eliyahu hatishbi Eliyahu, Eliyahu, Eliyahu hagiladi Bimheirah b’yameinu, yavo eileinu Im mashiach ben-David Im mashiach ben-David</p>\n\n<p>Elijah the prophet, the returning, the man of Gilad: return to us speedily, in our days with the messiah, son of David.</p>\n\n<p>Everybody knows that we place a cup of wine for the prophet Elijah at the center of the Seder table. At a dramatic moment in the Seder, the door is opened to welcome this usually unseen guest into our homes in the hope that the final, messianic, redemption of all people is at hand. Our ancient traditions tell us that final redemption will come at the season of Israel's redemption from Egyptian bondage - on some Passover to come.</p>\n\n<p>We sing Elijah's song, and watch expectantly and hopefully for the wine in the cup to diminish, a sure sign that Elijah has visited and the dawn of a new redemption is near. Of more recent origin is the custom of placing a second cup on the Seder table for a second unseen but deserving guest - the prophetess, Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron.</p>\n\n<p>Why Miriam? Who was it who, disregarding her own safety, dared to approach the Pharaoh's daughter, Princess of Egypt, and offer to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the child for her? Who was it who led the redeemed Israelite women and men in song and dance to celebrate their salvation at the Sea?</p>\n\n<p>It was Miriam, the Prophetess, symbol of all the courageous and worthy women who kept the home fires burning, even when the men became discouraged and despaired of redemption. Who then is more deserving to be \"toasted\" with water and saluted for service \"above and beyond\" than she?</p>\n\n<p>If the Cup of Elijah is one symbolizing hope for future redemption, Miriam's Cup symbolizes redemption realized through the tireless efforts of Israel's women. Let us honor her for her heroism, and through her, all the brave, capable, devoted, faithful and loyal women of Israel who have been, and continue to be, the ongoing source of Israel's strength.</p>\n\n<p>For the sake of our righteous women were our ancestors redeemed from Egypt. L'Chaim!</p>\n\n<p><strong>DRINK THE FOURTH GLASS OF WINE</strong></p>\n",
