Ma Nishtanah - Wrestling Through QuestionIng
The holiday Passover celebrates the Israelites redemption from Egypt's oppressive regime. While the Haggadah outlines God's role and power in this exodus, many find it diffcult to connect with the idea of God in today's world. Ironically, the term "Israelites," rooted in the Hebrew Yisrael, means to struggle with God – the idea, the reality and the need of God within our lives. Thus, while the observance of Passover focuses on God, so too does it make ongoing questioning central.
Prior to retelling our story, the Ma Nishtanah provides us a time to become and to embody an Israelite – a wrestler with God – complete with doubt, reconcilation, and understanding in order to strengthen our connection not just to God, but also to our Jewish identities.
Rabbi Adam Grossman is at Temple Israel in Memphis and co-founder of the TI Fellowship.
