"body": "<p><strong>IN EVERY GENERATION</strong></p>\n\n<p>The source of these passages is unknown to me; this passage was read each year at the Seders led by Herbert Lewis, reading from a photocopied sheet. </p>\n\n<p><strong>On this Seder night, we recall with anguish and with love our martyred brothers and sisters, the six million Jews of Europe who were destroyed at the hands of a tyrant more fiendish than Pharaoh. Their memory will never be forgotten. Their murderers will never be forgiven.</strong></p>\n\n<p><strong>Trapped in ghettoes, caged in death camps, abandoned by an unseeing or uncaring world, Jews gave their lives in acts that sanctified God's name and the name of God's people Israel. Some rebelled against their tormentors, fighting with makeshift weapons, gathering the last remnants of their failing strength in peerless gestures of courage and defiance. Others went to their death with their faith in God miraculously unimpaired.</strong></p>\n\n<p><strong>Unchecked, unchallenged evil ran rampant and devoured the holy innocents. But the light of the Six Million will never be extinguished. Their glow illuminates our path. And we will teach our children and our children's children to remember them with reverence and with pride.</strong></p>\n\n<p><strong>We invite the souls of all who are missing, the souls of all who were snatched form our midst, to sit with us together at the Seder. This invitation was uttered by Seder celebrants in the Vila Ghetto in 1942... and we repeat it tonight. For on this night all Jews are united in history and in hope. We were all in Mitzrayim. We were all at Sinai. We were all in the hell the was the Holocaustl. And we will all be present at the final redemption.</strong></p>",

"body": "<p>The Exodus</p>\n\n<p>Modified from a narrative written by Lisa Stolzer.</p>\n\n<p>Exodus means meaning \"going out\". It is the story of our ancestors who went out from slavery in Egypt to freedom. The Bible says, \"We were slaves in the land of Egypt.\" And we have an obligation to tell the story of the Exodus because \"in every generation, one ought to regard oneself as though he or she had been personally liberated from slavery.\" It is written \"in every generation\" because in all generations people struggle for dignity and independence, for meaning and continuity. Long ago, Abraham left his country and his father's house to go to the land of Canaan, where he would become the founder of \"a great nation.\" He married Sarah, and when she was 90 years old, she gave birth to Isaac. Isaac and Rebecca were the parents of twins, Jacob and Esau. Among the twelve sons of Jacob was Joseph, who was sold by his brothers into slavery in Egypt. In Egypt, Joseph came to the attention of the Pharaoh because he had the ability to interpret the Pharaoh's dreams. He became an advisor to Pharaoh. He told Pharaoh to build storehouses and fill them with grain. When years of famine struck, there was food to eat in Egypt. The Pharaoh was so grateful that when Joseph's brothers came in search of food, he invited them to settle. They lived there for many years and became known as the Israelites. After a while, a new king ruled over Egypt \"who knew not Joseph.\" He enslaved the Israelites because they were becoming \"too many and too might for us.\" Taskmasters were set over them and they were afflicted with burdens and they were made to build cities and pyramids for the Egyptians. Generations passed and a new Pharaoh feared a prophecy that a male child would be born to the Hebrew slaves who would lead a rebellion among the slaves and threaten the Pharaoh's throne. This Pharaoh ordered that all newborn boys be thrown into the Nile River. A Levite couple, Amram and Yocheved, would not kill their newborn son, and Yocheved tried to save her baby by setting him adrift on an ark of bulrushes on the river Nile. The Pharoah's daughter, coming to bathe in the river, found the child. She felt pity for the helpless child and decided to keep him as her own. She named him Moshe (Moses), which means \"drawn from the water.\" Moses grew to manhood at the Pharoah's palace, but he could not ignore the suffering of his people. God came to Moses and said to him: \"I am the God of your ancestors. I have seen the suffering of the Israelites and I have heard their cries. I am ready to take them out of Egypt and bring them to a new land, a land flowing with milk and honey.\" God told Moses to return to Egypt to bring the message of freedom to the Israelites, to lead the them into Canaan, the land promised to Abraham. When Moses asked Pharaoh to free the Israelites, he refused, so God brought ten plagues on the Egyptians, including a river of blood, an invasion of frogs, and the death of first-born children. Each plague frightened the Pharaoh, and each time, he promised to free the slaves. But when each plague ended, Pharaoh did not keep his word. It was only after the last plague, the death of the first-born of the Egyptians, that Pharaoh agreed to let the Israelites go. To make sure that no Israelite first-born was destroyed by mistake, the Israelites marked their doorways with the blood of the Paschal lamb so that the Angel of Death would \" pass over their houses.\" The Israelites feared that Pharaoh would not keep his promise to release them, so they prepared to leave Egypt in a great hurry. They did not have time to allow the dough to rise to make bread to take with them, so they baked a simple, unleavened bread. The Israelites did not leave Egypt alone; a “mixed multitude” went with them. From this we learn that liberation is not for us alone, but for all the nations of the earth. Even Pharaoh’s daughter came with them. Pharaoh reneged on his promise and sent his armies to capture and kill the Israelites as they are leaving. They followed the Israelites to the Sea of Reeds, and the waters parted to let the Israelites cross in safety and freedom. We mourn, even now, that Pharaoh's army drowned. Our liberation is bittersweet because people died in our pursuit. To this day, we relive our liberation, that we many not become complacent, that we may always rejoice in our freedom.</p>",

This year, Covid-19 has taken a (probably temporary) back seat to the war in Ukraine and impending climate catastrophes and dire existential threats to our fellow humans and to our planet. Still, let us read and remember.</p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><span><span><b>The Power of Passover During a Plague</b></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>By Alana Newhouse</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>New York Times, March 30, 2020</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>This year, Passover falls at the beginning of April — smack in the middle of what some experts estimate will be the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in America. It’s not just the timing of the holiday — built around a retelling of the Jews’ exodus from slavery in Egypt — that feels off. It’s that every aspect of its story and rituals now seems almost cruelly ironic.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>The Passover Seder centers on the experience of being thrust out of our homes, but these days we feel trapped inside of them. The story involves miraculous plagues that saved us; today we pray for the end of one. There’s the commandment to clean our homes of all non-Passover food, which we just spent innumerable hours and dollars hoarding.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>Then there’s the real heartbreaker: The Seder is when we traditionally gather with family, friends and even strangers. “Let all who are hungry come and eat,” we say. These days, many of us can’t even be in the same house as our own parents or children. We don’t come within six feet of strangers.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>And yet, there will still be Passover. Indeed, I’ve come to think of Passover as the stem cell of the Jewish people, a reserve of core source material with the proven ability to generate new meaning and solace in circumstances even more extreme than what we are living through now.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Perhaps you’re disappointed because you can’t celebrate the way we’re used to. But do you also remember matzo, the unleavened cracker we eat because Jews rushed out of their homes before their bread could rise? The entire holiday is rooted in glorifying a moment when life unfolded in very unexpected ways — and human beings found meaning, even liberation, in it…</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>…Most Jews throughout history have not been free, whether from murderous regimes or famines or pandemics. What we have been is devoted to the idea that we deserve to be. “The Haggadah’s purpose is not, in fact, to present a narrative,” Rabbi Mendel Herson, associate dean of the Rabbinical College of America, explained to me. “It’s a how-to guide to finding our own personal liberation”…</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>…Last week, a group of major Orthodox rabbis in Israel announced that they would permit people to use Zoom videoconferencing for their Seders — a previously unimaginable accommodation to stringent Jewish law. But that’s the point. We may be away from loved ones, or shut out of communal spaces. We may not be <span>preparing with the same vigor</span>, or shopping with the same zeal. But we will do what millions of Jews have done before us: manifest our hope for liberation.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>That is our obligation, and our privilege. It’s not just the timing of the holiday — built around a retelling of the Jews’ exodus from slavery in Egypt — that feels off. It’s that every aspect of its story and rituals now seems almost cruelly ironic.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>The Passover Seder centers on the experience of being thrust out of our homes, but these days we feel trapped inside of them. The story involves miraculous plagues that saved us; today we pray for the end of one. There’s the commandment to clean our homes of all non-Passover food, which we just spent innumerable hours and dollars hoarding.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>Then there’s the real heartbreaker: The Seder is when we traditionally gather with family, friends and even strangers. “Let all who are hungry come and eat,” we say. These days, many of us can’t even be in the same house as our own parents or children. We don’t come within six feet of strangers.</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span>And yet, there will still be Passover. Indeed, I’ve come to think of Passover as the stem cell of the Jewish people, a reserve of core source material with the proven ability to generate new meaning and solace in circumstances even more extreme than what we are living through now…</span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>…Most Jews throughout history have not been free, whether from murderous regimes or famines or pandemics. What we have been is devoted to the idea that we deserve to be. “The Haggadah’s purpose is not, in fact, to present a narrative,” Rabbi Mendel Herson, associate dean of the Rabbinical College of America, explained to me. “It’s a how-to guide to finding our own personal liberation.”</span></span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span><span>That is our obligation, and our privilege. All the more so in moments when the taste of freedom — from oppression, from want, from disease — is not yet ours.</span></span></span></p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><span><i><span>Alana Newhouse is the editor in chief of Tablet magazine, which just published “<span>The Passover Haggadah: An </span>Ancient Story for Modern Times.”</span></i></span></span></p>\n\n",

We succumb to compassion fatigue—aware that we cannot possibly respond to every injustice that arises around the world. On this night, we are reminded that our legacy as the descendants of slaves creates in us a different kind of responsibility—we must protect the stranger because we were strangers in the land of Egypt. </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>Let us add a fifth question to this year’s Seder. Let us ask ourselves: </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><i><span><span><span>How can we make this year different from all other years? </span></span></span></i></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><span>This year, let us recommit to our sacred responsibility to protect the stranger, the poor and the vulnerable: </span></span></span></span></p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li><span><span><span><span><span>When tasting the matzah, the bread of poverty, let us find ways to help the poor and the hungry. </span></span></span></span></span></li>\n\t<li><span><span><span><span><span>When eating the maror, the bitter herbs, let us commit to help those whose lives are embittered by discrimination, persecution and hate. </span></span></span></span></span></li>\n\t<li><span><span><span><span><span>When spilling wine from our glasses to mourn the Egyptians’ suffering during the 10 plagues, let us pledge to aid those who suffer from modern afflictions— from HIV/AIDS to war to Covid-19. </span></span></span></span></span></li>\n\t<li><span><span><span><span><span>When reclining in celebration of our freedom, let us seek opportunities to help those who are still oppressed today. </span></span></span></span></span></li>\n</ul>\n\n",

Even from afar, we hear their cries.<br />\nMay they know that we will continue to advocate for peace among nations<br />\nand that we will strengthen our commitment to aid and protect<br />\nevery human being. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>May the Source of All Life protect all of humanity from violence.<br />\nMay the Source of Peace bring wisdom to their leaders<br />\nand bring a sense of tranquility, <i>shalvah</i>, to the people of the region<br />\nand peace to all who are endangered.<br />\n<i>Amen</i>. </span></span></span></p>",
