Seder is hebrew and means translated structure. The Seder night is called like that for a good reason, cause it follows a certain structure, given by the Hagaddah. She is our very own personal project manager for the evening and gives us a pretty strict order of what to do and when to do it. That means for example, we can’t first eat and then have the other parts while that. But Wehre is the space for spontanity? Indeed there is space for own traditions and customs, but still a Pessach Seder is going to be more or less the same all around the world. Why do we actually need such a kind of order in our Pessach meal? Let’s take it even further? Why do we need order in our life anyways? Let’s compare the order that we have on pessach to the general order that we have in our daily life. Our daily life actually also follows an order: We have to plan our completely lifestyle around the three prayers of the day, that give our life an important structure: Shaharit, Minha and Arvit. Shaharit gives us the opportunity to set our spiritual and non-spiritual goals for the day, while Minha gives time to remind us of those goals. At Arvit we can reflect, if we achieved those goals. In order to achieve our goals in life we need this structure. Our goal for the Seder night is redemption. And as well as in our daily life we need also in the Seder night an order to achieve that goal. How we’re gonna achieve that goal, we’re gonna see on the following pages. Have fun with this amazing memory of an amazing night. The burning bush was the first time that H’ has spoken to Moses, the Manna in the desert was the reason the Jews have been able to survive 40 years in the desert and the 10 plagues were the turning point of the story. They caused the Pharao’s decision to let our people go.</p>\n\n<p>But what is a „miracle?“</p>\n\n<p>When Rabbi Yossi comments on the 10 plagues he writes that not 10, but 50 miracles have happened, Rabbi Yehuda says that 200 miracles have happened and Rabbi Akiva comments that there were even 250.</p>\n\n<p>How is that possible? The 10 plagues are described as 10 miracles and not as 50, 200 or 250. </p>\n\n<p> The answer is that we need to define „miracle“ before we can say how many miracles have happened. One can say that a miracle is something absurd, something we cannot explain. Another would say that miracles do not happen anymore and only happened in ancient times, e.g. the 10 plagues. But what if miracles happen everyday? We can consider the fact that we wake up, every morning, that we are able to walk, to talk and to speak, a miracle. It has been an issue throughout all of Jewish history.</p>\n\n<p>Vehi Sheamda is a very famous song, which describes the tragic stories of the Jewish people. How we had so many enemies, and that many nations have existed, who have tried to kill us.</p>\n\n<p>Why would we sing this sorrowful song and remember the tragic history of the Jewish nation if Pessah is the festival of freedom and release?  </p>\n\n<p>Indeed, Vehi Sheamda is a very happy and beautiful song. The idea of this song is not to remember all our enemies. For me the best explanation of the chacham, rasha, tam and she’einoh yodea lishol is that they represent the four stages of a persons life:</p>\n\n<p>You are born a she’einoh yodea lishol. A baby is innocent, doesn’t know anything yet and is not capable of asking. Nonetheless you tell him stories, teach him.</p>\n\n<p>The next stage is tam, childhood. A child can ask questions, but he doesn’t know much yet, so he asks simple things and you answer him with simple answers.</p>\n\n<p>Then comes the rasha, puberty. A teenager already knows a lot, but does’t want to know what you are trying to teach him. You need to fight with him (as te hagada says „break his teeth”), but it doesn’t help, so you just leave him.</p>\n\n<p>Last is the chacham, adulthood. You know how to live your life in a good way, you can take care of yourself. What is different about tonight? </p>\n\n<p>Tonight we enter Pesach. These are days that remind us of leaving Egypt. But on a deeper level, it is also a chag of doing Tshuva, of being liberated from our own slavery, our own Egypt. </p>\n\n<p>We read the same story of Exodus every single year in order to remind us not to repeat the same mistakes. </p>\n\n<p>At the beginning of the seder we are told to ask questions. Mah nishtana ha layla ha zeh? What is different about tonight?  But also, we ask questions about our religion, about ourselves and about all human beings.</p>\n\n<p>For some religions, questions are frowned upon. \"Accept G-d and just believe with blind faith.\" But in Judaism, even our Prophets ask questions! Take the Prophet Chabakuk for example:</p>\n\n<p>\"1:1The vision that Chabakuk the prophet saw. 2 How long, O God, will I call for help, and You will not hear? I cry out to You,“violence!” Yet You do not save. 3 Why do You make me see injustice, and force me to look at wickedness?\"</p>\n\n<p>We ask questions to better understand the world and to come closer to the truth. By asking questions we purify ourselves and do Tshuva. By asking questions we discover our true \"I\". </p>\n\n<p>So as we are all now seated at the Pesach seder, lets not waste any more time. We also have to search our house for 10 pieces of bread (number according to minhag) that we distributed ourselves. What I have been talking about is the physical removal of chametz but the question is if this act has a deeper and more symbolical meaning.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to me, the removal of chametz is not only removal of physical objects but also a cleansing of our spiritual self. Also, in the secular world, people clean their houses, as a action of spring, but only in Judaism I think that we also search for the jetzer hara and try to “clean” away the evil that may exist inside of ourselves through this action. In order to start experiencing what our forefathers experienced we have to prepare ourselves. Not only by cleaning our house of dirt but also ourselves. While searching for the 10 pieces of bread that we put out in our house, in the dark, we do not only walk around as an activity for the kids but also we show in a symbolical way that we are the ones in charge of our lives. How?</p>\n\n\n\n<p>While walking in the dark we are the ones who hold the wax candle and we are the ones who search for the chametz. There is no one else who can remove this, only our physical body. In a spiritual way, we are walking in the dark, searching for the jetzer hara and only with us holding the wax candle we can guide ourselves to find the bad in ourselves and we are the only ones who can remove it by “burning” it away.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hope that you will be able to find the “jetzer hara” and remove it in order for us to grow continuously. One is our God, in heaven and on earth Two are the tablets of the covenant Three are the patriarchs Four are the Matriarchs Five are the books of the Torah Six are the books of the Mishnah Seven are the days of the week Eight are the days of the circumcision Nine are the months of the pregnant Ten are the Commandments Eleven are the stars of the Joseph's dream Twelve are the tribals of Israel Thirteen are the temperaments of God One of my favorite songs of the Hagada is \"Echad Mi Yodea? - Who knows one?\" This is the part I am waiting for all over the Hagada. The reason therefor is, that this song is meant to be fun and humorous, while still gives different motifs and teachings for children.  This song especially emphasize the connection between god and a human, but also between the five books of the Torah and the six orders of the Mishnah. It reminds me of the long Jewish history and traditions we still keeping and believing. There are phrases mentioned which we are not thinking about day by day. With singing the song we can remember and appreciates what God has given to our nation and be thankful for everything we have gained. L...", "user_image": "", "user_image_original": "", "body": "<p>There is an ancient story that is told every Pesach; a story that every type of people in the universe resonates with. Like any other story that steals the hearts of the masses, it involves a villain and a hero. The villain we frown upon and attack with our cruelest curses, while the hero we rise up on our flag of morals and exclaim with a proud voice, “He represents us!” Pharoah is the name of the villain and Moshe is our hero. How much courage it must have taken for a man who grew up in the very palace of the villain to rebel and stand up for his downcast people. What inner strength he must have summoned in order to overcome his fear of public speaking. What audacity he must have possessed in order to lead an enslaved people from a bursting metropolis of food, shelter and wealth, into a dry, barren desert.</p>\n\n<p>Inspiring, right?</p>\n\n<p>The only problem with this story is that it isn’t the story that we tell on the night of Pesach. Moshe's name isn’t mentioned even once in the Haggada…</p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><u>Do Jews Ignore Their Heroes?</u></p>\n\n<p>In finding a solution to this problem, it might be helpful to look at another great hero of Jewish history and see how we relate to him. The great 11th century Rabbi, Moshe Maimonides (the Rambam), whose <em>Mishnah Torah</em> is learnt by every serious student of law and Talmud, or his <em>Guide for the Perplexed</em>, by every lover of Jewish philosophy, and even the simple Jew who prays out of the siddur each morning, where he comes across Rambam’s <em>“13 Principles of Faith.”</em> Do we dedicate a day in the Jewish calendar to his remembrance? Do we make a pilgrimage to his grave to drop coins to receive blessings? All of the above is something worthy of a hero…a Martin Luther King day, or the Queen of England day. Why so little gratitude from the Jewish people for its heroes? Why such modesty for its icons’ achievements? The one Jew who received honor and recognition for religious reasons was cast out by Jews and used as the figurehead for a new religion!</p>\n\n<p>What is the secret of the missing hero, the missing Moshe in the Haggada of Jewish history?</p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><u>\"You Shall Not Make for Yourself an Idol (Shemot 20:4)\"</u></p>\n\n<p>Perhaps I might suggest the following solution. If the way of the world is normally to load praises and tributes on their heroes as time goes on, to create a nostalgia and romanticism around its famous singers, artists and film stars, to build up images of its heroes, then in true Jewish spirit, we see the total opposite;<em> “you shall not make for yourself an idol (Shemot 20:4),”</em> the destruction of the images of its heroes. The story of Pesach, told from a Jewish perspective, is not Moshe focused, but freedom focused (zman cheirutanu). It is not Moshe we aspire to be. The haggada reads, <em>“In each and ever generation one is obligated to view himself as thought he has gone out of Egypt.”</em> The nullification of the external hero provides the opportunity for the appearance of the hero within. The more a generation idolizes the Martin Luther Kings, Gandhis, Nelson Mandelas, etc., the less it challenges itself to be its own savior. Indeed, the destruction of heroes in Judaism is secretly a way of building more and more heroes for the following generation. For what is the reason we call a hero an idol? Do they not serve as the same function as idols of ancient times- to save a person from his life’s sufferings through the path of passive redemption?</p>\n\n<p>In many ways, the disappearance of Moshe in the Haggada is a protest against two things. One: the refusal to romanticize the past as an excuse for belief in the future self. Two: the rejection of external saviors who often take the place of the inner savior that we call in today’s modern language: “self-belief.” After all, what does our love for superheroes like Superman, Spiderman and Batman do for us if not comfort us with the fantasy that someone ‘out there’ will save our imperfect world. The sickness, crime, and war that fills our world is often too overwhelming, and we all have a sweet tooth for the “Matrix,” Harry Potter, “the one” who will finally end all pain once and for all.</p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><u>\"Each Person Has the Potential to be Righteous Like Moshe Rabbeinu\"</u></p>\n\n<p>So perhaps this is the message of the Haggada; not necessarily the disqualifying of Moshe's heroic role in our proud history, but rather, to teach, as Rambam writes in Hilchot Teshuva (5, 2):</p>\n\n\n\n<p>“A person should not entertain the belief held by fools…that at the time of a man’s creation God decrees whether he will be righteous or wicked. If the Egyptians had seen Jews dying during this time, they would claim that the plagues were just random natural phenomena that affected the Jews just as much as themselves, rather than being messages aimed specifically at the Egyptians from G-d. It is later written that only 1 out of 5 Jews left Egypt (another opinion says 1 out of 500!), the rest having died during the plague of darkness. That means between 80 and 99 percent of Jews died at that time! Was not wanting to leave Egypt really so great a sin that most of the nation had to be killed for it?</p>\n\n<p>And furthermore, we see that there were certainly a number of not very good people who did end up leaving Egypt. Datan and Aviram, two Jews who we only hear of for their evil acts over and over again, somehow merited to leave Egypt. There were a number of rebellions against G-d and Moshe that took place after the Jews left Egypt that involved great portions of the Jews. And often these rebellions included the complaint, \"Why did you take us out of Egypt? It was so much better for us there. Take us back...\" If there were evil people among the Jews who left, and there were people who seemingly also had not wanted to leave Egypt who left, then what was the real distinction between those who died and those who merited to live and be redeemed?</p>\n\n<p>The difference was as follows. Those Jews who left Egypt may or may not have been good people. They may or may not have really wanted to leave. But they believed in the possibility of leaving. They could imagine such an event taking place.</p>\n\n<p>Those Jews who died in Egypt could believe in no such thing. They couldn't even imagine that leaving Egypt was possible. They didn't die as a punishment. They died because that was the greatest end they could picture for themselves. To them, the best release they could imagine from their troubles did not involve redemption- redemption didn't even cross their minds. They believed- they would have even said they knew- that they would live in Egypt as slaves until they died. And so it was.</p>\n\n<p>G-d cannot make our lives other than what we believe they can be. If you believe you must suffer in life, then you will. If you believe there are things you can never achieve, you will certainly never achieve them. If you perceive something as being impossible for you, it most definitely will be. We learn from this midrash about the plague of darkness that you design your own reality. If you want your reality to be better than what it is, you must believe that such a thing is possible. G-d always wants to give us the greatest good, but He can only give us the greatest good that we can receive at any given moment, and that depends on what our beliefs are. Outstanding in the sense that their Dvar Torah stands out. This generally results in an attempt to compile a deep, complex and intellectual idea. This is not a negative phenomenon but can result in a recognition of the trees but a failure to see the forest. Thus I have decided to write a forest Dvar Torah.</p>\n\n<p>It’s quite simple actually – we were slaves in Egypt and then Hashem saved us. As simple as the story is, I don’t think we appreciate the profundity of the event.</p>\n\n<p>We were slaves! Think about it, we were a downtrodden nation, void of basic freedoms, liberties and rights. We never owned our body, our time, our lives. We were nothing more than a cog in a system. But then Hashem, our Father, our King saved us, redeemed us, gave us the gift of freedom the gift of rights and the gift of ownership.</p>\n\n<p>So now what? What does a nation of slaves do? We do what we know best, we build! Then, we o...", "user_image": "", "user_image_original": "", "body": "<p>After the birkat hamazon, most families are following the custom to fill up a cup of wine: The cup of Eliyah! Then, we open the front door of the home and we recite several psalms wherein we ask G-d to protect us from our persecutors and opressors. At this moment, our homes are blessed by the presence of Eliyah. I.Why are we opening the door? The Torah describes the seder night as a \"guarded night\": this night thousands of years ago the Bnei-Israel were protected by G-d from the plagues and especially the one that killed all the egyptian first born. It's one of the moments in the Torah when G-d's protection over us is the most clear and the fact that we are the chosen nation very obvious. Opening the door, shows our trust in G-d's protection and our wish to welcome Eliyah. In my family, the children are opening the door and \"guarding\" it; we say that all the kids that can't speak yet have the ability to see the prophet! Once we were in a hotel with my whole family, as usually me, my sisters and cousins were standing next to the door. As my father begun to read the psalms, I felt a wind draft and exactly at the same moment, the fire alarm begun to ring in the whole building! As a child and even now I think that this wind was a way of showing us Eliya's presence! According to the Midrash, on the night before they left: seder night, every man of the jewish nation had a brit mila in order to be ready to eat from the Paschal Lamb. Therefore there is such a strong connection between Eliyah, the brit mila and Pessah. Eliyah is invited to the seder to make sure that all the participants are circumcised! II.Why is the cup of Eliyah so important? We never resolved the question if we have to fill up 4 or 5 cups, therefore we fill up 5 cups but only drink 4 of them, the 5th is the one of Eliyah. Eliyah was angry against G-d: he tells Him that he was always faithful to Him, always fought for Him, that he always fought against the people that forgot G-d and killed His prophets. Eliyah says he is the only one left and they try to find him in order to kill him! In answer to that G-d takes him his role of prophet back. Why? Because Eliyah thought being religious by sacrifiyng men for G-d. This is not the religion G-d is waiting for. He didn't have to make earth heaven. He can't be a prophet anymore! Eliyahu must learn to be a true religious man: to love and respect G-d but also the men;because G-d cares for them! When does Eliyahu learn this? on seder night! He drinks the 5th cup to bring Moshiah! what's the meaning behind the cup? Religion comes from heaven but is made for earth! That's why he will come to earth before Moshiah to \"correct\" the mistakes he did in the past: \"He will return the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers\" which means that he will bring love between the people of Israel! After the coming of Moshiah, one of Eliyas tasks will be to resolve halahic questions men couldn't find an answer to, such as this doubt about the cups number! The cup of Eliyah is right before the halel whose focus is on the future coming of Moshiah. After comemorating the 1st redemption of the jewish people in Egypt, we express our hope in the coming of Moshiah: the next and final redemption! Eliyah will always be with us in every Pessah and every Brit Mila but I'm sure that he is also always with us in any important celebration. He shows us that even though you're making mistakes, G-d gives you the opportunity to make better and learn from it! We have been redeemed from a house of slavery after years of living </p>\n\n<p>without freedom. Every year we mark this moment by sitting together and </p>\n\n<p>recounting the story of the Exodus. We teach our children the history of our people </p>\n\n<p>so they will do the same to the next generation. </p>\n\n<p>In Igeret 378 (Letter 378) in the book Igrot Hareaya Rav Kook writes:</p>\n\n<p>“Every time shines with its own uniqueness”.</p>\n\n<p>Rav Kook taught us that every period of the year has its own defining </p>\n\n<p>characteristics, and because of that, similar things happen in those days again and </p>\n\n<p>again throughout history. The Second Beit Mikdash, for example, was destroyed </p>\n\n<p>on the same day as the first one, since the beginning of the month of Av is a time </p>\n\n<p>of destruction. The Talmud teaches us that five tragic historical events happened </p>\n\n<p> of Av. Five events also happened on the 17th</p>\n\n<p>on the 9th</p>\n\n<p>for example, is a time a year when judgment is revealed in the world. The historical </p>\n\n<p>events that happen on those days are not mere coincidence, but happen because of </p>\n\n<p>the attributes of the days.</p>\n\n<p>The attribute of the days of Pesach is the Cherut, freedom. And because of that </p>\n\n<p>we have been redeemed on those days. However, the Exodus wasn’t the only </p>\n\n<p>expression of freedom that was revealed at the time of Pesach. In two other periods </p>\n\n<p>in the history the Jewish people have expressed their freedom. Each one of them </p>\n\n<p>represents different type of freedom. </p>\n\n<p>In 70 C.E, many years after the Exodus, the last fighters who survived the massacre </p>\n\n<p>of the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Second Temple gathered in </p>\n\n<p>the last stronghold in Eretz Yisrael for their last battle. They were the people of </p>\n\n<p>Masada. Men, women and children who tried to live a normal Jewish life at the top </p>\n\n<p>of the fortress were busy developing agriculture, practicing Judaism, and learning </p>\n\n<p>Torah. However, at the same time they had to prepare themselves for the Roman </p>\n\n<p>attack. The Romans who decided to destroy all Jewish resistance in the captured </p>\n\n<p>land of Israel arrived to Masada with numerous amounts of soldiers and sieged </p>\n\n<p>the Jewish rebels. The Romans built a ramp to enable them to reach the walls of </p>\n\n<p>Masada. When the ramp and battering ram were ready, the Romans began their </p>\n\n<p>attack. On the night of the 15th</p>\n\n<p>walls and were ready to conquer the fortress. The rebels led by Elazar Ben Yair had </p>\n\n<p>one last night to decide what to do. </p>\n\n<p>According to the historian Josephus (the only historian who wrote about Masada) </p>\n\n<p>Elazar gathered all his people and said:</p>\n\n<p>\"Since we, long ago, my generous friends, resolved never to be </p>\n\n<p>servants to the Romans, nor to any other than to God himself, who </p>\n\n<p>alone is the true and just Lord of mankind, the time is now come </p>\n\n<p>that obliges us to make that resolution true in practice...”</p>\n\n<p>But the people were hesitating it was a hard decision to make. Elazar Ben Yair </p>\n\n<p>continued: </p>\n\n<p> of Nissan, the night of Pesach, the Romans broke the </p>\n\n<p>“Let our wives die before they are abused, and our children before </p>\n\n<p>they have tasted of slavery; and after we have slain them, let </p>\n\n<p>us bestow that glorious benefit upon one another mutually, and </p>\n\n<p>preserve ourselves in freedom, as an excellent funeral monument </p>\n\n<p>for us. But first let us destroy our money and the fortress by fire; </p>\n\n<p>for I am well assured that this will be a great grief to the Romans, </p>\n\n<p>that they shall not be able to seize upon our bodies, and shall fall </p>\n\n<p>of our wealth also; and let us spare nothing but our provisions; </p>\n\n<p>for they will be a testimonial when we are dead that we were not </p>\n\n<p>subdued for want of necessaries, but that, according to our original </p>\n\n<p>resolution, we have preferred death before slavery.\" </p>\n\n<p>The rebels agreed eventually with Elazar Ben Yair and decided that they would </p>\n\n<p>choose mass suicide.</p>\n\n<p>They made a tough decision: to die, but as free people. According to Josephus they </p>\n\n<p>all committed suicide and when their bodies were discovered, the Romans found </p>\n\n<p>that they were unable to ignore the feelings of respect for the Jews’ heroic deaths </p>\n\n<p>and their choice to remain free. On the night of Pesach the rebels of Masada chose, </p>\n\n<p>and their won freedom.</p>\n\n<p>Since then, the years passed and the Jewish people experienced a long exile. When </p>\n\n<p>the voices of returning to Israel began to spread over the world, the Jewish people in </p>\n\n<p>Europe faced the worst consequence of the exile- The holocaust. </p>\n\n<p>When the Jews of Warsaw realised that there was no hope, and the Nazis insisted </p>\n\n<p>on sending all the Jews to the death camp Treblinka, an uprising broke out. The first </p>\n\n<p>act took place in January 1943. The Nazis were shocked and stopped the transports </p>\n\n<p>to Treblinka. The Jewish Combat Organization than published a proclamation: </p>\n\n<p>\"... The Nazi murderers want us alive to take advantage of our </p>\n\n<p>strength for labor until the last drop of blood and sweat... we are </p>\n\n<p>slaves, avadim anachnu. When we are no longer useful; they will </p>\n\n<p>kill us. We should understand that and never forget it... </p>\n\n<p>Jewish People: the moment is coming; you should be prepared to </p>\n\n<p>oppose them and not give yourselves up like lambs to the slaughter. </p>\n\n<p>Not one Jew to the train car! Those who can’t oppose them </p>\n\n<p>actively, hide yourselves... </p>\n\n<p>From this hour forward our slogan shall be: Be ready to die as </p>\n\n<p>human beings!!!\"</p>\n\n<p>On the 19th</p>\n\n<p>uprising and find every single Jew. It was Erev Pesach 5703. Few days later the </p>\n\n<p>commander of the Warsaw uprising, Mordechai Anielewicz, wrote to his deputy, </p>\n\n<p>Yitzchak Zuckerman:</p>\n\n<p> of April 1943 Nazis forces entered the Ghetto aiming to break the </p>\n\n<p>“I have no words to express my sentiments: something has </p>\n\n<p>happened which goes beyond our wildest dreams: the Germans </p>\n\n<p>fled twice from the Ghetto. One of our groups held its position for </p>\n\n<p>forty minutes and there was another which resisted for six hours. </p>\n\n<p>For thirteen days the ghetto has been in flames. After last night </p>\n\n<p>we are passing over to guerrilla warfare. You must realize that a </p>\n\n<p>revolver has no value; we need grenades, rifles, machine guns and </p>\n\n<p>explosives. </p>\n\n<p>I cannot describe to you the conditions in which we find ourselves. </p>\n\n<p>Only a very few will survive: all the rest must succumb, early or </p>\n\n<p>late. Our destiny is already sealed. In all the refuges where our </p>\n\n<p>companions are to be found, it is not possible to light a candle by </p>\n\n<p>night because of the lack of oxygen. </p>\n\n<p>I bid you farewell, my dear. My last wish is fulfilled. I came to see </p>\n\n<p>the Jewish defence of the ghetto, in all its glory and grandeur.\" </p>\n\n<p>Mordechai was killed together with most of his fighters in the uprising, but a new </p>\n\n<p>type of freedom had been revealed; the freedom to choose how to die. The last </p>\n\n<p>fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto chose not to be sent to their death but to fight. In the </p>\n\n<p>last few weeks of their life they were free people who caused fear among the Nazis. </p>\n\n<p>They were free to choose and free to fight for Jewish pride.
