The Fourth Cup: Praise
Fill the fourth cup including an extra cup for Elijah (my God is Jehovah)
The extra cup of wine is poured for Elijah the Prophet who, according to tradition, is expected to arrive at Passover proclaiming the Messiah.
Why Elijah?
Of all the biblical prophets, it is Elijah who became the mediator between heaven and earth. A fiery chariot was sent to carry him from earth to heaven, and from heaven he is to return to earth to help prepare mankind for the coming of the Messiah.
MAL 3:1 "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple"
Luke 1:17 "And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous -- to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
And to the fourth promise, "I will take you as my own people", we lift our cups in worship and pray,
Have compassion on us, O Lord, on your people Israel, on your city Jerusalem, and on the tabernacle of your glory Zion. Bring peace and freedom to every people for You, O Lord, are good and beneficial to all. Blessed are You, eternal Lord our God, sovereign in all of the universe, who gives us the fruit of the vine. Amen.
