A tradition developed that the youngest person asks the questions, although anybody may ask them. The point of this is that everyone is encouraged to participate in the Seder.  The rabbis who originated the traditional Seder ceremony produced the Four Questions, helping to produce questions in case nobody had their own questions. Asking questions is a central tradition in Jewish life, after all.</p>\n\n<p><strong>מַה נִּשְׁתַּנָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מִכָּל הַלֵּילות</strong></p>\n\n<p>Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol haleilot?</p>\n\n<p>I see this night is different from all other nights.</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכלין חָמֵץ וּמַצָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלּוֹ מצה</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin chameitz u-matzah. Halaila hazeh kulo matzah.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights we eat both leavened bread and matzah. Why do we only eat matzah.tonight?</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכְלִין שְׁאָר יְרָקוֹת הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מָרוֹר</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin shi’ar yirakot haleila hazeh maror.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights we eat all kinds of vegetables without thinking of it. Why do we emphasize the bitter herbs tonight?.</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אֵין אָֽנוּ מַטְבִּילִין אֲפִילוּ פַּֽעַם אחָת הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה שְׁתֵּי פְעמים</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot ain anu matbilin afilu pa-am echat. Halaila hazeh shtei fi-amim.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights, we don’t necessarily dip the vegetables. Sometimes, we put salad dressing on them. Why do we dip the vegetables twice tonight?</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכְלִין בֵּין יוֹשְׁבִין וּבֵין מְסֻבִּין. :הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלָּֽנוּ מְסֻבין</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin bein yoshvin uvein m’subin. Halaila hazeh kulanu m’subin.</p>\n\n<p>On all other nights we eat either sitting normally or reclining. There have been numerous enslavements and liberations since then, but it seems that the strongest memories are of the first time around!</p>\n\n<p>So, tonight, let us not only remember when we were slaves in Egypt.</p>\n\n<p>Let us remember when we were oppressed in medieval Spain and Germany. </p>\n\n<p>Let us remember when we were under the thumb of the Russian Tsars.</p>\n\n<p>Let us remember when Nebuchadnezzar and the Romans toppled the Temples in Jerusalem.</p>\n\n<p>Let us remember, also, the scourge of Nazi Germany.</p>\n\n<p>But let us remember that we were liberated from Egypt, that we discovered Poland and Holland, that we came to the golden shores of America.</p>\n\n<p>And, last but certainly not least, that we rediscovered Eretz Israel, and made a home there, and clashed with Egypt, and made peace with that country. In a sense, then, Jews have come full circle!</p>\n\n<p>Yet, even today, there are people who are not free. People oppressed under evil laws. People in countries where they are not allowed to convert to other religions. Some of us may have been all four, at different times! Nonetheless, the ancients, much like us moderns, had their advice on how to respond to each type.</p>\n\n<p><strong>The wise and curious child asks, “Why do we celebrate Passover? How do we celebrate Passover? Why do it in that way? How can we improve Passover?”</strong></p>\n\n<p>Advice: Teach this child the rules and customs of observing Passover, and explain the traditions and history that underlay those customs. This includes the ancient and discarded tradition of ending all entertainment and eating with the Afikomen. (The current custom in our family is to hold a search for the Afikomen and pay whomever finds it a ransom; this is a reminder of the old custom.) Point out some ideas for improving the Seder, if you feel like it.</p>\n\n<p><strong>The rebellious child asks, “What does this service mean to you? Why should I join in?”</strong></p>\n\n<p>The child excludes himself or herself when he or she says, “to you”! He or she obviously misses the point, so explain, “It is because of what God did for ME when God took ME out of Egypt”. “Me”, not “us”, because such a child would not have been worthy of liberation. He or she fails to realize that freedom brings responsibility.</p>\n\n<p><strong>The simple child, bewildered, asks, “What is all this?”</strong></p>\n\n<p>The simple child desires a simple answer. Tell him or her, “With a strong and outstretched hand, God freed us from Egypt, where we were slaves. This is what we’re celebrating.”</p>\n\n<p><strong>Then there’s the child who can’t think of anything to ask.</strong></p>\n\n<p>This child needs an icebreaker. Had God not brought our ancestors out of Egypt, then even today we and our children and our grandchildren might still be slaves to somebody, even if not a Pharaoh in Egypt. The same is true of Russia, and the Tsars.
