The seder begins with Kiddush, the blessing over a cup of wine. Wine stands for the sweetness and joy of a holiday celebration. God promised our people four times. We drink a cup of wine for each promise.
With the first cup of wine we recall the first promise: "I will free you from the slavery of Egypt."
