Joseph, an advisor to Pharoah, settled his family in the land of Goshen, apart from the Egyptians.</p>\n\n<p>Joseph’s contribution to Egyptian society was forgotten after his death, and the new Pharaoh, feeling threatened by the success of the Israelites, enslaved them with cruel and bitter labor.</p>\n\n<p>Alerted to a prophecy that the Israelites would be led to freedom by a boy yet to be born, Pharaoh ordered all newborn Jewish boys cast into the Nile. Yocheved set her newborn son (Moses) adrift in the Nile in a basket, where he was found by Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him.</p>\n\n<p>Years later, Moses came upon an Egyptian beating an Israelite. Outraged, Moses slew the Egyptian, but then fled Egypt for fear that his action would be discovered. Moses took refuge in Midian with Jethro and married Jethro's daughter, Tziporah. While shepherding Jethro’s sheep, Moses came upon a burning bush which was not consumed, from which God instructed him to go back and lead the Israelites out of Egypt.</p>\n\n<p>Moses, joined by his older brother Aaron, went to Pharaoh and demanded the release of the Israelites. Pharaoh repeatedly said no--nine times. Each time he said no, another plague struck Egypt. Finally, God struck dead all the Egyptian first born. After this final tenth plague, Pharaoh finally said “yes” and the Jews left Egypt quickly, matzah in hand.</p>\n\n<p>Pharaoh changed his mind and chased the Israelites, who were eventually trapped between the Egyptian army and the Red Sea. But the Sea miraculously split and they crossed safely while the Egyptians drowned in the returning waters. The salt water also reminds us of the many children, women, and men who are still slaves right now, today. They cry enough tears in one day to fill this bowl to overflowing. We must hide the <em>Afikomen </em> --a piece of matzah that will be the very last thing we eat at the end of our Seder meal.</p>\n\n<p>On our table we have three pieces of matzah. We will take the middle piece and break it in half. One half will stay with the other two pieces. The other half will become our <em>Afikomen </em> which we will hide during the Seder.</p>\n\n<p>This matzah is the bread of affliction--the bread of poverty and sorrow--that our ancestors ate when they were slaves in the land of Egypt.</p>\n\n<p>What is matzah? Special bread made without leaven or yeast so it cannot rise. Why do we eat matzah on Passover? Because matzah reminds us that we had to escape from Egypt so quickly that there was no time for bread to rise. It also reminds us of the poor food we ate when we were salves. Breaking the matzah into pieces reminds us that when we were hungry, we had very little to eat. When we were slaves, we never had enough food to save for later.</p>\n\n<p>Leader:</p>\n\n<p>Someone please open our door as we say these words together:</p>\n\n<p> <em>Let anyone who is hungry come and eat. Think back to the story we are telling tonight and remember: There would have been no Exodus, no Passover, no Seder, no freedom without the many brave women who played crucial roles in the Passover drama.</p>\n\n<p>There would have been no Exodus without Yocheved, who hid her baby Moses, then wove him a little basket so he could float safely down the Nile; without Pharaoh's daughter, Thermutis, who defied her father, the king of all Egypt, when she rescued an Israelite child and drew Moses from the water.</p>\n\n<p>And, last but not least, the Exodus never could have happened without the sister of Moses, Miriam the prophet--who watched over Moses, who brought her mother to Pharaoh's daughter, who led the singing and celebration after our safe crossing through the Red Sea. We take some matzah and smear some maror on end and some charoset on the other. We then top off the sandwich with another piece of matzah.</p>\n\n<p>When we eat, we begin with the bitter side and move to the sweet side, reminding us that though our slavery was indeed bitter, our redemption is sweeter still…The step of Korech was developed to accommodate an argument among the sages. Hillel thought that the matzah and maror (and lamb) should be eaten <em>together</em>. Other sages though they should be eaten <em>separately</em>.
