The Torah says “God brought us out from there in order to lead us to and give us the land promised to our ancestors.”May we continue to reach future holidays in peace, joy, love, and contentment.</p>\n\n<p><strong>בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן</strong></p>\n\n<p>Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree hagafen.</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, who creates the fruit of the vine.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Drink the second glass of wine!</em> </p>\n\n<p><u><strong>AN ORANGE ON THE SEDER PLATE?</strong></u></p>\n\n<p>On all other Passovers, we review all items on the Seder plate....on this Passover, let's discuss the orange.</p>\n\n<p>In the early 1980s, while speaking at Oberlin College Hillel, Susannah Heschel, a well-known Jewish feminist scholar and daughter of Abraham Joshua Heschel, was introduced to an early feminist Haggadah that suggested adding a crust of bread on the seder plate, as a sign of solidarity with Jewish lesbians (which was intended to convey the idea that there's as much room for a lesbian in Judaism as there is for a crust of bread on the seder plate).</p>\n\n<p>Heschel felt that to put bread on the seder plate would be to accept that Jewish lesbians and gay men violate Judaism like  <em>hametz </em> [leavened food] violates Passover.</p>\n\n<p>So at her next seder, she chose an orange as a symbol of inclusion of gays and lesbians and others who are marginalized within the Jewish community. They are a very festive people. –Elaine Benes</em> </p>\n\n<p><u><strong>AN INTRODUCTION</strong></u></p>\n\n<p>About three thousand years ago, ancient Israelites fused a shepherds’ spring celebration of the birthing of lambs and a farmers’ spring celebration of the sprouting of barley into a spring celebration of their liberation from slavery and the downfall of a tyrant.</p>\n\n<p>About two thousand years ago, the Jewish people reshaped that celebration into a Seder, a story and meal that could be eaten and told at home. The Passover story and celebration entered the memory stream of Christianity through the teachings of Jesus in the Last Supper, which seems to have been a Passover Seder. Still later, Islam welcomed Moses as a prophet.</p>\n\n<p>In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was planning to take part in a Passover Seder with the family of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who marched and prayed and struggled alongside him against racism an militarism in America. But ten days before the Seder, Dr. King was murdered.</p>\n\n<p>“Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and to ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism, falsehoods. The liturgical movement must become a revolutionary movement, seeking to overthrow the forces that continue to destroy the promise, the hope, the vision.” -Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, 1970</p>\n\n<p>Passover allows us a chance to connect with each other and with ourselves, and to help us remember all the ways we enslave ourselves when we lapse into automatic, familiar thought patterns.</p>\n\n<p>We enslave ourselves when we remain in  <em>Mitzrayim, </em> the narrow place of confusion and disconnection with our own and others' essential nature. As human beings we all want to be happy and avoid suffering. In the Jewish tradition, ritual is used to bring us to an awareness of the present, and to connect us with our past. In a time when income disparity is growing, when hundreds of millions of people live in abject poverty, some find Jews to be a convenient scapegoat rather than looking at the real source of their problems.</p>\n\n<p>A second root cause of anti-Semitism derives from an irrational and misplaced hatred of Israel. Far too many people see Israel as an apartheid state and blame the people of an entire religion for what, in truth, are internal national-policy decisions. Does anyone really believe that the innocent victims in that kosher shop in Paris and at that bar mitzvah in Denmark had anything to do with Israeli-Palestinian policies or the building of settlements 2,000 miles away?</p>\n\n<p>The third reason is simple demographics. Europe is now home to 25 million to 30 million Muslims, twice the world's entire Jewish population. Within any religious community that large, there will always be an extremist fringe, people who are radicalized and driven with hatred, while rejecting what all religions need to preach — respect, tolerance and love. We're now seeing the amplified effects of that small, radicalized element. With the Internet, its virus of hatred can now speed from nation to nation, helping fuel Europe's new epidemic of anti-Semitism...</p>\n\n<p>French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has made it clear that anti-Semitism violates the morals and spirit of France and that violent anti-Semitic acts are a crime against all French people that must be confronted, combated and stopped. He challenged his nation to tell the world: Without its Jews, France would no longer be France...Pope Francis has used his powerful voice to make his position and that of the Catholic Church clear, saying: “It's a contradiction that a Christian is anti-Semitic. His roots are Jewish. Matzah is spelled <em>mem-tzaddi-hei</em>, while chametz is spelled <em>chet-mem-tzaddi</em>. The two letters which are different, <em>hei</em> and <em>chet</em> , are actually very similar in appearance; the only difference is that the left leg of the <em>chet</em> rises all the way to the top, while the <em>hei</em> ’s leg remains low.Lowly matzah represents humility.</p>\n\n<p>We sometimes need a reminder to remain humble. Whether it’s in our family life, social circles, or even at work, allowing our egos to get the better of us is never a good thing. A healthy self-esteem is one that occasionally gets out of the way.</p>\n\n<p>So this year, when you eat your matzah at the Seder, take a moment to reflect on its meaning, and how its humble message can be applied to your own life. The Passover story and celebration entered the memory stream of Christianity through the teachings of Jesus in the Last Supper, which seems to have been a Passover Seder. Still later, Islam welcomed Moses as a prophet.</p>\n\n<p>In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was planning to take part in a Passover Seder with the family of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who marched and prayed and struggled alongside him against racism an militarism in America. But ten days before the Seder, Dr. King was murdered.</p>\n\n<p>“Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and to ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism, falsehoods. The liturgical movement must become a revolutionary movement, seeking to overthrow the forces that continue to destroy the promise, the hope, the vision.”  - Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, 1970</p>\n\n<p>Passover allows us a chance to connect with each other and with ourselves, and to help us remember all the ways we enslave ourselves when we lapse into automatic, familiar thought patterns.</p>\n\n<p>We enslave ourselves when we remain in <em>Mitzrayim,</em> the narrow place of confusion and disconnection with our own and others' essential nature. As human beings we all want to be happy and avoid suffering. The stories we tell our children shape what they believe to be possible—which is why at Passover, we must tell the stories of the women who played a crucial role in the Exodus narrative.</p>\n\n<p>The Book of Exodus, much like the Book of Genesis, opens in pervasive darkness. Genesis describes the earth as “unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep.”1 In Exodus, darkness attends the accession of a new Pharaoh who feared the Israelites and so enslaved them. God alone lights the way out of the darkness in Genesis. But in Exodus, God has many partners, first among them, five brave women.</p>\n\n<p>There is Yocheved, Moses’ mother, and Shifra and Puah, the famous midwives. Each defies Pharaoh’s decree to kill the Israelite baby boys. And there is Miriam, Moses’ sister, about whom the following midrash is taught:</p>\n\n<p>[When Miriam’s only brother was Aaron] she prophesied… “my mother is destined to bear a son who will save Israel.” When [Moses] was born the whole house… filled with light[.] [Miriam’s] father arose and kissed her on the head, saying, “My daughter, your prophecy has been fulfilled.” But when they threw [Moses] into the river her father tapped her on the head saying, “Daughter, where is your prophecy?”</p>\n\n<p>So it is written, “And [Miriam] stood afar off to know what would be[come of] the latter part of her prophecy.”</p>\n\n<p>Finally, there is Pharaoh’s daughter Batya, who defies her own father and plucks baby Moses out of the Nile. The Midrash reminds us that Batya knew exactly what she doing:</p>\n\n<p>When Pharaoh’s daughter’s handmaidens saw that she intended to rescue Moses, they attempted to dissuade her, and persuade her to heed her father. They said to her: “Our mistress, it is the way of the world that when a king issues a decree, it is not heeded by the entire world, but his children and the members of his household do observe it, and you wish to transgress your father’s decree?”</p>\n\n<p>But transgress she did. These women had a vision leading out of the darkness shrouding their world. They were women of action, prepared to defy authority to make their vision a reality bathed in the light of the day.</p>\n\n<p>Retelling the heroic stories of Yocheved, Shifra, Puah, Miriam and Batya reminds our daughters that with vision and the courage to act, they can carry forward the tradition those intrepid women launched.</p>\n\n<p>While there is much light in today’s world, there remains in our universe disheartening darkness, inhumanity spawned by ignorance and hate. We see horrific examples in the Middle East, parts of Africa, and Ukraine. The Passover story recalls to all of us—women and men—that with vision and action we can join hands with others of like mind, kindling lights along paths leading out of the terrifying darkness.</p>\n\n<p><u>GO DOWN MOSES BY JUBILEE SINGERS, 1872</u></p>\n\n<p> <em>When Israel was in Egypt's land: Let my people go,</em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>Oppress'd so hard they could not stand, Let my People go.</em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>Go down, Moses,</em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>Way down in Egypt's land,</em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>Tell old Pharaoh,</em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>Let my people go.</em> </p>\n\n<p> <em>At our seder, we had whole wheat and bran matzoh, fortified with Metamucil. In the ear...", "user_image": "", "user_image_original": "", "body": "<p>On all other Passovers, we review all items on the Seder plate....on this Passover, let's discuss the orange.</p>\n\n<p>In the early 1980s, while speaking at Oberlin College Hillel, Susannah Heschel, a well-known Jewish feminist scholar, was introduced to an early feminist Haggadah that suggested adding a crust of bread on the seder plate, as a sign of solidarity with Jewish lesbians (which was intended to convey the idea that there's as much room for a lesbian in Judaism as there is for a crust of bread on the seder plate).</p>\n\n<p>Heschel felt that to put bread on the seder plate would be to accept that Jewish lesbians and gay men violate Judaism like  <em>hametz</em>  [leavened food] violates Passover.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>So at her next seder, she chose an orange as a symbol of inclusion of gays and lesbians and others who are marginalized within the Jewish community. She offered the orange as a symbol of the fruitfulness for all Jews when lesbians and gay men are contributing and active members of Jewish life.</p>\n\n<p>She writes, \"Somehow, though, the typical patriarchal maneuver occurred: My idea of an orange and my intention of affirming lesbians and gay men were transformed. Now the story circulates that a man said to me that a woman belongs on the  <em>bimah</em>  as an orange on the seder plate. A woman's words are attributed to a man, and the affirmation of lesbians and gay men is erased. But don’t forget when you’re done we’ve got a little more seder to go, including the final two cups of wine!</p>\n\n\n\n<p><u><strong>FINDING AND EATING THE AFIKOMEN | <em>TZAFOON</em> | צָפוּן</strong></u></p>\n\n<p>Tzafun, which literally means “hidden,” is the part of the seder where we seek what is not obvious, when we look for something other than what is in front of our faces. It is also when we return to that which was broken earlier in the evening and try to make whole again. In this way, Tzafun serves as the organizing principle of the second half of our seder, where we ask ourselves what world we want to see. Then we commit ourselves to making it real.</p>\n\n<p> <em>Refill everyone’s wine glass.</em> </p>\n\n\n\n<p><u>GRACE AFTER THE MEAL</u></p>\n\n<p>On Passover, this becomes something like an extended toast to God, culminating with drinking our third glass of wine for the evening:</p>\n\n<p>We praise God, whose goodness sustains the world.As it says in the Torah: When you have eaten and are satisfied, give praise to your God who has given you this good earth. We praise God for the earth and for its sustenance. May the source of peace grant peace to us, to the Jewish people, and to the entire world. When confronting this history, how do we answer our children when they ask us how to pursue justice in our time?</p>\n\n<p>WHAT DOES THE ACTIVIST CHILD ASK?</p>\n\n<p>“The Torah tells me, ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue,’ but how can I pursue justice?”Empower him always to seek pathways to advocate for the vulnerable. As Proverbs teaches, “Speak up for the mute, for the rights of the unfortunate. Speak up, judge righteously, champion the poor and the needy.”</p>\n\n<p>WHAT DOES THE SKEPTICAL CHILD ASK?</p>\n\n<p>“How can I solve problems of such enormity?” Encourage her by explaining that she need not solve the problems, she must only do what she is capable of doing. The tradition that the youngest person asks the questions reflects the centrality of involving everyone in the seder. The rabbis who created the set format for the seder gave us the Four Questions to help break the ice in case no one had their own questions. Asking questions is a core tradition in Jewish life. If everyone at your seder is around the same age, perhaps the person with the least seder experience can ask them – or everyone can sing them all together.</p>\n\n<p><strong>מַה נִּשְׁתַּנָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה מִכָּל הַלֵּילות</strong></p>\n\n<p>Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol haleilot?</p>\n\n<p>Why is this night different from all other nights?</p>\n\n<p><strong>שֶׁבְּכָל הַלֵּילוֹת אָֽנוּ אוֹכלין חָמֵץ וּמַצָּה הַלַּֽיְלָה הַזֶּה כֻּלּוֹ מצה</strong></p>\n\n<p>Shebichol haleilot anu ochlin chameitz u-matzah.
