We will wash our hands twice during our seder: now, with no blessing, to get us ready for the rituals to come; and then again later, we’ll wash again with a blessing, preparing us for the meal, which Judaism thinks of as a ritual in itself.
\n\n
To wash your hands, you don’t need soap, but you do need a cup to pour water over your hands. Pour water on each of your hands three times, alternating between your hands. We'll pass a pitcher and a bowl around so everyone can wash at their seats…
\n",

As we remember the liberation from Egypt, we also recognize the stirrings of spring and rebirth happening in the world around us. The symbols on our table bring together elements of both kinds of celebration.
\n\n
We now take a vegetable, representing our joy at the dawning of spring after our long, cold winter. Most families use a green vegetable, such as parsley or celery, but some families from Eastern Europe have a tradition of using a boiled potato since greens were hard to come by at Passover time. Whatever symbol of spring and sustenance we’re using, we now dip it into salt water, a symbol of the tears our ancestors shed as slaves. Before we eat it, we recite a short blessing:
\n\n
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה
\n\n
Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, borei p’ree ha-adama.
\n\n
We praise God, Ruler of Everything, who creates the fruits of the earth.
\n\n
We look forward to spring and the reawakening of flowers and greenery. They haven’t been lost, just buried beneath the snow, getting ready for reappearance just when we most needed them.
\n",

The Bible instructs: “ You shall tell your child on that day, saying: ‘This is because of what Adonai did for me when I came out of Egypt.' ” (Exodus 13:8)
\n\n
Elie Weisel writes: God created man because He loves stories. We each have a story to tell — a story of enslavement, struggle, liberation. We can think about the things that still might enslave us today: the pursuit of material over spiritual wealth, anger, judgment, etc. We can also think about those around the world today who are still hungry and are not free to live peaceful lives. We can do our part to relieve the suffering of our fellow human beings.
\n\n\n\n
Ha lachma anya d’achaloo avhatana b’ara d’meetzrayeem. We now break the middle matzah into two pieces. The host should wrap up the larger of the pieces and, at some point between now and the end of dinner, hide it. This piece is called the afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek. After dinner, the guests will have to hunt for the afikomen in order to wrap up the meal… and win a prize.
\n\n
We eat matzah in memory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. As slaves, they had faced many false starts before finally being let go. So when the word of their freedom came, they took whatever dough they had and ran with it before it had the chance to rise, leaving it looking something like matzah.
\n\n
Uncover and hold up the three pieces of matzah and say:
\n\n
This is the bread of poverty which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. All who are hungry, come and eat; all who are needy, come and celebrate Passover with us. This year we are here; next year we will be in Israel. This year we are slaves; next year we will be free.
\n\n
These days, matzah is a special food and we look forward to eating it on Passover. But, we can imagine eating only matzah, or we can imagine being one of the countless people around the world who don’t have enough to eat.....
\n\n\n",

We regret that our freedom came at the cost of the Egyptians’ suffering, for we are all human beings made in the image of God. We pour out a drop of wine for each of the plagues as we recite them.
\n\n
Dip a finger or a spoon into your wine glass for a drop for each plague.
\n\n
These are the ten plagues which God brought down on the Egyptians:
\n\n
Blood | dam | דָּם
\n\n
Frogs | tzfardeiya | צְפַרְדֵּֽעַ
\n\n
Lice | kinim | כִּנִּים
\n\n
Beasts | arov | עָרוֹב
\n\n
Cattle disease | dever | דֶּֽבֶר
\n\n
Boils | sh’chin | שְׁחִין
\n\n
Hail | barad | בָּרָד
\n\n
Locusts | arbeh | אַרְבֶּה
\n\n
Darkness | choshech | חֹֽשֶׁךְ
\n\n
Death of the Firstborn | makat b’chorot | מַכַּת בְּכוֹרוֹת
\n\n
The Egyptians needed ten plagues because after each one they were able to come up with excuses and explanations rather than change their behavior.....
\n\n
Maybe there are times when we know that something in our lives has to change individually or as a society (for example, global warming) but we resist the change. Sometimes the consequences get worse and worse because we are reluctant to change.... We have to remember we are free; we can choose not to make excuses and explanations and instead we can take positive action....
\n",

Miriam's Cup is filled with water, rather than wine, to symbolize the well that was said to have followed Miriam throughout the desert and served as the main source of water during the Jews' 40 years of wandering.
\n\n
Miriam's Cup is also a way of drawing attention to the importance of the other women of the Exodus story who have sometimes been overlooked but about whom our tradition says, \"If it wasn't for the righteousness of women of that generation we would not have been redeemed from Egypt\" (Babylonian Talmud, Sotah 9b). In Exodus, God has many partners, including five brave women. There is Yocheved, Moses’ mother, who chooses to let her son, Moses, live; and Shifra and Puah, the Hebrew midwives who defy the Pharaoh's order to kill the first born sons of the Jews. Then there is Miriam, Moses’ sister, who ensures her brother's survival. Finally, there is Pharaoh’s daughter Batya, who defies her own father and plucks baby Moses out of the Nile. We place Miriam’s Cup on our Seder table to honor the important role of Jewish women in our tradition and history.
\n",
