The Bitter Herbs
(Leader holds up karpas for all to see)
Leader: The green herbs are a symbol of spring and new life. But tonight, we dip these herbs in salt water. The bitterness reminds us of the bitterness of slavery, and the salt reminds us of the tears our ancestors shed while slaves in Egypt. We are reminded that out of struggle came new life, and out of tears came redemption, just as winter gives way to spring.
(Leader dips greens in salt water and the following blessing is said.)
ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, You create the fruits of the earth.
(All dip the greens in salt water and eat them.)
