There was no time to let the yeast<br />\nrise in the dough before they baked it.<br />\nWhy do we eat bitter herbs? It is to remind us how bitter it was to live as slaves in<br />\nEgypt.<br />\nWhy do we dip the herbs twice? We dip the karpas in salt water to remind us that there<br />\nis hope for new life even when there are tears. It remind us that our ancestors were able to withstand bitter slavery because<br />\nthey never lost the sweet hope of freedom.<br />\nWhy do we eat reclining? Because free men, and not slaves, recline at table. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.</p>\n\n<p>“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.\"</p>\n\n<p> <em>(from Exodus 12).</em> </p>\n\n<p>Because the Egyptians did not sacrifice the lamb and did not place the blood on the doorways, their firstborn are killed. After this, Pharaoh finally relents and literally begs the Jews to leave. But just as the Jews reach the Red Sea, they find Pharaoh has changed his mind and is coming after them. God split the Red Sea and allowed them to cross, but closes it over the Egyptians. The zeroa, the shank bone, represents the Paschal sacrifice. The egg represents the sacrifices made at the Temple. The egg is also traditionally a food eaten by mourners, and at Passover it represents mourning over the loss of the Temple.
